PlayStation 3 patched again

0.01 percent better!

Sony has patched PlayStation 3 up to version 1.11, which is coincidentally also the number of people in Europe who actually own a PlayStation 3.

The update doesn't appear to do much, besides relocating the online account management button to the "Friends" menu and taking 15 minutes to download (cursed Internets), but we are also told that it sorts out some minor security issues, so WATCH OUT TERRORISTS.

Anyway, for more on what the PS3 can do, be sure to refer to the online manual, which is useful on the basis that it details things like the audio formats it supports, even if it does neglect to mention how rubbish iPod support is and things like that.

Does this also come with RootKit 1.12?

15 minutes for a patch ? how big is it ?
  • Dizzy #5 5 years ago

    > rubbish iPod support is

Sony hates Apple for grabbing their home market from under their noses.

    >15 minutes for a patch ? how big is it ?

It can only fit on a Bluray disk!

Takes me back to 80's gaming when you had to wait 15mins for your game to load from tape!

Now they've found a way to take us back there using the Internet! ;-)
  • DJmizuhara #7 5 years ago

NO...it doesn't take 15 minutes...I took me about 20 seconds to load the patch and it took about 3 minutes installing and updating my PS3. I've no idea where the hell they got minutes from, I guess they're using dail-up.

I wonder if this had anything to do with the news that hackers have managed to play their backup games on the PS3. Seems like it's going to be another PSP arms race.
  • AcidSnake #9 5 years ago

That's actually interesting to know, how much space does the PS3 OS occupy?
    Wasn't the 360's OS about 7 GB?

    Link, please?

"I wonder if this had anything to do with the news that hackers have managed to play their backup games on the PS3. "

Yeah, I heard they've _ripped_ the games (and everything except Resistance fits easily onto a DVD, Resistance would if it wasn't for it's FMV) but as to playing them? That would be hilarious if true.
  • Steroyd #12 5 years ago

No the rumour was that they were able to read the ISO or something like that, Joystiq even made a big deal that Resistance was 17GB's big.

Naw 360 just reserves space for stuff like backward compatibility and system cache if you have a hard drive. The OS isn't on the harddrive and the 360 will run without a drive at all!

PS3 doesn't need a hard drive either. Getting hacked so soon must be a sore point. It took a year for the 360 and then one patch to nuke the modified drives :)

    I love irony

  • SeesThroughAll #14 5 years ago

Joystiq even made a big deal that Resistance was 17GB's big.

They were first claiming that from the 21 or 22Gb used, Resistance had 17Gb filler garbage. It was later on confirmed that the disc only uses something like 500Mb padding per region after all. Still doesn't quite reach 20Gb either. Either way, it could only fit in either a (single layer) Blu-Ray or a double-layer HD-DVD.

Devs are often going to use the space by repeating data to avoid seek times, methinks. Future-proof tech indeed. Meh.

Well, the bright side is that if they keep this patch frequency up, we'll have an almost fully functioning console by the time it's released in Europe.. in November 2007 (my personal guess!).

Just exactly how was it hacked? When running Linux, the hardware access is heavily restricted.

The devs already said that the game was compressed to 16Gb, it's not 22. The person who apparently found the padding said that there was 17Gb of padding. That makes no sense considering the game itself is 16Gb. Unless the padding took up antispace. :p

It was later realised that the padding is in fact, just about 500Mb.

If i'm right has the ps3 had more updates than the 360 already?

The link to news that backed up games are already being played on PS3. May or may not be true but I find it interesting that an update with "security fixes" came soon after.
  • SeesThroughAll #21 5 years ago

LOL, OK, the one thing missing to turn the PS3 into the next Dreamcast... piracy.
  • Yossarian #22 5 years ago

wait, it takes time to 'install' the patch? 360 updates are just flashed in somehow

I guess that might also tie into the suggestion that the PS3 OS hogs a huge chunk of memory, whereas the 360's is a neat little thing by comparison
  • Kilters #23 5 years ago

    "Wasn't the 360's OS about 7 GB?"

360 OS is about 5MB, the 7GB you're referring to is the system partition on the HDD whichreserves the space for saves and game caching.
  • Muddtallica #24 5 years ago

Tom Bramwell says that 1.11 people in Europe own a PS3, then...well, DJmizuhara here is obviously one of them. I guess that makes Tom the 0.11.
  • Xerx3s #25 5 years ago

    Wasn't the 360's OS about 7 GB?

Considering that fact that the Xbox os was +-512 kb and the 360 os isn't on the HDD, I seriously doubt that. Probably something like 10 mb or so.
  • Gurgeh #26 5 years ago

AFAIK the only official change was an Account Management tab so you can add money to your online wallet directly. Or to quote Ars Technica:

"Luckily, the update only took a few minutes to download and install, and then I rebooted, and of course for some reason the system didn't recognize my Sixaxis anymore so I had to reconnect with a USB cable—clearly THAT problem hasn't been fixed. Then I looked around to see what wonders were in store for me. Okay, the Blu-ray playback still looks mangled. The browser is still incredibly slow. The store doesn't look or react any differently. No background downloading... Hrm"

Okokok...Sorry, forgot about the Backwards compat and saves...
Indeed seeing that the HD is optional in the 360 I now understand I asked a stupid question...
(there are no stupid questions, only stupid people)

However, does the playstation3 operate without a hard disk?
(Wouldn't think so, but some of the above threads say differently)
And if not, is the OS on the hard disk?
And if so, how much does it occupy?
  • twinbee #28 5 years ago

My brother also has a PS3 that he's going to sell. And 1.11 divided into three just doesn't work right.

I say ridge racer on ps3 in a shop today, even had a quick go. The graphics were completely unimpressive but was quite fun

You are missing out it also needs some fun original games that will be remembered for their great playability if not their sales at retail. :p

    > the one thing missing to turn the PS3 into the next Dreamcast... piracy

Easy piracy was one of the factors that made the PS1 and PS2 the big successes they were.
  • palmoff #35 5 years ago

Kotaku are reporting the PS3 crashing since the update?!?!
  • chupachups #36 5 years ago

"Easy piracy was one of the factors that made the PS1 and PS2 the big successes they were."

So those PlayStation dominated games charts were because of piracy were they?
  • IAmBatman #37 5 years ago

"So those PlayStation dominated games charts were because of piracy were they? "

Partly, yes. But I can tell by your sarcasm you don't understand how it'd work. Lots of free games means it's the system lots of people are going to get. And since it's the system most people have, when it it comes around to game buying time (saspending birthday money, or christmas presents), it's the system most copies get sold for.

Piracy helps make consoles a success.
  • The12thMonkey #38 5 years ago

So where does my local branch of CEX fit into this 1.11?
  • Mordum #39 5 years ago

    @bcolter
I can see what you mean... but I've never found any of the 360's updates/patches a 'hassle'. simply auto updates and then I carry on with what I wanted to do. I don't know how the PS3's updates'patches work, so I can't comment on that.
  • smelly #40 5 years ago

You have to WAIT for downloads on the ps2. No running it in the background!

You have to WAIT for downloads on the ps3. No running it in the background!

I also heard that there's no option to turn off the auto-run either... Took them one year to add this simple option on the PSP, how long for "the real next gen"?
  • Lacero #42 5 years ago

I purchased the first XBox because I was tired of the upgrade cycle and patching on the PC... But with this current "Next Gen" (marketing tripe) generation of consoles its like we are taking a step backward with being user friendly and hassle free.

Judging by the games I've played on my PC this christmas, while the consoles are taking a step backwards the PC is doing a running backwards dive. Splinter Cell:DA was almost unplayable due to bugs.
  • frankthurk #43 5 years ago

Is Eurogamer this bitchy and negative with everything or just PS3 stuff?
  • Psychotext #44 5 years ago

frankthurk: Pretty much everything. Unless it's games with ladyboy main characters and then they're all over it. =D
  • Roddy100 #45 5 years ago

I noticed that too. Eurogamer really have it in for Sony and their attitude seems to be contagious among a vast majority of it's readers.

Can't we all just get along?
  • #46 5 years ago

ive noticed this too.. seems they like Sony bashing.. Very unprofessional imo.
  • Mordum #47 5 years ago

    You guys are joking... right?
  • tnomad #48 5 years ago

How can you guys claim they're anti Sony when every time Rob posts anything the comments thread is filled with comments about pro-Sony biased he is. You're all mentalists!
  • Genji #49 5 years ago

    Ahahaha, that's great.

You have one group of people saying that EG is anti-X360, and another saying that they're anti-PS3.

I guess you can't please anyone, really.
  • Rodster #50 5 years ago

I patched my PS3 today and all is good. :)
  • davisorle #51 5 years ago

I feel so sorry for the guys ( Specially in europe that paid much much more ) that fell for sony's new console. It's not just "something" that they resold most of those consoles on Ebay or whatever... It's just sad known that Sony updated their so messed up console that was even delayed for a whole year and none of the probs were solved... BUT STILL THOSE GUYS ARE HAPPY WITH IT... "No comments"
  • Jamaicangmr #52 5 years ago

I really don't get it sinse when is a path a bad thing? should the lack of it be concidered bad? Sometimes it's just sad the lil things that grabbed on to and magnified. No real gamer would want a console to fail because they would understand the importance of competition. Yes we all critic them but it shouldn't be done in the hopes of any particular console failing. I see the problem as way too many yes men. The article even said it took 15mins then in bracket it said (CURSED INTERNET) in bold letters yet some insisted on sayin the PS3 took 15mns to download a patch. WOW! Thats just basic reading and comprehension but i guess anything to bash Sony. Logic is dead to many of you...
