Godfather sequels on the way? News

PC PlayStation 2 Xbox PSP Xbox 360
News by Ellie Gibson

24 February, 2006

EA's videogame adaptation of The Godfather may not even be on the shelves yet, but the publishing giant is already planning to develop titles based on the second and third instalments in the movie series.

That's according to executive producer David DeMartini, who told BBC News: "We went into this venture taking into consideration the establishment of a brand new franchise. Our intention is to make two and three."

DeMartini said that around 75 per cent of the game is based on the film, while 15 per cent has been inspired by Mario Puzo's novel. As for the remaining 10 per cent, well, they just made it up: "We wanted to create an intense gaming experience, exclusive of the license.

"We wanted to make a category leader that would give significant competition to the GTA game and basically would provide a very formidable alternative," DeMartini went on.

"We found a tremendous number of things that they were doing well that we tried to match. And then some very specific opportunities for innovation and enhancements that should establish us as the leader in those areas."

The Godfather is out on PC, PS2 and Xbox on March 24th, with Xbox 360 and PSP versions to follow.

And after that; Godfather 4, Godfather Xtreme, War of Godfather, Godfather Chronicels, Godfather Mobile and then "We're bringing the franchise back to it's roots in Godfather 5, and here's the amazing twist: it's actaully a prequal".

Do we get to gun Sophia Coppola down on some steps? That would be a game in itself.

Not in an industry where every other game is selling itself as a "GTA-clone". The phrasing alone implies it'll be inferior to the title its aping.

So they're at least being honest that they are just ripping GTA. It still makes me :( though. Let's look at what sells best and just rip that style! True Crime ahoy!

This is what I hate about EA.

Well duh, its EA after all. Expect Godfather takedown, Godfather revenge, Godfather underground, Godfather p00, etc.

"I can see this one getting a 5 or 6/10 on EG."

Seriously doubt that.

/is off to watch some EG tv... ^_^

Would it be worth skipping the first one and waiting for the second with updated player stats and a reworked frontend?

Judging from the gameplay snippets off Eurogamer and various screenshots of this game... it looks shit. It does make me sad that they are doing sequels, but it was always to be expected.

EA in sequel-making shocker!
it shows how well EA knows the market, idiots will buy anything because of the name it has, they know this will sell well and they know the sequels will sell well

why cant they emulate the fact that GTA was innovative, instead of just ripping it off
oh yeah, lazy cashcow...hmm

Agreed. If you want a game that feels like The Godfather and NAILS that mafia atmosphere, play Mafia instead. Released in 2002, sadly no one ever played it, but it's brilliant.

I played it. It wasn't brilliant. It was dull, full of bugs and quickly binned.
