Day of Defeat: Source released

Download now via Steam.

Day of Defeat: Source, the Half-Life 2 engine reworking of the original WWII-based DoD Half-Life mod, is now available through Valve's Steam service.

Priced at $19.95, it lets you choose whether to join the axis or allies as they battle it out on updated maps. Expect Source-powered graphics, improved lighting, ragdoll physics and new character, weapon and world models.

Speaking of rag dolls, don't forget that Rag Doll Kung Fu will also be available via Steam from October 12. The brainchild of Lionhead's Mark Healey, it's a funky fighter inspired by classic Kung Fu movies and will be priced just $12.95 - find out more from the Rag Doll Kung Fu website.

    No demo :(

How am I supposed to know if this is worth splashing out on? Looks like fun, but is there much to it that I can't get in BF2 and CS:S?

One another note, a demo is promised for Ragdoll Kung Fu so I'll definitely be trying that out.

It's a good game, worth the £12~. It gets very intense at times. It's an adrenaline game at time.

There's a few things that need tweaking but that will be addressed I'm sure when Valve get the chance. If anyone at Valve is reading this, PLEASE TAKE OUT THE STUPID FEATURE OF WINNERS BEING ABLE TO KILL THE DEFENCELESS LOSING TEAM. Also, why did you balance all the guns to be exactly the same?
  • Celeborn #6 6 years ago

Thats just over $12... only £6 according to the website!. bargain

Only 4(!) maps but they all play great, it all just seems so much more slicker than DoD 1.3 and it looks the part too, kudos valve

Also, that winners killing the losers bit is my fav :) even when i lose i love just hiding from an angry mob

managed to play it this morning before work. it's pretty cool, and as i hadn't played the original i wasn't sure what to expect. the weapons are a bit more difficult to aim compared to cs:s. shame i can't turn the hdr lighting on and get the game running at a reasonable frame rate though :(

For those of you having performance issues:

    1. Turn down your settings - DoD adds some new tricks over HL2
    2. Find a server that kicks high ping players!!!!!!!!!! (I've yet to find one! :( )

I turned off the HDR as it was really annoying (stupid blinding light etc).

For online, competetive gameplay everyone will have it turned off anyway. For better framerates.

Shame my X800 XT PE is fucked. Thanks stupid lightning that strikes my house, and hello random black triangles that appear all over the place when i play games :(

    grr

PS DoD is good fun, really fast paced, I think I'll stick with BF2 though and use DoD for some light relief occasionally when no one can be arsed to go to the pub.

Not just for better framerates - HDR bleaches out enemies in the open and darkens those in cover so it makes it harder to see your opponent - that'll be the main reason ppl switch it off for competitive play.

    Weapons. The same?

You have to be kidding. The M1 Garand is like a pea shooter taking 3 chest shots to bring someone down, while I took down 2 men with one shot from the Kar98. Unscoped of course.

The M1 may have a higher firing rate but it's recoil is about 5 degrees while the Kar is 0 degrees.

I can't comment on any changes made since the HL Mod though, since I could never get those versions to work, even the one Source downloaded.

Brilliant game, very competitve game play and the quality of some recent custom maps are breathtaking.

The best WWII shooter game out in my opinion, and my poor old laptop with only a 64meg gfx card handles the game brilliantly.

Highly recommended - wish there was an official review.
