Smash Bros. Brawl trailer

The one from Nintendo World.

What's that? You weren't at Nintendo World? Haha! No wonder your parents hate you! Oh well, despite this you can still have a look at the trailer Nintendo produced to show off Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii.

Just scoot over to Eurogamer TV and there it is, looking mighty handsome with Kirby and Pikachu and Pit leaping around with Link and some of the others. You know, Wario etc. We can't be bothered to list them all.

Although we will mention Zero Suit Samus and Solid Snake, as they've just crept onto our screen behind this document window. Or in Snake's case crawled and then rocket-launched onto the screen.

The full game, as you'll remember from its unveiling at E3, is expected to rely more on traditional controls than the Wii's revolutionary motion sensing stuff, but don't let that discourage you: Smash Bros. was one of the best games the Cube ever had, and Brawl is being made by the right people. Expect to see it in 2007.

Yes, that's right. Smash Bros. was brilliant (...in multiplayer...), and had a surprising amount of depth, despite being ostensibly simple. Although Fox was a bit cheap.
  • Blerk #2 5 years ago

Smash Bros. was one of the best games the Cube ever had

    Pfft. Sez you!
  • rodpad #3 5 years ago

Smash Bros. has always been a big pile of steaming turds.
  • Steroyd #4 5 years ago

Blerk he said one of the best which is true.

Infact only Metroid Prime, and Smah Brothers (along with mario Party 4) are all i ever played on the damn thing.

    ...and Zelda TP.
  • IAmBatman #5 5 years ago

So is Wario's thing meant to be that he's incredibly badly animated?
  • Steroyd #6 5 years ago

I assume he's going to play just like Mr game and Watch, it's done on purpose.
  • pretence #7 5 years ago

could never get into Smash, just found it silly....
  • Pooley #8 5 years ago

Hey, c'mon SSBM was one of the most fun multiplayer games on the Cube!

I always used Roy, usually against my mates who played Pikachu, Link and Mario.

Surprising how many hours we played this for. And the achievements you got at the end of each bout, Cheap Shot, Coward, Object Hoarder, etc., etc., always had us in fits of laughter.

Single player quickly got boring and was only played to unlock characters, stages and trophies. I think I ended up with about every trophy though.

Nintendo must've made a fortune off this game purely on extra controller sales!
  • Steroyd #9 5 years ago

Yeah and to think if Nintendo get online play on this... it could even be a Halo Killer.

...that was a joke by the way.
  • Cappy #10 5 years ago

Smash Brothers is utter rubbish in single player though, rendering the game absolutely worthless most of the time. Thats bad game design.
  • Blerk #11 5 years ago

Blerk he said one of the best which is true.

Did you just disrespect almost the entire Cube library? :-D
  • pretence #12 5 years ago

pfft..... multi player.... maybe with four it was more random and chaotic but with two it was just a bit...."is this it" kind of feeling....

    and what Cappy says....:)

    Well, I loved the game...
And should it be online (which I unfortunately doubt) it might just be better than Halo you know?
    Lots of players...
  • Pooley #14 5 years ago

I don't think they'll be able to do online matches with Brawl. Any kind of lag would make this game unplayable. It's just too fast and furious to cope with this.

Two player SSBM was okay, but three or four was where the real fun was at. Two was fun though if you used two CPU opponents with their level maxed out.
  • Frumper #15 5 years ago

Another vote here for SSBM being a fantastic game on the Cube. Initially there was the WTF is going on factor, "it's a button masher".

After putting some time into it though you learn there's a lot more nuance to pull off the better moves.

Single play Target challenges, survival etc... all added more to it but the gold was in multiplayer.

I have to say though, that trailer leaves me underwhelmed, it looks mostly the same as the Cube version except for the new characters and levels. Then again, that's what the games about and they haven't changed the formula. I hope the challenges etc... are upto previous standard. :o)
  • SolBadguyZero #16 5 years ago

When I think Wii I can only think about the new Smash Bros. Of course I love Zelda (got me a pre-order for a Wii and a Zelda just yesterday), but without a doubt the best reason for me to own a Wii is Brawl, I still play Melee almost every day with a friend of mine, we've played it for more than a year in a row (although I've had the game since launch, I've never had any friends that knew how to play Melee as good as me).

I couldn't care less about single player, since the computer AI is too stupid and predictable. Bring on the new Smash Bros Nintendo!! If this one manages to be at least as good as the last, we're gonna have one hell of a good time!!

Did you just disrespect almost the entire Cube library? :-D

Yes i did respect the Cube Library, including Mario Sunshie, Star Fox Adventures, Kongo bongo, Luigi's mansion, Pokemon colliseum.

I havn't played Pikman and i've been meaning to get Warioland when it gets sold for £20.

Still waiting for that to happen BTW.
  • Darren #18 5 years ago

I've still got Super Smash Bros. Melee for the GameCube; it's a good fun game but my real reason for keeping the game is for the utterly outstanding orchestrated soundtrack of classic Nintendo tunes.
  • ecureuil #19 5 years ago

SSBM is one of the best games ever. It's SO perfectly crafted, there are very few games that can match it.
  • CasperCCC #20 5 years ago

    I'm an idiot.

I was entirely unimpressed by SSB on the Cube. Thought it was a bit rubbish, really. Even in multiplayer. I tried to like it, but it just seemed a bit crap. Couldn't get into it at all.

That's not why I'm an idiot though - that probably just makes me a philistine.

What makes me an idiot is that despite not liking the Cube version, and despite having no friends who might be able to play multiplayer with me, I bet I still buy it if it gets good enough reviews.

Even though I know that I know that I'm an idiot if I do.

    See. I'm an idiot.
  • pretence #21 5 years ago

I guess the same arguement can be thrown at FFCC and Zelda FS.... They are really all about the multi player.... Maybe they should put a warning on the box that this will be crap on your own...
  • Muddtallica #22 5 years ago

SSB is a real love-it-or-hate-it Marmite sandwich of a game. Either the entire thing will zip right over your head and seem random, chaotic and pointless whilst simultaneously rendering you blind, or else it will become a life-consuming religion. Being in the second camp, this still stands as my number one long-term reason for wanting to get a Wii, because I know I will get literally hundreds of hours out of it; it's a game which has so much to do in it, and so many levels of hidden depth. SolBadguyZero, I'm in the exact same boat as you there, mate. I too bought Melee with my Cube, and proceeded to play and play until I attained a level far exceeding anyone I know...fortunately, I since made a friend who can at least challenge me, leading to fairly epic two-player battle royales til 4/5am. :p

Still, I hope they do go for broke with improvements this time like they did last time. The quality of the package provided by Melee was breathtaking, especially compared to the original. I'll buy it regardless, but I'll be disappointed if this one was just the same as the last but with the new levels and characters...I do think we've a lot more to come on this one yet, though. There'll be at least twice, maybe three times as many characters as they've shown so far, I reckon, and Sakurai was talking about having a robust single player this time, which is gravy, given I thought it was decent last time...

All that said, though: if you didn't like the other SSB games, you won't like this one either. I don't need to play it to tell you that. Save your time and money, people.
  • SolBadguyZero #23 5 years ago

Muddtallica, it seems you're exactly like me =D, Smash Bros is one of the most complex fighters out there, and you need to play it for a long time if you want to be any good. In fact the complexity of this game astounds me, me and my friends are still discovering new stuff about the game, like using new tactics of discovering new uses for an item we've never thought of.

And the amazing thing is that we still have the same great fun as when we first started playing, I've never felt this way about any game before. It may look just like a lunatic fanboy, but for me Super Smash Melee is the best game I've ever played in my life, and I've played games since the NES, and I own a Xbox... So don't go calling me a Ninty fanboy =P
  • Pike #24 5 years ago

So, was SSBM really a playable game, and not a wanky fanservice for Nintendo zealots?
  • Pooley #25 5 years ago

There are hidden depths to SSBM. Yes, you can play it like a button masher, but this just doesn't work against anyone who knows how to play the game properly.

I really like the objects, such as the Pokė balls, hammer, shells, etc., as they add that variety, and panic, that makes the game fun to play.

I also play a fair bit of Virtua Fighter. VF is rewarding to play when you're able to chain and memorise moves. VF is good to play, SSBM is just pure fun.

I think it draws from the history of Nintendo, rather than being a sop to Ninty fans. It has great music, because the music is very well done and familiar to fans of various Nintendo series. The characters are also varied so you can pick your favourite, though I normally use Roy and I've never played any Fire Emblem games. The stages have great variety and have additional features that can catch you out, like the vehicles on the F-Zero stages.
  • Muddtallica #26 5 years ago

SolBadguyZero: Jeeze. I'm starting to wonder if you ARE me. Everything you said there is exactly my sentiment too. Hopefully I'll be able to play you at Brawl online in a year or so, we'll see who's the best. :p

Pike: I'm not going to deny that there's a lot of Smash Bros that is just blatant fanservice (the trophy museum), but like Pooley suggest, the game is most impressive when it manages to pull gameplay aspects from Nintendo's back catalogue and incorporate it into the Smash Bros gameplay. The character dynamics are a great example; Mario handles a lot like a Mario game, whilst Mr Game and Watch actually feels like a Game and Watch character, and these have pros and cons, and effects on the fighting style. The items are similar, especially the Donkey Kong Hammer, which feels like they've taken it directly from the NES game and stuck it in this modern fighting game, where it acquires a whole new dynamic (ie, weapon of certain death)...:p
  • Aria #27 5 years ago

"Did you just disrespect almost the entire Cube library"!

    What's that supposed to mean?

I've always been a Nintendo fan and I have never felt as disrespected as I did with "the Cube library". Other than a few games -which were always released a year earlier elsewhere- most Gamecube games were absolute kiddie crap; they could have done a lot more with that console.
  • SolBadguyZero #28 5 years ago

Muddtallica, I look forward to playing some Brawl with you, tell you what, I've just registered an account on that new Wii friend code's website, that way you can see what my friend code is and we can play some online games =)

Just look up for a Sol-Badguy in Portugal, and don't mind that friend code, it's obviously a fake, hopefully I'll update the real one in about 10 days, when the Wii is released over here.

By the way the site is: [link url=http://www.miipages.com/

  • smelly #29 5 years ago

As someone who owns a wii and zelda.. Trust me, new zelda is THE reason to own a wii! It's best game i've played in a long long long time!

As for smash bros being a halo beater.. wouldnt be hard.. as halo sucked balls.
  • Pooley #30 5 years ago

@ smelly - glad to hear it about TP, just over a week to go now.

Also agree with you about Halo, having just played through it for the first time. Why do you have to go all the way back through the levels when you get to the end? Just made the game samey. All been said before I suppose. The last bit in the jeep was fun though, pity it was such a rush so you couldn't enjoy it as much.
  • smelly #31 5 years ago

Gawd.. Here we go. Dont know why i'm bothering replying to a monkey who has probably been told this 1000 times already but still doesnt get it.

No, it started out as a gamecube game. And yes, it doesnt always use the wii's extra power. But it's now a wii game which is being ported down to the cube.

The game works BECAUSE of the controller. Riding a horse while aiming your bow and arrow just WORKS. I'd hate to do it any other way.

Dont know why im bothering with this though.. in one ear out the other.

Back on topic. Zelda is bloody great and the reason to own a wii - easily the best 3d zelda so far - although it DOES have its faults, it's still ace. Best game of the year imho, and best launch title ever easily (and that includes better than mazza 64).

The wii so far has had a brilliant launch line up (compared to the ps3's for example, or indeed what the 360 launced with), but then so did the cube (so i wont hold my breath).

  • Aria #32 5 years ago

I totally agree with Smelly on that.
  • smelly #33 5 years ago

hang on.. i'll pick you up on another comment:

    >Oh unless you like that controller toy thingy.

But arent games machines toys? Are we not just PLAYING games? Games are toys which you play with at the end of the day.

A lot of teenage kids seem to try to make out to themselves they arent playing with toys as they're playing "grown up" games with swearing and gore, etc.

But at the end of the day, gloss it over with swearing, gore, nudity or whatever... it's still just a toy you're playing with.

So yes, the controller is a toy, just like all game controllers are. This one just makes things like mouse style control work well in console gaming for first time.

I dont think i could now go back to aiming a gun/arrow/whatever in first person with a joypad now i'm used to pointing at the screen.
  • SolBadguyZero #34 5 years ago

Yes, it seems that most of the people think that playing a Playstation 3 is the more mature thing to do... It's just another videogame console, just like the Wii, but somehow it's more mature... Because it doesn't have "kiddy games" like Mario Kart and stuff like that...

It reminds me of a group of people that came to play Gamecube at my place sometime ago, one of them fits the description of "mature gamer", so after a few rounds of playing some great 4 player Mario Kart: DD, one of my friends told him "It seems you can't beat me like you told me", the answer was "that's because this is a kids game"...

Orly? If Mario Kart is a kids game why doesn't he have the skill to win a single race? Maybe he thinks that way because the game features more colours than red and black on the screen and there aren't heads popping out every time someone hits each other with a blue-shell...

This "kiddy games" stuff has to stop, it's just plain stupid, I play every kind of games, but I prefer Nintendo ones because they are a lot of fun (and isn't that what games are all about? Fun? It doesn't look like it anymore...), I can't ignore a game just because it has bright colours and it doesn't allow me to blow someone's brains out...

  • smelly #36 5 years ago

    @SolBadguyZero:

Totally agree. One of the reason i like bright cartoon artistic stuff is just for that.. for the art. I love getting to the next level/track/world/whatever to just see how the art style changes, how the artists imaginations change the world, etc etc.

If all games look realistic.. then you're just left with the real world.. and we all know what that looks like.
  • Muddtallica #37 5 years ago

SolBadguyZero: Sounds good to me. :p I probably won't actually be able to get a Wii until next year, but I shall keep this in mind. That's the main reason I'm looking forward to Brawl regardless of anything else; I know I won't be short of worthy opponents this time round. :D

AdamOfEternia: Jeeze, you don't half go on about this "Zelda on the GC is teh REEEL version, the Wii version is a government conspiracy" thing, do you? Except now you're actually trying to use it against someone who actually has the game, and is therefore likely to be more qualified to comment on the relative merits of GC vs Wii controls than you are. Good luck on that.

smelly: Know what you mean about the mature thing at times; I mean, you can argue that the PS3 is more than the toy most consoles are because of all the multimedia features, but in my book if you're playing a game, you're playing with a toy, no matter what the content is. That's not to say that some games aren't more sophisticated and maturely designed than others, but again that doesn't relate to its content. GTA is a very sophistciated, mature game design, but so is Wind Waker, or on the flipside; the Shrek games are facile, juvenile game designs, but so is 50 Cent: Bulletproof...

One thing though: the Cube had a great launch lineup? Did it? I remember Monkey Ball, and the fun-for-five-hours Luigi's Mansion...which is why I didn't get one until SSBM came out. What else was there?
  • dudefella #38 5 years ago

Play Smash Brothers with 3 similarly skilled friends and it is hands down the best party/multiplayer game ever in my book. Brilliant, deceptively deep game.
  • Aria #39 5 years ago

    @SolBadguyZero

If you included me in “most people” , well let me tell you that I didn’t mention any particular games, but I will now: Mario Kart is a great game, Mario Party 3 on the N64 is a great game, LoZ:Windwaker is a great game and they all have cartoonish graphics. That wasn’t my point! My point is the Cube needed more games centred on good, challenging gameplay rather than either yearly updates of Princess Peach and her gang like Mario Party 999 or licensed platform games based on running and collecting things. If you didn’t mean me however, ignore this!
