Daxter dev's new PSP game

Based on a licensed property.

Ready At Dawn, the studio behind rather excellent PSP adventure Daxter, has confirmed that a second game for Sony's handheld is already in development.

In an interview with QJ.net, RAD president Didier Malenfant said: "We're working on a new PSP game which is using a licensed property. Just like Daxter, it's a project we pitched to the people who owned the rights to the property as opposed to having a publisher come to us with an idea.

"Just like Daxter, it's our very own take on the licence and I'd be very surprised if this doesn't become one of the most anticipated PSP game when it's announced," he added.

The new game is "already light years away from what Daxter achieved in terms of performance," according to Malenfant.

"We're going to push the limits once again with this game, and I'm very excited about this."

Malenfant also confirmed that the engine RAD used to make Daxter is now being licensed to third parties. "The response has been awesome so far, especially when the developers realise that the best part about it is not just the rendering engine but the complete content creation pipeline that we provide with it.

"We're calling it the "Ready At Dawn Engine"," he stunningly revealed.

There's no word on when the new game will be released, which is hardly surprising since they haven't said what it's called or which licence its based around. But we'll keep you posted.

why does everyone rate Daxter so much?
The game was as generic as they come.
It even had bosses with weak spots for massive damage.

I liked daxter. I didn't think it was revoutionary or anything but it was good fun. I don't really see the problem with bosses like that... I hate boss battles, so something I can defeat in a few goes after spotting a pattern is fine by me.

contrary to popular belief not all bosses have weak spots to hit for massive damage. My boss gave me the sack when i hit him.

Sometimes they have fake weak spots - maybe you got fooled? The belly is usually one of those.
  • lambtron #5 6 years ago

In my experience the boss' weakspot invariably turns out to be the much younger secretary...

Wasn't the purpose of Daxter, the reason of it being a Jak and Daxter game specifically designed with the PSP from day one?

I have no qualms for a fun PSP platformer without all the usual PS2 ported problems of Camera Angles and and framerate problems.

The world needs more Daxter and GTA:LCS.

2D Oddworld (with 3D visuals if it must) using the DPad, please.

I liked Daxter, shame it was so short.

Ah, so that's why my wife calls my cock 'Daxter'.

"My money's on another Crach Bandicoot game.... "

Hey, if it's by a company that related to Naughty Dog, then a new crash game would be great, just like the good old PS1 days...

Well, Monsieur BadBoy is certainly a good self-promoter, that slagging off he gave to... pretty much every PSP Dev has got them running to buy his engine. VROOM VROOM!

"why does everyone rate Daxter so much?"

Because it was a fun game.

"The game was as generic as they come."

So are a lot of great games, doesn't make them less fun.

"contrary to popular belief not all bosses have weak spots to hit for massive damage. My boss gave me the sack when i hit him.

See, i have a magic sword that makes my boss' weak points glow when i get near him. ;)

"Because it was a fun game. "

I agree... also the closest you'll get to a "classic" 3D platform game these days, which is rare to find.

Daxter was ace even though it was at a times a try-and-die-try-and-die affair. The reason? You die, you restart. Right away. Bingo! A Game.

Alternatively - Tomb Raider try-die -waitforfortysecondswhileweloadthelevelagain-try-die... Um Bongo! An exercise in mustnotbiteoffownfingersagain self control.

Ready At Dawn are doing the PSP owners a massive service by licencing this tech.

    Love them ...go on!

Daxter was a brilliant, fun game. I can't wait to see what Ready At Dawn release next. It's great news they're letting other devs use this engine.

Daxter, one of the platformer games atm on psp..and could quite possibly be one of the best on psp in general.Shooting games i find dont quite work out so efficiently on psp as they do on the ps2.
