Katamari Damacy sequel in development

Namco reportedly confirms that the rolling star's about to get a little less lonely.

Namco is working on a sequel to innovative, um, "roll-'em-up" Katamari Damacy and plans to release it in Japan on the PlayStation 2 during its 2005 financial year, according to a report on IGN.

Katamari Damacy 2 was apparently listed amongst Namco's plans for FY 2005 in an investor report hosted on Namco's "WonderPage" official website, and unlike a number of games it wasn't listed as "tentative", suggesting that Namco has made up its mind about a sequel.

Which is not that surprising when you consider the weight of the positive response to the Japanese version and the US conversion released recently. For more details we suggest you catch up on our review of the Japanese version here, and we'll be sure to let you know if and when we hear details of a European launch for either the original or the sequel.

Yes, bloody give us the first one. I'll buy two copies if you like.

In further news, Namco today confirmed that they still 'hate those bloody smelly Europeans' and wished they'd 'sod off and die'.

And then the games companies complain about people modding their consoles....

    Matt Sephton: Namco hates Europe.
I've emailed them a few times asking for possible releases over here for (f.x.) Xenosaga and one of the Tales of-games. But no, they don't think the "european" market is "suited" for "japanese" games.
    Allrighty.

Mental Rabbit: Hopefully, they'll license the game to some other publisher, who'll end up making a small fortune. Maybe.

what they really mean is they can't be arsed with localising it for the non-english speaking countries.

whilst english speakers are pretty thick on the ground the expense of getting competent individuals to do translation work must be pretty high.

so any multilingual individuals wanting to get into the gaming business could be in with a job.

why don't they release stuff in europe that's english only rather than not releasing at all? i'm sure many of those for whom english isn't their native language would still appreciate them.

Either Namco hates Europe, or this is intercontinental karmic revenge for not releasing Vib or Mojib Ribbon in the US.

Alright, going on the assumption that you're not just a wind-up... can you please tell me how the hell you can justify releasing Xenosaga part 2 but not part 1? I mean... we missed a part! That's like starting to watch a TV show half way through the series.

Xenosaga was one of my most-anticipated games this generation, and I've not been allowed to play it. Now you tell me I might get part 2. Ordinarily I would be happy, but given the fact that I don't have part 1 I might have to think twice about buying it.

Localisation costs I can understand. Why not just release it in English? Surely it's better to have one language than not get it at all?

I wouldnt mind if consoles where region free but... meh. I will mod and download if you dont want to sell it to me then :(

Yes; I played Xenogears, now I want Xenosaga 1 not 2 (unless 2 is totally unrelated then play away). I dont see how there can be too many tech difficulties if a mod chip and allow play on our pal boxes. And alot of Europe understand English, unlike us they learn foreign languages in primary school.

Sorry but I refuse to believe that bollocks about "technical problems" leading to Katamari 1 not being released...

    Nice try though.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but they don't even have to localise KD1 as it's already out in the US - presumably in irritating, badly accented and poorly grammatical English, but hey - we'll live with that.

IIRC, it only needs a PAL conversion then. There's enough developer types hanging around here to get an answer: is there *ever* a real technical issue preventing PAL conversion at a reasonable cost, or is it just a crappy excuse when they don't think it'll sell or CBFed?

I can understand the large costs of converting language in text, FMV and samples, but TV type? Is it really that much of a big deal?

Actually -- the news here was Katamari Damacy 2 for Japan AND Europe. I guess no one is interested in finding out that part though. It's much more fun slagging off Namco than getting the words out in the correct order.
