New TR: Legends trailer

And interview with Toby Gard.

Eidos has released a new trailer for Lara Croft's latest adventure, Tomb Raider: Legend.

It's being developed by Crystal Dynamics with the help of Toby Gard, the man who invented Lara and who has since had to watch her painful decline.

"I saw the opportunity to help reinvigorate Lara, who in all truth has ended up in a bit of a mess," said Gard.

"I've always been a fan of the underdog, and many people have said that Lara is no longer interesting. I think that's rubbish; Lara is a fascinating character, and I wanted to be able to help people see that again."

So what can fans expect from the new game? Well, "We're revisiting the best bits from the original games and are working to dynamically evolve that initial Tomb Raider experience... We're making a conscious effort to capture that sense of awe people had when discovering the first game in the series," Gard explained pleasingly.

But: "This TR is much more action based than previous ones. So expect action with an extra side portion of mayhem."

The storyline is yet to be revealed, but Gard did say that TR: Legend "Will be setting the foundations of a cast of recurring characters that will carry on in the series.

"There have been many, many characters who have come and gone, it would be nice to get to know some of them instead of being introduced to them, only to have them immediately get killed off."

Gard declined to comment on previous instalments, claiming: "Haven't played them all unfortunately." However, he did say that "The original will always secretly be my fav." You can read the full interview on the game's official website.

Tomb Raider: Legend is out on PC, PS2 and Xbox in early 2006. And some of us are already so excited we keep coughing up all little bits of sick.

doesn't sound like he's very good at keeping secrets then.

I'd personally rather have less action and more puzzles (like the excellent sands of time) than more action and less puzzles (the Warrior Within).

I think they need to take Tombraider right back to the basics of puzzling and exploring. That's what sparked my enthusiasm for the orignal TR anayway..........

Funny how the link to the interview redirects to the eidos page :) once you select your territory

The time is now for a rude Lara Croft game.

Trailer makes it look like it could be good.

Although I feel I must quantify my statements by saying that I really enjoyed Galleon.

    Oh.... bah!

You just don't get it do you, Toby? Eh? EH?

I'm hoping this is just trying to advertise the game to action fans who want to see Lara with twin-RPGs on the shoulders...

Yep, same for the rest of us Toby, and it sounds like it still will be after Legend is released because for some reason you're insisting on making the same mistakes they made with every other TR game since.

No one wants "action with an extra side portion of mayhem", why can't you see that?

    Action based?

    Wich part doesn't Toby understand?
We are sick of too much action in Tomb Raider, as we're sick of vehicle bull***t...

How can he keep saying he's going back to the routes?
The true wonder of the original TR was the sense of exploration and the superb atmosphere surrounding those ruins.
    Why, won't they understand it?

Ohh, and please don't ever, EVER again, put a love interest for Lara in a TR game.
That totally destroys the mood and the character itself.

By the way, the best TR was "TR : Last Revelation".
Even better than the first one, and where the series should've ended.

To be honest, it looks good to me. Gard is clearly emphasising the action side to draw away comparisons with later instalments in the series and their dated (shudder) control schemes. If anything, the early non-trailer footage suggests most of the action will borrow heavily from Sands of Time, with poles, ropes, ledges, wall-jumping and all that jazz. Throw in more satisfying combat (WW went too far; SoT was too repetitive) and there's every chance this could be great.
