Nevrax goes into receivership

Ryzom team trying to save MMO.

The developer of the MMO Saga of Ryzom, Nevrax, will go into receivership in December, but officials from the company are confident the game will continue to be supported.

The French developer recently launched an expansion pack, Ryzom Ring, enabling players to develop their own content for the MMO.

"While the game will continue to run and be supported, Nevrax (as a corporate entity) will be going into receivership next month," said a statement from the company.

"We emphasise again that the game will continue to run and be supported as this is not the beginning of the end - just the end of the beginning."

Although the future of the game is in doubt, the developer has hinted that "a company has emerged and are currently preparing a plan to take on Ryzom."

"We can't tell you more at the moment since it is being discussed... we can assure you that much is happening behind the scenes," offered the company.

As a result all current subscribers have received one month free access to the game, but newly created trial accounts cannot be upgraded to full, paying accounts.

    It is a shame really. Ryzom is a good game and the Ring is a great addition to MMOs.

    That's a bit poo, right before christmas.

    I hope they all find better jobs elswhere, with more money and stuff.

    Yeah well, Ryzom did actually suck a little. One of the worst things a developer can do is try to maintain an mmo that's average at best. It's just not financially possible.

    its not that its bad - its just no one plays it. Everyone is playing that 'other' game... ;)

    I suppose it might have gotten better since the open beta but it was lousy back then. Can't see them having re-written it.

    This highlights the risks a player faces with MMO's, you invest substantial time in an MMO, which is worthless if the company folds.

    I hope for the players sake that the story is correct and the MMO will survive.

    Is nice to give people a month free though.

    I considered the trial but just couldn't be arsed to download the client.

    The game itself is good, but there's not much content. It's pretty much a grind fest and what a grind fest it is! You have the freedom to build your own template and level each branch up to lvl250, if I remember correctly. They needed more quests, although I'm sure Ryzom Ring helped a little. Great community too.

    I hope the team get back on their feet. They seemed to listen and care about their game and community.

    Just in case anyone is interested, or indeed doubted the stupidity of the grind, here's a skill tree :)

    I remember the beta, I was part of it. And I played it for a while after as well, was a nice little MMO back in the day. Sad to hear it's in trouble, but then - as sid, the MMO market is dominated by one giant colossus and ever since, the competitors have more or less been screwed... Nevrax never seems to have had a huge pool of finances, unlike other MMO developers, so this was probably inevitable...

    Still sad... was my first beta test, this one, and not of the open kind either. Thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game and hope it gets back on its feet...
