Heroes OAE open beta

Of Annihilated Empires.

GSC Game World's offering PC gamers a chance to sample its upcoming real-time strategy and RPG cross-breed, Heroes of Annihilated Empires, by way of an open beta release.

Basically it's a one-mission demo, weighing in at 209MB. Allegedly it's available from the official site, although we can't access that at the moment so try a mirror instead.

Minimum specs for the demo are a 1GHz, 256MB RAM, 64MB video card system, although you'll need something with a 2GHz CPU, 1GB RAM and double the video RAM to meet the recommended specs. DirectX 9.0c is a prerequisite.

"With this beta version we deliberately lay a spell of enjoyment on you!" the readme file rather giddily declares. Judging by comments we've read about it, it's not working, but let us know what you reckon eh?

    I played this.

Dumbest Line: Lich Lord talking to Elf; "You must realise that you are othing but a mortal HUMAN"

Not exactly that but along those lines. Terrible voice acting aswell.

This one's baffling to be honest. The story (generic Tolkien affair but with tanks and stuff randomly popping up) seems fairly interesting and the RTS side of things seems to revolve around chucking hundreds of units about on screen at once. Thing is though it doesn't have the sense of scale or depth of something like Total War, it just feels like a standard C&C clone but with 500 units instead of 50.

Frankly it's all just a bit odd.
