SingStar Anthems announced News

PlayStation 2 News by Ellie Gibson

25 May, 2006

Women and gay people of the world rejoice - Sony is planning to release a new instalment in the SingStar series that's specially for you.

SingStar Anthems features 20 music videos from pop's most glittering stars - "think Priscilla Queen of the Desert meets Kylie Showgirls tour", apparently.

Track list highlights include Laura by the Scissor Sisters, Candi Staton's Young Hearts Run Free and I Feel Love by Donna Summer. Not to mention Girls Aloud's Biology - quite possibly the best pop song EVER. And topping it all off there's a track by Steps - most definitely the best band EVER. Shame they've chosen Deeper Shade of Blue though, it's not a patch on Better Best Forgotten.

Anyway, SingStar Anthems - which certainly looks like being the best SingStar game EVER from where we're sitting - is out on August 4th, priced at £39.99 with two microphones or £19.99 on its own. Here's the full track listing:

  • Queen - Radio Ga Ga
  • Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart
  • Take That featuring Lulu - Relight My Fire
  • Cher - If I Could Turn Back Time
  • Steps - Deeper Shade of Blue
  • Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)
  • Candi Staton - Young Hearts Run Free
  • Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive
  • Bananarama - I Heard A Rumour
  • Pussycat Dolls - Don’t Cha
  • Leann Rimes - Can’t Fight the Moonlight
  • Donner Summer - I Feel Love
  • Bucks Fizz - Making Your Mind Up
  • The Weather Girls - It’s Raining Men
  • Ultra Nate - Free
  • Scissor Sisters - Laura
  • Kim Wilde - Kids in America
  • Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody
  • Girl Aloud - Biology
  • Charlotte Church - Crazy Chick

Radio Ga Ga, Kids in America, Laura, I Feel Love, I Will Survive, You Spin Me Round.

Any of these songs on their own would be more than enough to compensate for the unmitigated shit.

Yep, Ellie summed this one up perfectly - Women and gay people rejoice; everyone else, sulk. This is the first Singstar that has completely failed to entice me with its track listing.

Roll on Singstar on the PS3 when we'll be able to download whatever we like from the Singstore!

I liked that Steps video where the girls were in the wedding dresses. The dark haired one looked lovely.

Oooh, that's made me think of the other pop video with a *mumbles to himself before running off to the bog*

Seriously, just the fact that "Total eclipse of the heart" is on this makes it a must-have! This is what Singstar should be all about.

They should just release a single singstar and then charge for all the songs individually, they could come in like mp3's so that they are like legal song DL's, I hope that's how it works with the PS3. Oh and steps suxz0rs.

@JediMasterMalik - Yes, that's exactly what Singstar PS3 is going to be like. I had a couple of sings on it at E3 - the interface is just superb in HD (as well as the videos) and rather than just the one "circle" of songs that you cycle through, as in the current Singstars, you've now got multiple "circles" of tracks that you move between by pressing the L1/L2 buttons.

One of those circles was made up of coloured labels that said "Singstore" on them, with different buttons for different genres. I assume that if you press them when it goes live, it allows you to browse a selection of songs for download - certainly that's how it looked on Sony's big screen in the short video presentation that Singstar got.

Yeh NoCodeNed2, I just realised, i forgot they were videos, they could allow both mp3 and video DL's though. And thanks for the info Tricky. I haven't played a SingStar title yet, the PS3 version I may though because I can choose my own songs.

Haha, I read "Women and gay people of the world rejoice" line and was going to write "Oi, I love Singstar and I am neither"

... but then I read the track list... and I kind of take your point.

Its SingStar though, so its all good (hood optional).

"women and gay people of the world rejoice"? pfft. as a gay person of the world i'm certainly not rejoicing. there are maybe five decent songs on there, the rest of it is bollocks. singstar rocks is still the best one, in my opinion.

Totally right, aine - Singstar Rocks is far and away the best and I've only had a chance to have one go on it since I got it! Guitar Hero has been the only game I've played on the PS2 in the last month or so. That should change tomorrow night as I'm going over to my mate's house for a p*ss up.

As for there being only 20 songs... is that right? I mean they usually announce 15-20 songs initially and then announce the remaining ones closer to the release date.

Fans of gay anthems and tracks sung by divas rejoice?

@Tricky - yeh - I think the remaining tracks are the localised ones, is that right? It can't be 20 quid with only 20 tracks. Normally its 20 quid for 30 tracks.

Absolutely shockingly bad track list. The other Singstar games always have at least half of the list as gems, but I can barely find one song here that's worth it :(

Saw an article on gamasutra.com and apparently males made up 47% of Singstar purchasers, so it's a bit baffling that they'd release Anthems geared so heavily towards women (but then again, Rocks! was quite male dominated).

More importantly - only 20 tracks in the full version? Aren't there normally 30 tracks?
