Mortal Kombat on Live Arcade News

Xbox 360 News by Tom Bramwell

23 October, 2006

Midway's Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 has shown up on Xbox Live Arcade over the weekend, giving you the chance to hook up with your friends and then rip their spinal chords out for kicks (or spasms).

Featuring 22 fighters, the usual array of leaderboards and achievements, and a new Challenger Versus Mode, which allows you and three friends to play a "winner-stays-on" style tournament, UMK3 costs 800 Microsoft points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.30).

Obviously there's a trial version available too, as with all Live Arcade games, and we'll be bringing you a review just as soon as we can prise out beat-'em-up loving correspondents away from Tekken: Dark Resurrection for long enough.

Too bad Mortal Kombat really sucks. I never liked that game.

Can we have SWOS and Castlevania early instead?

That said, UMK was rather good actually. I found it better than Street Fighter 2. Not sure if I'll buy it, but it was still good fun.

I have this on a Midways Classic collection along with 21 other games. I paid £14.99 for the whole lot. So £6.80 fo this alone? Hmmm....

I'd have to agree, I'd like some original titles now... of all the retro titles they've released I've only bought doom... SF and MK were slightly tempting... but the rest have held no interest for me... I think the only only other retro game I'm after will be SWOS ...

Not much good. Really. Apart from the usual control pad issues with these ports, things really look bad. Whereas older games look retro in a simplistic good way, these 90's games just look like they were trying to hard and are now just nostalgic curiosities rather than gameplay addled joys.

As an old gamer, and as much as I used to moan about the state of games these days - this really puts things in perspective. I'll take Dead Rising and RR6 (yes, even the flawed but brilliantly fun RR6) over this. Certainly not worth any money except to hardcore fans of MK who must own it.

Someone put me out of my misery and tell me if this is Mega-Drive era or early PS1 era? I had the first one back on the Mega Drive and then totally lost interest in the series.

Good conversion, perhaps a little expensive at 800 points though and the Xbox 360's D-pad is far from ideal for this kind of game.

I wish Microsoft would add a Scanlines option for us HD LCD TV users though to simulate how the games used to look as it tends to make them look better as I've found out with PC emulators.

Scanlines option would be nice indeed! Oldschool stuff like UMK3 looks way better with scanlines.

I always thought Mortal Kombat was cheap, crap and American, but still bought it thinking that it would be a laugh playing online. I didn't try the demo because I assumed I knew what I was getting. Unfortunately you can't remap the buttons, which makes it pretty useless with my joystick.

I want my money back.

I would have preferred if they used the Ninja Skins from MK2 as opposed to the horrible stances/outfits worn by them in UMK3.

Classic Sub Zero looks like a gimp in it.

Appears to be a faithful port/emulator complete with the wonky AI. The 360 controller is very poor at these fighting games with its horrible d-pad. Anyway this
will be the only arcade game I will get 200 Gamerscore in.

Still one of the worst fighting games EVER imho. The only way they could go one worse would be to re-release Pit Fighter for XBLA.
