Polarium flips to GBA News

GameBoy Advance News by Corey Brotherson

28 July, 2005

Nintendo is making a Game Boy Advance version of DS puzzle game, Polarium, set for release in Japan on October 13th according to Famitsu.

Although one of the less popular games in the DS launch line-up, Nintendo has seen fit to give its older handheld a shot of the tile-flipping title that was good enough to gain seven marks out of ten when we had a look at it.

The GBA version will feature a total of 365 stages, triple what the DS version saw, and a removal of the original's Challenge Mode in favour of an enhanced Puzzle mode. Further to those, Stage Mode and Time Attack Mode will partner the Edit Mode seen in the Dual Screen iteration.

Improvements include the ability to set the colour of the in-game tiles, which also now feature extra special panels from the normal black and white ones used. These new tiles take three forms, Kotei (fixed) Panels, Hurdle Panels and Multi Panels. The latter are adaptable to both black and white tiles, disappearing when other panels in the same row match and Hurdle Panels act as obstacles. The Kotei versions, once erased, allow panels above them to fall through them.

Expect more information, along with any news of a European version, as we get it.

Those all sound like excellent improvements - the game was way too small.

Won't it be a bit crap without stylus control?

Puzzle mode should be totaly playable without the stylus. This will be great on a GBA micro. Simple bursts of brain teasing.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Quite a daft difficulty curve.

I never got past it either. Level 1 and 2 are OK, up until Level 3. It's so hard.
Anyway, this game seems to be really good.

Burton: If you've somehow exhausted Meteos already, or just don't like fast paced puzzling action, Polarium is good enough. But it's not very exciting, just very ... clever, in a Go kind of clever way.

If you haven't played Meteos, I'd suggest you get that instead. That's really the new Tetris. Only Mizuguchi'd.

Do you like staring at those weird patterned pictures, trying to "see" the Cornwall Coastline? That's what puzzle mode reminds me of :)

Nah, liked the puzzles, but didn't like my mobile gaming to consist of staring intently at the screen, without action, for minutes at a time...

Polarium wasn't that popular aat launch because it was the first (and only) budget title! In bundle deals people wanted to feel like they were getting their money's worth, so got 1 or 2 full priced games instead 8)

Why Nintendo why?
I really don't see the point in making DS ports onto the Game Boy Advance. Nintendo have other things to worry then making GBA and GC games. They need to get focusing on the Revolution, and further titles for the DS. Instead of making Polarium for the GBA, why not try and release new colours of DS over here, or summthing like that, itstead of making crappy games like Super Mario Strikers, Mario Tennis Advance, Mario Baseball etc
