Says Monkey Island creator.

Seen the trailer for the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie? Well a bloke called Ron Gilbert has, and he's not too happy about it.

Gilbert, as fans will know, created legendary PC adventure series Monkey Island. It featured loads of pirates, including the villainous LeChuck - who Gilbert reckons bears a striking resemblance to a character in the new movie.

In a post on his blog, Gilbert wrote: "So, I'm looking through my neighbour's window with a pair of binoculars, trying to see the TV to figure out if they have HBO that I can steal when the latest trailer for the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie comes on and I'm thinking to myself, 'Hey, I've seen this before... No... I've played this before... No... I've designed this before!' I'm thinking, 'This is the Monkey Island Movie!'

"Yeah, they kind of screwed up his beard, but that's LeChuck, and let's be honest, if I'd thought of the squid tentacles for a beard, I would have done that."

Naturally, Gilbert raced down to his mailbox expecting to find a big fat royalty cheque - but "No such luck. Two overdue credit card bills and a flier from some guy offering to Trim My Hedges, which I'm sure is just an innuendo for Wash My Cars, and I think we all know what that means."

Gilbert's not worried though: "Disney will do the right thing."

Er, the words blood and stone spring to mind. Best of luck on that one, Ron--do the right thing and take them to court. Imagine; you could finance a proper sequel then, at long last!

I think he was joking as the pirate in er..pirates...actually looks like Cthulhu from the lovecraft novels.

The humour is definitely Monkey Island though. Duel with your wits not your sword

Erm, hate to be the one to remind you, Ron, but didn't you admit a few years back that Monkey Island is based on the Pirates of the Carribean ride at Disneyland...? Nevertheless, after the MI film was axed a few years back (I kid you not), this is the next best thing.

And this is coming from a true pirate. Yarrr!

"I was sorting through some boxes today and I came across my copy of Tim Power's On Stranger Tides, which I read in the late 80's and was the inspiration for Monkey Island. Some people believe the inspiration for Monkey Island came from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride - probably because I said it several times during interviews - but that was really just for the ambiance."

One night, lamenting the apparent downfall of his series, he went to wipe his nose, and overtired, instead of a tissue, found in his hand the ingredients list for grog. He mixed up the concoction (believing it to be a competent cure-all) according to the game's description, and consumed. He's only just recently awoken.
