HL2: Lost Coast trailer News

PC News by Ellie Gibson

27 April, 2005

A new trailer for Half-Life 2: The Lost Coast is now available for download from good old Eurofiles.

It might take a while to download at 179MB, and you only get a minute's worth of footage for all that, but what pretty footage it is - the trailer is designed to show off the High-Dynamic Range rendering that's being used in the expansion.

You can read a full preview of Half-Life 2: Lost Coast here.

You see a couple headcrabs crawling on the floor and water on the floor. Its all pretty pointless and dull.

As a needless aside though, thank goodness for sites like this and FileRush that use the BT system for file distros. It's great sticking it to lame, "wait in line" sites like fileplanet and the like.

I just feel bad for all those guys who actually paid for file planet accounts.

Personally, I'd rather right-click > save as...

And dont start shouting at me about bandwidth issues...

Good news on that front, we're going to have a FTP server shortly to back-up our Bittorrent downloads for those who can't torrent. Stay tuned.

I tried this High Dynamic Range lighting on Far Cry, with my 6800GT...
all it did was to make everything look washed out and bleached...oh and it also halved my frame rate...all in all pretty useless....

yeah I'm not too fussed about this lighting either. Graphically the Unreal 3 engine is the only thing that has made my jaw drop recently

i feel conned.

I want my 15 mins of bandwidth back :)

I guess we're so used to being blown away, that when something mundane is shown it really says 'meh'!

It's all about the gameplay - not how many teraflops on the thingmagig the teraengine can push per unit times10tothepower4.

If it plays well, i'll play it. If not then I won't bother.

That's just a little bloom effect, not true HDRI lighting.
Gametrailer have the trailer up aswell, much smaller and it streams.

Well it does look pretty awesome.

Im looking forward to this!

It will be good to the the engine put under some pressure. HL2 is a work of art on every level, running on high and low end machines whilst looking consistently good. Seeing some improvements specifically for high end machines, well - I'm expecting big things :)

old access adventure games were "photo-realistic", so what. photo-real is so 15 years ago.

well at least this video didn't require steam ...

Yeah, great, it simulates the bloom effect that you get when you point a camera at a dark area that borders a much brighter area. Groovy! Photo-realism for life, yo!

Except these games are supposed to simulate the world as seen through someone's eyes, so the effect isn't particularly realistic at all...

I assume by watching this video, you might spoil the enjoyment of playing the level once released?

Not at all - it's less than one minute of footage and basically consists of a slow sweep around the outer edge of a grand room with a brief clip of the sun-setting over some (rather cool looking) water at the start.

It does look fantastic though.

Seeing developments like this in the gaming community makes me wonder...

After true, honest to goodness photo-realism is achieved... what then?

Graphics seem to be the only category in which the gaming industry seems to be making any meaningful progress.

this is gona turn out to be another thing that will annoy the hell out of me.. like lens flair in FPS's.. stuff like this is oky in racing games or 3rd person etc, but FPS's are surposed to show what things look like thou a persons own eyes, and last time i checked i didnt get lens flair or High Dynamic Range lighting in my eyes... maybe on my digial camera, but then when taking photos this stuff is excatally what u want to avoid!.
