Depp to star in Pirates game

Heeere's Johnny.

Stupidly famous movie star Johnny Depp is to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow for the forthcoming Pirates of the Caribbean game.

Yes, Depp will be providing a voiceover for PotC: The Legend of Jack Sparrow, which sees you hacking and slashing your way through all manner of piratical environments. You can play as the title character or as Will Turner, and the storyline is based around that of the original film.

The game's executive producer, Todd Vaughn, said he's "thrilled" that Depp's lending his voice to the game, adding: "We couldn’t imagine a better way to capture the spirit of the character than to have Depp lend his voice to Captain Jack Sparrow. It truly adds to an already rich gameplay experience."

"Doing voiceovers great fun, and a lot easier than stumbling about pretending to be Keith Richards or having scissors glued to your fingers all day," Depp did not add.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow is out on PC and PS2 next month.

Friday joke: why are pirates called pirates?

Because they ARRRRRRR.

But is the game any good?

Jack Sparrow is probably one of my favourite characters from a film ever. I wish I was as cool as him!

The first Pirates of the Caribbean on the Xbox was possibly the most underrated game ever, (being Sea Dogs 2 re-badged). Just because of an occasional (and easily rectified) glitch with saving, it got drubbed. Yet it had some of the finest graphics by far and away ever achieved for that system (the ocean has never been modelled that well on a console, and each city was superbly detailed), and rich and deep RPG and naval simulation gameplay.

The new one will be predictably dumbed down and bear no relation to Akella's fine work on the first one.

Happily, Gamespy has a recent and of good quality (May 13th) preview of a near-done version of the game.
    Here's the summary:

The surprisingly fun Disney movies have inspired a surprisingly decent swashbuckler.
Spiffy - Solid arcade action; voiceovers by Johnny Depp; generally well-executed. Iffy - Nothing too innovative or hardcore.

It's a shame there's not more info out there because looking at the (PS2_version)_screens it seems to be worth a look. (the game's out Jul 7th, according to GAME, published by Ubi locally.) But I suppose as the launch date nears, EG will offer some sagely advice on its brilliance or otherwise. :)

    "Nothing too innovative or hardcore."

What the fuck is that supposed to mean? Can anyone out there define 'hardcore' for me please?

Can I just say Ellie Gibson is the best contributor this site's ever had. I heartily endorse the quality and humour of her written word.
