Godfather downloads on Live
Buy guns, in-game money, etc.
Electronic Arts has released a bunch of guns and other trinkets for The Godfather on Xbox 360, although you'll have to pay for the privilege of using them.
In a move which absolutely won't inspire lots of shouting and complaints we're sure of it, you can pay between 40 and 150 Microsoft points for in-game currency, 100 points each for a range of level-4 weapons, or 800 points for "The Don Collection", which includes five level-4 weapons, lots of in-game money, and various other bits and bobs that can otherwise be bought separately.
There is a freebie, at least, called the MobFace Apparel Bundle, which for a limited time offers you a leather jacket, two hats, and two sets of glasses, allowing you to customise your appearance at an in-game tailor.
You can read all the specific details on Major Nelson's blog.
Seriously, go nuts.

You can now actually spend really money of in-game currency, what a waste!
If anyone actually buys any of this crap they need their head examining
Well i have yet another reason not to buy EA games, oh and if all you other games developers are gonna use this this rip-off strategy, ill boycott all your games too!

Just a fucking thought but wouldn't your efforts be better concentrated on trying to get people to actually buy the GAME in the first place, before starting the fleecing with microcontent? No?
Idiots.

Letting companies run their own servers has proven to be the worst "idea" ever. If XBox 1 did not need EA at the time, things would have been a lot different. I guess that is what you get when EA supported PS2 and forced itself into a position where MS had to allow them access to Live.

I will never, ever start parting with cash for such pish.
Heres a thought EA, instead of fleecing us 'suckers' why not get the voice chat working properly on the 360 version of Battlefield, you know, a game I've ALREADY PAID FOR.

This company needs to bashed into pieces for pulling stuff like this (and if you buy it, then you should be bashed even harder

My simple solution to the whole thing: If you want the extra content, buy it, if you don't, don't. It's only shit when content in retail releases is deliberately held back so that it can be released later at a price, but even then it doesn't bother me much, and there's no evidence of that happening yet really. Price of games on shelves should be lower though.

The Don Collection is £6.80/€9.60.

Hmm, that bothers me lots.

I'm sorry, my point was:
Sure we could boycott them, but the vast majority will always buy trash like this...
Even worse, the new generation of gamers will assume that this is 'normal'...
By pissing the hardcore audience off like this you're practically asking hackers to attack XBL...

Why bother trying to get good at any game when you can buy better weaponry, more money etc, etc and make it all the more easier.
Still, its ironic that a game about Gangsters is holding it audience to ransom.

In theory it bothers me but like I said, limited evidence of that actually being the case. Not only that, but it's not like it's an epidemic in the industry at the mo', and it's not like broken games with half the content they should have are shipping to stores (with the possible exception of PES6 on 360 ;_
What I do wish though is that the designers who are in charge of implementing these micro-transaction things tried to think about it from a gamers point of view. They used to be gamers once, they should ask themselves if they ever would have stood for this shit? Now I don't really mind because it's a choice thing and I just choose not to take advantage of it even though all 360 developers are well within their rights to offer the microtransactions. If they thought it through though, then maybe they could think of doing it in a way that gives your typical gamer greater incentive to take advantage of it, make the extra stuff you're buying worthwhile, make them WANT to buy it. Like I said though, if it's not, just don't buy it, simple as that.

OK, so I can't guarantee it, but it seems to me that the industry is undoubtedly going in that direction. People like us who are bitching about it now will be left standing there like King Canute.

How about more actual content, new missions, a new district, or something tangiable that adds to the game?
Bizarre.

I'm pretty sure this is what we all envisaged when the idea of DLable content was first being put around.
It actually seemed like a cool idea back then...

Seriously - like Penny Arcade said, if Ubi get bought out by EA, gawd 'elp us all as gamers...
We'll all be rocking in our chairs in 5 years time recalling the heady days when you bought a game in a box and the game was actually in there.

Can`t wait until shooters simply allow you to buy a slot on the hi-score able, sure saves all that time learning and playing the game!

I am quite a Microsoft fan (both 360 and PC related stuff) but I really think that Microsoft should consider taking actions against this. The marketplace is a great idea as long as it enhances the game. But being able to buy things to help you beat the game is as lame as buying gold in World of Warcraft.
I am really starting to seriously think to never ever buy something from EA again. Luckily that will not be that hard. I am only really interested in Battlefield anyway, but I passed on BF2142 and if EA mangles too much with the next Battlefield after buying DiCE I guess it will be just as bad as every other EA title around this time. Screw the useless sports games and Need for Speed.
I am all for Ubisoft now. Thinking about it, I really should play Sands of Time again. Boy was that fun.

Indeed, kinda mangled the metaphor there. Oh well, I nearly spelled it Kanoute, till I figured he wasn't an Hammers player.

However, there is still hope - Nintendo might be the knight in shining armor with their Wii. I sure hope so, or else I am out of the console-buying business.

If you pay for this stuff you're sending a dangerous message to developers that they can milk us to hell and back and we'll take it lying down. Don't buy it, and don't buy no more EA games. Boycott market place, boycott EA and anyone else who tries to take the piss out of us. It's the only way to save gaming as we know it. SPREAD THE WORD
FUCK EA and micro transactions. they are killing our games.

New maps and missions would have been very nice but then I havent finished the game yet anyway so I dont really need them either.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
It's not too bad at the moment but I think we're only at the start of the process. How long before games bought are much shorter/smaller in scope and they expect you to make up the shortfall on the marketplace? That would be fine if the games came down in price, but they won't came down enough (if at all) and you just KNOW Europe will get screwed by the retailers.
And saying "if you don't like it, don't buy it" is no help. I don't buy it, but people do, and sooner or later that will have an effect on me when the whole games model shifts to incorporate downloadable content.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Its a bit like the themes they are completely pointless but I still buy the odd one or two. Its nice to have the choice.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
There is no limit to the crap people will buy, even if they're aware just how bad value it is. The trouble is people just think: "it's only a couple of quid, even if it's crap I haven't lost much".
But the seller has gained a shit load of cash, and soon the industry adapts to take advantage.

Sony's open platform is supposed to give a direct link to Publishers and Consumers without Sony beng the middle man dictator. (mentioned at E3)
They even demonstrated being able to open a shop inside the game with that specific theme (like you can buy Motostorm content from inside the motostorm game etc etc) so Sony doesn't have to do a stamp of approval.
So basically.... yes EA can put this shite on PS3, but no Sony isn't going to be the one who dictates if it is or isn't allowed to be put on their marketplace because EA will be independant which is good and bad.
Basically Sony's open platform will take the heat of them if EA spout their bullcrap like this in their games specifically because EA doesn't have to go through Sony to put the stuff on unlike on the Xbox 360 and MS's perpriotry network.
