Wizard's Tower for Oblivion

Plus, Oldblivion for manky PCs.

Oblivion fans who've exhausted the Orrery quest and have had enough fun with their shiny horses can now get their hands on The Wizard's Tower quest.

The Wizard's Tower costs 150 Microsoft points on Xbox Live Marketplace, which is around the same as it is in old money for PC owners - $1.89.

The tower's home to a powerful mage who wants you to look after it. In the tower you have an altar for summoning things and creating spells and enchanted items, a garden full of potion ingredients, teleporters to every mage's guild, and a bed to sleep in.

PC fans can download it from Obliviondownloads.com, while Xbox 360 owners can find it through the relevant Marketplace menus.

Meanwhile, PC gamers without DirectX 9 compatible graphics cards finally have some way to play Oblivion - a project called Oldblivion will patch various areas of the game to support a number of older graphics cards.

More details and download links can be had through the Oldblivion website.

Oldblivion is a great idea for all the peeps with ageing computers.
  • Talha #2 6 years ago

It's a great idea, full stop. Since Oblivion defines anything older than two months as 'ageing'. ;-)
  • Thamuhacha #3 6 years ago

Are you still having rat related FPS issues Talha? :-)
  • smelly #4 6 years ago

My machine is pretty old (in comparision to a few months).

Runs oblivion fine at high detail/high res modes.

Im still waiting for the bloody patch though.,

Why would they want to spend resources on a free patch, when they can keep releasing these add ons that no doubt were already part of the original game.Dont get me wrong as I love Oblivion but this is the third pay for add on in as many weeks and yet no sign of any patch at all yet....before they release anything else the patch should be a priority.....

    When's 'The Wizard's Sleeve' available? :D
  • smelly #7 6 years ago

    Hohohohoho.

That jokes about as original as jizmondo jokes.
  • Talha #8 6 years ago

@Thamuhacha : Actually these days I split my time between getting pummelled by rats in Oblivion (although my recent upgrade has helped), getting zapped by those flying tripod thingies in FEAR, successfully finding and managing to run my car over every spike strip the cops in NFS MW put out, and getting chopped to pieces by enemies in Level 4 of Black (and teleporting magically back to start of the level in the bargain).

Life is fun, and don't you GLOAT. ;-)

"Oldblivion is a great idea for all the peeps with ageing computers."

Yes, but if some current gen high end pc's have problems, htf are the previous gen pc gonna run it? Or did they just ditch some effects & made it less detailed?
  • Darkedge #10 6 years ago

and oblivion looks like arse on a low end machine so this is great then :S
  • Perry #11 6 years ago

Does this mean it will work on my PC? Anyone know how I can check if it will run on my 2 year old laptop? I'll be happy as the proverbial pig in its own filth if it can

    starts holding breath..............

i dont have a ageing computer, its just my radeon 9800 pro kicked in and i cant afford the upgrade to amd 64 right now.

    so huzzah! thanks for this.
  • Talha #13 6 years ago

Don't worry guys: Oblivion treats us all equally, be it a two-month-old setup or a two-year-old one. It's very equitable and democratic that way.

My brother has a lovely hi-spec PC, but the game just keeps crashing every time he plays it. I don't think hes managed more than about 15 minutes without a crash.

Glad I got the 360 version, I've still had a few crashes but nothing too major.

My Bro has the same probleme with his 7800 GS. Crashes quite often.

My Geforce 6600GT has surprisingly few crashes. There are definetly things that need to get patched.

But hey, if they find it more important to make more stuff to sell...
  • Talha #16 6 years ago

@smoison : I have a 7900GT and so far it hasn't crashed. That said, I must say that the sheer direness of NVidia's drivers must be responsible for half the problems being faced. Then again, most of us end up buying NVidia's hardware (best value for money, both in technology and performance), so they must be laughing all the way to the bank.

well, if anyone can get the damn thing to work it'd help. I've paid my money for it, downloaded it and got the activation code. Yet when you run the program it crashes! £1 approx may not be a lot, but when you pay for something, it's always nice if it works!

Unfortunately a look on the official forums shows that this has been a problem with every single official plug-in that's been released.

And with Bethesda not seemingly caring about the problem(well, they've not exactly done much to fix the problem) it seems like the only way to get the plug in (that actually works!) is by... less legal means.

I'd like (and many other people i don't doubt) an employee of bethesda to explain to us why it is that the plug-ins aren't working. If it's the amount of people trying to activate them, then why not put them on a better server / more servers (or something - i'm not the most technical of people!) to reduce the capacity of people trying to do it all at the same time?

    Shame on you Bethesda!

They'll just moan that it's your fault for trying to download something you paid for at the same time as everyone else.
What do you expect for your money nowadays? Service!? ;)
  • bdgr #19 6 years ago

true, although on the forums a lot of peole have said that you have to copy the exe file into a folder in the administrators doc folder on your pc, log out, log back in as the administrator, run the exe and then it should be fine!

which doesn't work (at least not for me).

the other solution is to shut down and boot up in safe mode to runthe exe, although that means not being able to use the interweb to activate it and having to phone them up with a big old phone bill to pay after!

I am not amused. I'll have to find another way to get the mod!
  • PearOfAnguish #20 6 years ago

Download it from bittorrent. I love Oblivion but fuck Bethesda if they're going to ignore repeated pleas for a patch then charge for tiny updates and refuse to give any kind of support.

They have said many times that a patch is one the way. To suggest people to pirate the game just because there hasnt yet been a patch after 3 weeks of sales. Shame on you!
  • Talha #23 6 years ago

@Bumbuliuz : well, for one thing, why does the game need a patch? Second, why are the PAID FOR mods not working? When you buy a game, it should work. That is in clause 7(a) section 287(b) of the Sales of Goods Act

    ... or something.

In any case, people talking here about pirating the game are doing so to get their PURCHASED game to work. That's a noble cause, and what's more, logical.

Tyrone said: "Why would they want to spend resources on a free patch, when they can keep releasing these add ons that no doubt were already part of the original game."

In fairness the people involved in making these mini-mods would all be artists and designers; maybe a single programmer doing a half a day's work. The people working on a patch would be nearly exclusively programmers, so these extra mods shouldn't effect the patch development at all. If they are then there's something seriously wrong with management over in Bethsoft :D

Meanwhile people with nVidia cards might want to try the 84.37 .v2 drivers over on Tweaks R Us; leagues better than the ones offered on nVidia.com; giving some folks an extra 15 fps in Oblivion.
