Castlevania man on PS3, X360
And co-op for DS Portrait of Ruin.
Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi says his initial reaction to Sony's PlayStation 3 announcements at E3 was, "Mmm, maybe it's too expensive."
In an interview with GameInformer, Igarashi also shares his views on Microsoft.
"I'm not really negative over Microsoft, but for some reason they tend to back off a little when it comes to something really foreign," he observed.
"But if Japanese developers would say they're working on Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest or Metal Gear maybe, then I guess Japanese consumers would take it seriously and consider purchasing it."
Of more interest to Castlevania fans will be Igarashi's revelation that Portrait of Ruin, the next instalment in the DS series following the excellent Dawn of Sorrow, could feature unlockable co-op missions playable over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.
"It's not confirmed yet because I haven't started work on it," he joked about co-op. "That's why I can’t confirm. But actually I'm thinking about preparing a special unlockable stage where you can do co-op over Wi-Fi."
"Technically speaking, I think we are able to do something like co-op, yes," he added.
Elsewhere in the interview, Igarashi said he felt that the stylus elements of Dawn of Sorrow ended up a bit uncomfortable - the idea was to draw a rune on the screen at the conclusion of a boss battle, and the developer admitted that, having played using his thumb, the screen "got really messed up".
He's happy, he says, simply to use the two screens to display the map and items and so forth. Portrait of Ruin will probably maintain this approach - and will of course adhere to the series' love of collectibles, although this time it'll be skills and items rather than souls.
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, announced just prior to E3, sees players take control of vampire hunter Jonathan Morris and a young girl with magical abilities called Charlotte Orlean, on a quest to stop some eejits rebuilding Dracula's Castle.
It's set during World War II, oddly, at a time when thousands of lost souls are wandering the earth "in search of salvation".
Portrait of Ruin's due out this November.

Good to see he's not drooling over the stylus, either. Only use it when necessary!

Essentially, unless Sony do more than drop the ball - throw it over a cliff maybe - Microsoft is going to struggle to break into the market. Then again things may change when games like Blue Dragon start appearing.

Just yesterday, I tried to write an email to Konami, but I couldn't find anyplace to send it. After looking all over Konami's website, I decided to call the Konami Corporation to let them know what my friends and I are thinking; we wanted to let Konami know what games we wanted to see on the Xbox 360. I was told by the Konami Corporation that for legal reasons, Konami doesn't accept any information like that in American; they said I would need to contact Microsoft or possibly call Konami in Japan, but they didn't have information like that to give to me. Plus, I do not possess the ability to speak or write Japanese. When I tried to tell Microsoft this information, they told me to call Konami again...obviously, I was being given the run-around-in-circles. So, this is a perfect situation on this website, because if anyone from Microsoft is reading this, then you can see the email that my friends and I decided to write to Konami. Here is that letter:
Dear Konami,
I speak for a group of 14 people who asked me to write an email and send it to Konami. We really would like to see Konami give 100% support to the Xbox 360 videogame system from Microsoft. Here is a list of games that Konami is known for that we would love to see appear on the Xbox 360 videogame system:
• Castlevania
• Contra
• Metal Gear Solid
• Silent Hill
• Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
My friends and I know that the Xbox 360 game system is capable of performing amazing graphics in both 2D and 3D games. We think it would be really nice if Konami created both a 2D and a 3D Castlevania game for the Xbox 360. We would also like to see Konami release older versions of Castlevania games previously released for other game systems appear on the Xbox Live Arcade in a remixed and improved format with improved graphics and sound so we can download them and play them on our Xbox 360. For example, it would be nice to be able to play the Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, NES, Playstation, and Sega Saturn versions of Castlevania games appear on the Xbox Live Arcade. It would really be nice if the older games, like the 8-bit and 16 bit ones, were improved with remixed graphics and sound. Seeing those games with a larger color palette, higher resolution, more sprites, voices, and 5.1 sound would be amazingly fun!
Contra is another series that we would like to see appear on the Xbox 360, just like Castlevania. We have read that Contra and Super Contra are going to be released for the Xbox Live Arcade, and we are very happy about this; we wish that Konami would do the same with Castlevania. My friends and I would also like to inform Konami that we have a very strong desire to see both a new 3D Contra game released for the Xbox 360 and a new 2D Contra game released for the Xbox 360. We realize that 3D games are what people seem to be into nowadays, so maybe Konami could just start out designing a 3D Contra game and a 3D Castlevania game, and then release the 2D games on the Xbox Live Arcade.
My friends and I would also really like to see a new Metal Gear Solid game released for the Xbox 360. We think it is a shame that the only Metal Gear Solid game we see for a new system is Metal Gear Solid 4 for the Playstation 3. All 14 of us have decided that we are absolutely not going to purchase the Playstation 3 videogame system, because it costs too much money and delivers too little performance value: There is virtually no difference in quality between Xbox 360 games and Playstation 3 games. In fact, several games appearing on both systems shown at the Electronic Entertainment Expo revealed that the Xbox 360 version offers superior performance in graphics and sound. Some of the games I am referring to are: John Madden Football 2007, Fight Night Round 3, Sonic the Hedgehog, The Darkness, and NCAA Football 2007.
My friends and I have read gaming magazine interviews with Konami programmers working on Metal Gear Solid 4, and each programmer has said that Metal Gear Solid 4 could be programmed for the Xbox 360 without losing any quality. We read in one interview where a programmer said that the reason Metal Gear Solid 4 is not currently being developed for the Xbox 360 is because he personally feels that the Metal Gear Solid franchise is something that is only associated with the Playstation system. Well, that is nonsense because there has already been a Metal Gear Solid game on the original Xbox. Plus, a programmer should not be making major business decisions like that; a programmer’s job is to carry out the decisions that businessmen and businesswomen make. If there were technical reasons why Metal Gear Solid could not be released on the Xbox 360, then that would be a valid reason not to release the game; however, the programmers agree that Xbox 360 could easily get Metal Gear Solid 4 to operate on the Xbox 360 hardware.
My friends and I would like to see Metal Gear Solid 4 released for the Xbox 360 at the same point in time that it is released for the Playstation 3. If it is not possible to release Metal Gear Solid 4 on the Xbox 360 at the same time as the Playstation 3 version, then we would like to see improvements made to the Xbox 360 version when it is eventually released. We would like to see new stages, levels, maps, weapons, and stories added to the game that take special advantage of the Xbox 360 hardware.
My friends and I would also like to see a completely new version of Metal Gear Solid released for the Xbox 360. Metal Gear Solid 2 has appeared on the original Xbox, but Metal Gear Solid 3 didn’t. We think it would be nice to see a completely new version of Metal Gear Solid for the Xbox 360 gaming system, not necessarily just a port of an already existing Metal Gear Solid game. Actually, we would like to see both Metal Gear Solid 4 and a completely new form of Metal Gear Solid game on the Xbox 360. Designing a game from the ground up for the Xbox 360 would allow Konami developers the chance to take advantage of the Xbox 360 hardware in special ways, just like they are with Metal Gear Solid 4 for the Playstation 3. Please, consider releasing Metal Gear Solid in some form for the Xbox 360; my friends and I would really love to see Metal Gear Solid on the Xbox 360, especially if it took advantage of Xbox Live.
My friends and I would also love to see a new version of Silent Hill released for the Xbox 360. Designing a new Silent Hill game to take advantage of the high-definition 3D capabilities of the Xbox 360 would be amazing. We would definitely purchase Silent Hill if it were released for the Xbox 360, just like we would purchase Metal Gear Solid for the Xbox 360, and all of the other games I mentioned.
One other request that my friends and I have for Konami relates to an arcade game that Konami released in the early 1990’s called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This game was a four-player arcade game, and it was very fun to play. My friends and I would really love to see Konami release this game for the Xbox Live Arcade. It would be incredibly fun to be able to play that game on my Xbox 360 with a total of four of my friends in my living room; it would be just like we were at the arcade. We would also like to see the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle game allow four-player compatibility via the Xbox Live Arcade; that way we can play with multiple players online, even if we don’t have four people in our house at the time. All of us would want to purchase the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle four-player arcade game.
Thank you for listening to what my friends and I have to say,
Sincerely,
Michael Zoran
