Godfather downloads on Live

Buy guns, in-game money, etc.

Electronic Arts has released a bunch of guns and other trinkets for The Godfather on Xbox 360, although you'll have to pay for the privilege of using them.

In a move which absolutely won't inspire lots of shouting and complaints we're sure of it, you can pay between 40 and 150 Microsoft points for in-game currency, 100 points each for a range of level-4 weapons, or 800 points for "The Don Collection", which includes five level-4 weapons, lots of in-game money, and various other bits and bobs that can otherwise be bought separately.

There is a freebie, at least, called the MobFace Apparel Bundle, which for a limited time offers you a leather jacket, two hats, and two sets of glasses, allowing you to customise your appearance at an in-game tailor.

You can read all the specific details on Major Nelson's blog.

Seriously, go nuts.

I wonder if cheat devices like Action Replay will let you unlock stuff like this without paying? hmm.
  • MisterFalseName #4 5 years ago

So how much does that translate to in real money?
  • lambtron #5 5 years ago

If this gubbins takes off big style then there really will be no justification for the high price of games...

    Dear EA.

Just a fucking thought but wouldn't your efforts be better concentrated on trying to get people to actually buy the GAME in the first place, before starting the fleecing with microcontent? No?

    Idiots.

MS needs to remove EA from the Live service ASAP.

Letting companies run their own servers has proven to be the worst "idea" ever. If XBox 1 did not need EA at the time, things would have been a lot different. I guess that is what you get when EA supported PS2 and forced itself into a position where MS had to allow them access to Live.

Apparently in the new Mario game, every gold coin you collect takes a £1 out of your bank account. But dont worry once youve collected a 1000 coins you unlock a scarf and wooly hat for mario to wear

Here we go... The face of gaming is about to change forever I fear.

I will never, ever start parting with cash for such pish.

Heres a thought EA, instead of fleecing us 'suckers' why not get the voice chat working properly on the 360 version of Battlefield, you know, a game I've ALREADY PAID FOR.

@ Dizzy, true but a simple solution is not to support that shit in the the first place. I refuse to buy any of that crap and the sooner every realizes this the sooner companies will stop peddling their crap.
  • Whizzo #13 5 years ago

Is this the DLC that adds the entertainment?

Actually anyone who bought this pile of toss deserves to be ripped off.
  • gizmo #14 5 years ago

You can post on Major Nelson without registering. It's probably one of the most direct methods of making your point to MS.
  • skillian #15 5 years ago

Let no-one come in here complaining of "blind" EA bashing.

This company needs to bashed into pieces for pulling stuff like this (and if you buy it, then you should be bashed even harder :p).
  • gaselite #16 5 years ago

Um. Why blame EA for using a service provided and encouraged by Microsoft?

My simple solution to the whole thing: If you want the extra content, buy it, if you don't, don't. It's only shit when content in retail releases is deliberately held back so that it can be released later at a price, but even then it doesn't bother me much, and there's no evidence of that happening yet really. Price of games on shelves should be lower though.
  • Whizzo #17 5 years ago

So how much does that translate to in real money?

    The Don Collection is £6.80/€9.60.

    Hahahahaha

Hmm, that bothers me lots. :(
  • AcidSnake #19 5 years ago

Sure we could boycott them, but I need those level 4 weapons!

    I'm sorry, my point was:
Sure we could boycott them, but the vast majority will always buy trash like this...
Even worse, the new generation of gamers will assume that this is 'normal'...

By pissing the hardcore audience off like this you're practically asking hackers to attack XBL...

  • speedjack #20 5 years ago

Err... doesn't this make a mockery of the entire point of acheivemets on Xbox live ?

Why bother trying to get good at any game when you can buy better weaponry, more money etc, etc and make it all the more easier.

Still, its ironic that a game about Gangsters is holding it audience to ransom.
  • gaselite #21 5 years ago

"Hmm, that bothers me lots. :( "

In theory it bothers me but like I said, limited evidence of that actually being the case. Not only that, but it's not like it's an epidemic in the industry at the mo', and it's not like broken games with half the content they should have are shipping to stores (with the possible exception of PES6 on 360 ;_;). If this shit becomes regular then we'll have a problem, but the way I see it at the moment with regular microtransactions, Joe Consumer will either a) shun it and EA et al will rethink their approach to the whole thing or b) love it and EA et al will take it a bit more seriously and the whole microtransaction mini-industry might become a bit more competitive. The fact as it stands at the moment though is that games aren't shit just because they charge for a bit of extra content later on, a game's still a game.

What I do wish though is that the designers who are in charge of implementing these micro-transaction things tried to think about it from a gamers point of view. They used to be gamers once, they should ask themselves if they ever would have stood for this shit? Now I don't really mind because it's a choice thing and I just choose not to take advantage of it even though all 360 developers are well within their rights to offer the microtransactions. If they thought it through though, then maybe they could think of doing it in a way that gives your typical gamer greater incentive to take advantage of it, make the extra stuff you're buying worthwhile, make them WANT to buy it. Like I said though, if it's not, just don't buy it, simple as that.

I guarantee that in five years, this kind of thing will be the norm and gaming will end up being a much more expensive pastime for most people.

OK, so I can't guarantee it, but it seems to me that the industry is undoubtedly going in that direction. People like us who are bitching about it now will be left standing there like King Canute.

  • krudster #24 5 years ago

Why on Earth do you need level 4 weapons anyway? I've cleared the entire map with mostly level 1 weapons, and now have nothing else to do in the game apart from really pointless stuff like blowing up all the safes and collecting the movie reels.

How about more actual content, new missions, a new district, or something tangiable that adds to the game?

    Bizarre.
  • skillian #25 5 years ago

...more actual content, new missions, a new district...

I'm pretty sure this is what we all envisaged when the idea of DLable content was first being put around.

It actually seemed like a cool idea back then...
  • Baz_Dude #26 5 years ago

Typical EA, pack of rogues, hence why i never buy EA games
  • pjmaybe #27 5 years ago

Split down the middle again then.

Seriously - like Penny Arcade said, if Ubi get bought out by EA, gawd 'elp us all as gamers...

We'll all be rocking in our chairs in 5 years time recalling the heady days when you bought a game in a box and the game was actually in there.

And new levels was exactly what they promised as downloads a year or two ago, but when it comes down to it they cant be bothered to pay anyone to make anything cool like that. So they just give a programmer 5 minutes to create a new hat for characters to wear

  • Der_tolle_Emil #33 5 years ago

Oh how much I despise EA. "Buy guns, in-game money, etc." How low does it get? Good old days where you accomplished something in a game to get ingame money for which you can buy weapons. Now we walk into the shop, buy MS points and then buy the in game weapons.

I am quite a Microsoft fan (both 360 and PC related stuff) but I really think that Microsoft should consider taking actions against this. The marketplace is a great idea as long as it enhances the game. But being able to buy things to help you beat the game is as lame as buying gold in World of Warcraft.

I am really starting to seriously think to never ever buy something from EA again. Luckily that will not be that hard. I am only really interested in Battlefield anyway, but I passed on BF2142 and if EA mangles too much with the next Battlefield after buying DiCE I guess it will be just as bad as every other EA title around this time. Screw the useless sports games and Need for Speed.

I am all for Ubisoft now. Thinking about it, I really should play Sands of Time again. Boy was that fun.
  • Forebodin #34 5 years ago

  • Agent_Llama #37 5 years ago

EA prove, yet again, what a bunch of tossmonkeys they are. Someone mentioned about folks not seeing this happening when the whole downloadable content thing first emerged - it was obvious that this is what it would come to. But people will buy it. Morons.

GAH! I really, really hate this trend. And Microsoft for starting it, come to think of it. Oooh, and EA for wildly exploiting the system. Does anyone think that the playstation online system will follow suit? If it does, console gaming as we know it is thoroughly buggered.

However, there is still hope - Nintendo might be the knight in shining armor with their Wii. I sure hope so, or else I am out of the console-buying business.
  • Tyronne #39 5 years ago

what a load of old crap....
  • Darren #40 5 years ago

Does EA stand for Exploitation Artists by any chance?
  • PS3lol #41 5 years ago

It has begun, gaming has become a joke, a rip off, a way to milk fans for every penny they've got. You can expect the same crap on a PS3 soon enough. They will be leaving out whole chunks of a game just so they can charge extra for it later. Lumines on 360 has already done that. Now the Godfather lets you buy in game money with real money , no longer will you get cheats in a game now EA want you to pay for them.

If you pay for this stuff you're sending a dangerous message to developers that they can milk us to hell and back and we'll take it lying down. Don't buy it, and don't buy no more EA games. Boycott market place, boycott EA and anyone else who tries to take the piss out of us. It's the only way to save gaming as we know it. SPREAD THE WORD

FUCK EA and micro transactions. they are killing our games.

  • Nostromo13 #42 5 years ago

everyone is going overboad. You don't have to buy that stuff, so...yeah, there is no point in thinking about it too much.

  • lennon #44 5 years ago

When I wander round my local supermarket there is a ton of pointless shite that I dont want or dont need. In fact they have just increased the size of my local supermarket so they can fit more shite in. I dont feel the need to put it in my trolley and neither do I feel the need to buy the Don pack or whatever its called. So I guess Im not bothered its threre really.

New maps and missions would have been very nice but then I havent finished the game yet anyway so I dont really need them either.
  • wattoo #45 5 years ago

But what if supermarkets stopped doing the things you actually wanted and replaced it with the shite.

It's not too bad at the moment but I think we're only at the start of the process. How long before games bought are much shorter/smaller in scope and they expect you to make up the shortfall on the marketplace? That would be fine if the games came down in price, but they won't came down enough (if at all) and you just KNOW Europe will get screwed by the retailers.

And saying "if you don't like it, don't buy it" is no help. I don't buy it, but people do, and sooner or later that will have an effect on me when the whole games model shifts to incorporate downloadable content.
  • lennon #46 5 years ago

If the supermarkets stop doing what I want I go some where else. I know what you are saying and to a certain extent I agree that people will still buy no matter how crap it is.

Its a bit like the themes they are completely pointless but I still buy the odd one or two. Its nice to have the choice.

  • skillian #47 5 years ago

Or £2.99 ringtones for a mobile phone - the "other" big micro-transactions success.

There is no limit to the crap people will buy, even if they're aware just how bad value it is. The trouble is people just think: "it's only a couple of quid, even if it's crap I haven't lost much".

But the seller has gained a shit load of cash, and soon the industry adapts to take advantage.
  • Steroyd #48 5 years ago

Does anyone think that the playstation online system will follow suit?

Sony's open platform is supposed to give a direct link to Publishers and Consumers without Sony beng the middle man dictator. (mentioned at E3)
They even demonstrated being able to open a shop inside the game with that specific theme (like you can buy Motostorm content from inside the motostorm game etc etc) so Sony doesn't have to do a stamp of approval.

So basically.... yes EA can put this shite on PS3, but no Sony isn't going to be the one who dictates if it is or isn't allowed to be put on their marketplace because EA will be independant which is good and bad.

Basically Sony's open platform will take the heat of them if EA spout their bullcrap like this in their games specifically because EA doesn't have to go through Sony to put the stuff on unlike on the Xbox 360 and MS's perpriotry network.
