New Tomb Raider film coming? News

News by Ellie Gibson

29 November, 2005

Following on from the huge box office success of the first two Tomb Raider films - despite the fact that they were a bit rubbish - rumour has it that Lara may get a third outing on the big screen.

That's according to The Business Online, which quotes 'Hollywood sources' as saying negotiations between Paramount Pictures and SCI have already begun.

Word is that Angelina Jolie, star of the first films, has "expressed an interest" in stepping into Lara's shorts once again - and there's even a rumour that Brad Pitt will have a small role in the movie, though we suspect that's just our old friend Internet Reports getting up to mischief again.

That said, there has been chatter about a third Tomb Raider film in the past. Early last year, film producer Lloyd Levin told US Official PlayStation Magazine that international returns on the first two films would more than justify a third. At the same time, Chris Barrie (he of Rimmer from Red Dwarf fame), who played Lara Croft's butler in the films, said a third was "on the slate" in an interview with trash-peddling red-top The Sun.

It's thought that Paramount paid Eidos, in the days before the SCI buyout, a one-off licensing fee for Tomb Raider when the first film was produced in 1998. Eidos also got a percentage of merchandise sales and box office takings

An Eidos spokesperson declined to comment on reports about a third film, telling Eurogamer: "We do not comment on rumours." But seeing as the first two movies grossed more than $450 million, and there's a new Tomb Raider game due out next year, it doesn't seem too unlikely that Lara will be returning to cinemas.

Thing is, Tomb Raider does have the ingredients to be a good movie. Action adventure mix between James Bond and Indiana Jones. If they just get a decent script going you can have a cool movie.

I hope they finally make a decent one, if only for the amount of effort Jolie puts into the character.

Tomb Raider 2 was not exactly a huge box office success. It barely broke even.

Why do I think I'm the only person who thought both Tomb Raider films were OK?

Good Lord! I couldn't believe they made the second film, and now this is in the offing? Surely this time they must realise that the only reason anyone will watch it is if there's copious bappage on show.

Aye, TR2 made a tidy profit at the box office - and those figures don't include the full set of international returns, DVD revenues, etc... It was a very commercially successful film.

As much as the movies were panned, they did actually make money so I can understand why they would consider creating a third.

Not really.. I've allways found her to be a bit unattractive, odd looking and she has no charisma - yes I know I'm alone with this opinion :)

Anyway, the movies sucked big time - we surely should be able to agree on that one :)

Crossing fingers for the new Tomb Raider game ...

@Beano: Bro, you are not alone. I don't know, its a bit weird - she is technically beautiful, but comes accross to me as ... cold and calculating. Somehow I am unable to separate the persona from the looks, the idiot that I am.

As for the films, I cannot really complain as she and Brad Pitt are doing some amazing welfare work for my country, so - I WILL BUY TEN COPIES OF TR 3.

I heard she's just a bit of a lunatic. And moving on from superstud Billy Bob Thornton to that minger Brad Pitt would seem to confirm it.

No, hang on.

I really like both films, my only major problem with the second was that Daniel Craigs character was no where to be seen with no explanation at all, which meant they created some new character with a history with Lara. It was an interesting history sure, but all the same, Id have preferred Craig back.

I will definetly see this is it gets made.

The most important question is ofcourse: will she beat up another shark?

That really had me in stitches during the second one. Do you notice a shark attacking you? Well, why not give it a slap on it's head, problem solved.

Give me Reese Witherspoon with no make up any day of the week. Screw Jolie.

EDIT: Ok I meant to say she is overrated in her beauty. She's fine - she does UN mission stuff and all.

A third Tomb Raider film? If that's true I definitely can't wait for it. Personally if all people want to see is a female naked in the tomb raider movies then they may as well just watch an adult movie. If you want to see a regualr movie based off of tomb raider then watch it. For other reasons than that is just crazy. At first I didn't really like Angelina Jolie as an actress, however she really suprised me in the two different tomb raider movies. So if another tomb raider flick is coming out, well hey I'm definitely up for seeing it!

Being a true Tomb Raider fan, I found the movies to be alot like the game, so if you don't play the game I can see how it may seem a bit out there. I do like the fact that they incorporated the feel of the game in the movie. But, for me, watching a movie is pure entertainment. I relish the thought of a new movie!
