'No plans' for more Oblivion News

PSP PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

26 April, 2006

Bethesda Softworks says it has no plans to do PSP and PS3 versions of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, despite what some-bloke-on-a-forum said. (Yep.)

"At present we have no announced plans to bring Oblivion to any platforms other than PC or Xbox 360," is the official line issued yesterday.

That's after a chap called "snatches" on the Gaming Age Forums claimed they were - and that the games were due out this November. Apparently the source was a "release list from Bethesda".

Since then, he's responded to news of Bethesda's cold water by saying "if this news isn't true it's because some sales idiot at Bethesda sent out incorrect info".

So there you go.

"no announced plans"

But when they finally announce them then they'll be announced plans, right?

Part of the wonder of Oblivion can only happen because it is on such a poweful machine as the 360. That goes away when it is ported to the PSP I'm afraid.

Yup, there's hardly any gameplay under the nice exterior so of course it wont work on other consoles than the Xbox 360.

What happened to the usual line.

"We do not comment on rumours or speculation"

That isn't a definate no we're not porting Oblivion to other consoles.
And especially that it's come from some random forum goer they could of killed off the rumour completely.

The PSP thing could be a spin off, there have been at least as many spin offs as actual ES games released in the ES universe, even some for mobiles.

"no announced plans" means it's happening, lol. They even added, according to other sites, "but if that changes, we'll certainly let you know". I think they'll be letting us know at E3.

yeah, slightly bogus reporting there, 'no plans' is almost 100% different from 'no announced plans'

'no announced plans' is actually tantamount to saying 'plans'

you could have said 'Bethesda plan to bring oblivion to PS3' and your strapline would be more accurate

And of course it's f***ing coming out on PS3! Sales idiots may be idiots, but they also tend to have FY plans laid out in front of them. Somewhere on T2's network is their internal release schedule, and in that schedule I guarantee you will find this line:

Oblivion - PS3 - Q3 '06

Sorry, but it simply will not be oblivion on the PSP. I don't see how they can fit all of the voice acting for a start, and keep it streaming in a timely fashion, let alone the size and detail of the towns. It may be based on oblivion, but it won't be anything closely resembling it IMHO. If it is, then I'm in big trouble, because I'm already hooked on the 360 version, let alone one that can be played during Eastenders.

I'd be very surprised. Porting windows 360 is quite a lot easier than windows/360 -> 'something weird and Sony'. I think we'll see more of this in future - in addition to the normal console games, more ports of PC based titles with adapted controls, coming to 360 and not the PS3. The PS3 of course will have more than enough of its own software anyway. Having been a die-hard Sony fan for years, their recent behaviour is such that I'm not getting a PS3 unless a REALLY good reason appears, I'm happy with my 360, even if it doesn't have Toy Story graphics.

"No announced plans'? Hmm...Something is cooking somewhere. I can smell it. Yes, it is a PSP running Oblivion: Essentials or Oblivion:Tactics or something. Plus it would only make sense to bring it to PS3, to bring in even more sales.

bloodflowers - all the engines and middleware used by Bethesda in Oblivion is available to PS3 developers. Porting should be relatively straightforward.

Anyone else thinking Sony will probably enjoy a lot more "PC developer" support this time around compared to PS2? Xbox seemed to enjoy that almost exclusively last time, and it got a fair number of exclusives by default because of it. But that seems to have changed with PS3 and 360 - most of those same kinds of developers e.g. iD, Epic, Crytek, and now possibly Bethesda, are working on PS3 too. That could rob 360 of a lot of the character than the Xbox enjoyed, whereby it got a lot of PC-crossover where PS2 got none (e.g. Doom3, Riddick, Half-Life 2 etc.), and where it had the best versions of multiplatform games. PS3 = best of east, west, and PC-ports?

The Dark Brotherhood quests are the best so far for me. If you think the early missions are dark, they get worse (or better depending on your perspective) believe me.

I haven't felt regret like that when playing a game since I slapped my gibbon about in the first Black and White to then see the sad look on his face.

About a week ago whilst playing Oblivion, I had to kill someone's pet dogs when I was burgling their house, because despite being friendly enough they were making too much noise. I felt distinctly unclean afterwards. I like friendly pet dogs I do, boo hoo, I hate myself.

Oke, considering Bethesda's 'outstanding' trackrecord of creating stable code, i wouldnt bet my life on it. Porting it to the 360 was realivly easy. Now they have to rewrite everything for the ps3? Totally different system. On top of that, would MS really let one of their flagship products go that easely? On the other hand, bethesda is obviously looking at ways to grow. So it might hold some truth to it, but i wouldnt count on it anytime soon.

Not completely accurate. If they are part of a plot that you are involved in or haven't done yet, they only get knocked unconsious. These have a crown as their indicator when you face them.

Unimportant "normal" people just have a "Speech head" as their indicator and their lives should be snuffed out like a spent tea light. Muahahahaha.

Xerx3s - True, Bethesda isn't the most technically outstanding developer. But they are heavily middleware reliant (Gamebyro, Havok), and all of that middleware is on PS3. They've probably been working on this for some time, also, if this is actually true.

Also, it's not MS's game. Bethesda-developed, Take2 published. MS would have to ink a deal with Bethesda to keep it off other systems, and as far as I know they haven't done that. MS have termed it as a "console exclusive" before, and that wouldn't necessarily be untrue..until other versions shipped.

It's games like Oblivion that really make you question the logic behind an even bigger storage medium. I mean, they can fit a world THAT BIG on a DVD and we need MORE?!

Besides, I doubt the PS3 is powereful enough to cope with the game or it's fanbase with a non-japanese RPG.

vir2l [a mobile company related to bethesda] has made a j2me version of oblivion, so while this doesn't directly contradict what they're saying, it does leave the door open to the possibility of more ports.

Oblivion does suck you into the game world a bit. During one quest a NPC friend got killed, it had no bearing on the questline as it was the last section, but I still felt guilty because I'd cut them down in the dark without realising it, and now they were -dead-. Of course autosave had clobbered my last relevant save point when I left the dark corridor. Doh.

A world of ever-repeating art assets..yeah :P

Morrowind was arguably bigger, and fit into a much smaller space.

You could have games smaller in terms of world-size than Oblivion, with bigger space requirements.

Non Player Sausage. I think it something to do with the well known game of hide the sausage, except I guess the sausage in question is not player controlled?

Thought to be honest, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to get involved in a game of hide the sausage that involved any sausages other than the one I control.
