Gran Turismo HD shots

And a picture of the box.

Sony has released 29 new screenshots of PlayStation 3's Gran Turismo HD in action ahead of the game's release next month.

You can check them all out elsewhere on the site.

Meanwhile, what you see to the left here is the game's rather handsome Japanese box artwork, which we're printing to illustrate that it looks like "December" wasn't actually just a pie in the sky estimate.

Although, of course, whether the game ends up being any cop is another thing altogether - GT HD has already run into criticism because of Polyphony Digital's decision to offer the bulk of its content as downloadable extras.

'Gran Turismo HD shots' Screenshot 1

Still, at least it's got some cars in it. And at least they released some screenshots (god knows what else we'd write - I'd give thanks for some bloody press releases around about now).

I'll buy the game/demo if they price it right.
  • Sorb #2 5 years ago

Is it the box for Gran Turismo or Spider-Man though? :)
  • Talha #3 5 years ago

I think the box is gorgeous. Perhaps its a Ferrari in the background - they finally got got the big license so they will surely flaunt it.
  • numptyboymatt #4 5 years ago

Its actually the DVD case for the forthcoming fictional film Spiderman: Gran Turismo in which Spiderman battles to save the world from Evil Downloadable Content in a race against time before the world bankrupts itself.

I'm looking forward to buying this...and buying and buying and buying it until I have a complete game.

I don't understand the situation with this game - is it launched in Japan, or not? I saw it running on a Jap PS3 in my local shop in Hong Kong which suggests it is out, but didn't think it was yet and this article seems to confirm that.

Whatever it was I saw running (some kind of GT on the PS3), it was... odd. In some ways, really really beautiful (crowd animations, scenery), but in some ways not (for example terrible jaggies, not at all smooth-outed like the pics I've seen on this site)

Some of these screenshots look simply amazing.
  • Wash #8 5 years ago

    Yawn. not really that impressive.
  • dsmx #9 5 years ago

Not really hugely impressive, however for a game based on the gt4 engine it is impressive just shows how good an engine it was.
  • fizzer25 #10 5 years ago

Yeah saw the screenshot which looks like in game as most of them don't and wasn't that impressed really!!
  • Stormflood #11 5 years ago

Not sure I see anything new in that gallery /face confused

I do notice the beautiful wing mirror of the 599 on the box. That's what I want to see more of...
  • Dizzy #12 5 years ago

This is one of those games that look worse in action. The stunning backdrops are just piccies... not real 3D landscapes. It is a nice trick, but it works better in screenshots.
  • barnard666 #13 5 years ago

the environments don't look next gen to me, low poly, low res textures, nice blur covers that up, but blur screenshots are really really cheap, codemasters do it all the time, it never actually looks like the final game...PGR3 did it too, and test drive...
it looks OK, I just think the whole GT thing is really old now, "we might have damage one day" "maybe the AI wont be glued to a spline in a future release" Give me Toca anyday, its a billion times more exciting....
  • sh0cked #14 5 years ago

Personally I think you will find the car in the background is the NEW peugeot 308

After all the caption at the top is "The drive of your life" and thats a peugeot slogan!

... ahh the hints are there its all becomming clear and highly defined... the new GT will feature the entire peugeot back catalogue of cars!
  • Psychotext #15 5 years ago

Lets hope this isn't standard bullshot. Looks quite nice but then so did the motorstorm screenies and it looks nothing like it when you see the game in person.
  • Kostabi #16 5 years ago

Would it kill Sony to release in-game shots every now and then? GT has always looked lovely in replays, but it's never the same standard as the actual playable bit.
  • ChimneyBug #17 5 years ago

they did the same trick when they showed off the gran turismo psp box and umd which was due near launch, go down to the shops and try pick up your copy
  • psychokitten #18 5 years ago

Glad I'm not the only one that still can't get over how stupid the "Playstation 3" logo-text looks. Subconsciously I keep thinking "huh, Spiderman 3 game? Ohwait..."

    Those screenshots are dull :(
  • zoidberg #19 5 years ago

screenshots aren't that HD power we've been hearing about. they look out of place. search for something called GTR-2 and compare.
  • Xerx3s #20 5 years ago

I'm a bit confused, is this the new GT or just a rehash of the old one in HD?
  • renzo #21 5 years ago

"they did the same trick when they showed off the gran turismo psp box and umd which was due near launch, go down to the shops and try pick up your copy"

Heh! Those were my thoughts exactly. They even had the design for the UMD done for that little piece of vapourware.
  • renzo #22 5 years ago

"I'm a bit confused, is this the new GT or just a rehash of the old one in HD?"

I'd go with 'rehash' for this one, and GT5 will hopefully be the proper 'next-gen' one. Clue is in the naming.

The Cover disc image is from The Ferrari F430 (wingmirror)

Pfffff u ppl think u know cars. :p
  • HelloWorld #24 5 years ago

I don't know whether i want this or not. It depends on how it plays, and what cars there are and that. It doesn't appear to be awfully different to GT4.
Most of these shots seem to emphasise how shiny the cars look, but you only ever see them in replays. (or the rear view mirror, natch)
  • Pooley #25 5 years ago

Well, gotta admit it does look nice. And since GT4 was the game that made me decide to buy a PS2, this may be the game that makes me want a PS3.

I feel there's a big question mark over the downloadable content though. This could turn out to be an expensive game if you need to buy additional tracks and cars. Buying extra cars I can understand, reading about the resources they use to create each car, plus licences from the car manufacturers. But buying extra tracks to fill out the game seems dubious. If there's a sizeable number of tracks to start with, i.e. enough to play and enjoy the game, and the additional tracks are nice addons, then maybe that's okay. Because then you can download them or not. But if the game only ships with a few tracks and you NEED to buy more, then that's not good.

Wonder if my force feedback steering wheel will work in the PS3. Anyone know? Anyone? Anyone?

Actually, I think you'll find that it's the mirror from the 599 GTB. Granted, they look very similar, but the F430 has 'F430' imprinted into the outside of the mirror, and there is another detail that you can see if you compare a pic of the <a href=http://kenny2.globalnet.hr/autonet.hr/userd ocsimages/Premijere/Ferrari%20599%20GTB%20Fiorano/Ferrari-59 9-GTB-Fiorano-1024x768.jpg>599</a> with the boxart i.e. the raised wedge just below the mirror on the door.

Pfffff, and you think you know Ferraris. :)

  • chronom4n #28 5 years ago

I recently saw the HD trailer of the Fezza 599 running on the alpine track and guess what i noticed? as the car went slid around the hairpin, there was no skid marks on the road. Now if that is an indication of what is to come, then I am very unhappy. What has baffled me quite a bit, is to do with the rumble... GT has always been much more immersive with the rumble (can't imagine playing it without) so for me the game becomes pointless aside from the improved graphics. Personally I am waiting for the Forza2 pack.

I expect they'll send you some stuff once the console is out in Europe, eh? Now you know what it is like for the rest of us, having to wait!!

Pooley: Sadly I don't think there's any support for force feedback on the PS3. I'm sure you can still use the wheel though.
  • Zero Beat #31 5 years ago

  • Pooley #32 5 years ago

    @ Psychotext

Surely it's down to Polyphony to program force feedback support into the game? Obviously not for the SixAxis, but for the steering wheel only. My wheel was bought as part of an official bundle, i.e. GT4 and Steering wheel in one big box. I assume they'll do the same kind of thing again (though I'd rather not buy another wheel).

The steering wheel, for me, was the USP that made GT4 so good. I've played GT4 just using the game pad and it's nowhere near as good as using the wheel. Chalk and cheese.

That said, a wireless forcefeedback steering wheel would be tempting, as the PS2 wheel is a cable nightmare.
  • chronom4n #33 5 years ago

@pooley, completely and utterly agree with you. i went one step further and bought the gamepod racing furniture, the one with a cobra race seat and man it takes GT4 to an absolutely new level. I find it really difficult to play GT4 with a pad but the wheel.... now that is an absolute delight. I am hoping that there will be other 3rd parties who will come up with a sixxaxis with rumble. But going back to the wheel Pooley, on the paris opera track, there is a whole now sensation as you can feel the track and its bumps in all its glory as well as the le mans track with its super bumpy track and you have to whole onto the wheel for dear life!
  • Psychotext #34 5 years ago

Actually, I just looked into it and yes the force feedback from the wheel is supported. Good job Polyphony. =)
  • chronom4n #35 5 years ago

    Psychotext... thanks for that.

  • Pooley #36 5 years ago

    Thanks Psychotext. Brilliant!

Well, I guess the only question now is what they decide to do with the download side of it. And for that, I think we'll just have to wait... and probably complain about nearer the time.

This and the F1 game will definitely be two titles worth getting now.

@ Chronom4n, yep, the rumble strips, and the oversteer effects in corners. Specifically, the forcefeedback during the rallying stages was my favourite. As I've said elsewhere on this site, I actually own and drive a Lancia 16v Integrale. Unlocking this and playing the rally stages on GT4 was truly wonderful. I feel they got the handling of the Integrale just right, which really pleased me.

It's gonna be an expensive year 2007...
  • chronom4n #37 5 years ago

@talha, hello and how are you. didn't see you there earlier.

Personally, i do not like the 599, i like the 430 a lot more. Another thing that concerns me is how many of the fezza's are they going to have in the game or is it just the one car. Here's hoping that they include some of the scuderia ecosse cars and some old school fezza's.

@Pooley, man you are damn lucky that you own a lancia and considering that i do not own such a fancy car (stock nissan) its great to hear that the game physics mimick the real life physics.

Oh and before i forget, why is it that in Forza the lap times for nurburgring track are in the 7-8 mins as opposed to the lap times in GT4 are more in the 6-7 mins using some of the JGTC cars. can anyone help?
  • Vin #38 5 years ago

    Load of RUBBISH.

Buy Forza, Ridge - hell, ANYTHING apart from this obvious SHAFTJOB.

  • Canadian_Mike #39 5 years ago

    Just bring it out already!

I've got my Driving Force Pro 2, PS3 (just got it today, no lineup's or camp outs thank you) and credit card ready to rock.

...geeeze, Sony is gonna make a killing off me this gen. lol
  • Pooley #40 5 years ago

Has there been any further comment on the amount of tracks and cars in the actual game that you buy, compared to the number that you can download?

This really is my only concern now with this game.

I can understand their requirement to make a profit on the game, and the amount of development that they must have to do must be very expensive, but I hope that we don't buy the game and then have to purchase loads of content. The amount of content, i.e. cars and tracks, in GT4 is huge, and I hope that GT HD is close to this, and the downloadable content is seen as an extra and not a requirement to enjoy the game.

    Let's hope, eh!
  • TheRealBadabing #41 5 years ago

WOW!! Looks just as soulless as Gears of War!! Teh r3al next gen has arrived!!!

Seriously though, wasn't this meant to be on the HDD of all PS3s as a "free" extra? A sort of stop-gap until the real GT5 arrived? You know, the mythical online GT4 that never happened?

Are people actually getting excited about a PS2 game with HD textures? If so I would like to direct them towards some Xbox games which look much better on the 360 if you give me £50 plus £2.50 per level...
  • Pooley #42 5 years ago

I've got Rallisport Challenge 2 and PGR2 on the Xbox, and neither of them come near to the feeling of playing GT on the PS2.

I gave RC2 a spin the other night after reading about it on the EG feature on Xbox games. Graphically, I think it looks awful. Really flat and bland. Nowhere near as good as the rally stages on GT4.

PGR, to me, is not that good a game. I think the range of cars is too similar in performance to each other, so there's not that great a feeling of difference between cars. And what's the deal with the cone challenges? I hated these and just tried to get through each one as soon as I could to progress. Not enjoyable. I've also played PGR3 on a friends 360 and found it roughly the same, but with nicer visuals, and hard to read text on an SDTV.

Forza is of interest, but why should I buy another wheel to play a very similar game when I'm happy with GT4? I'll look into Forza on the 360 when it comes out, but it'll need to be good to persuade me to move from GT.
