Thieves Den for Oblivion

More content.

Finished Elder Scrolls Oblivion? Not any more you haven't! Because Bethesda's just released some more of its downloadable content.

That's right! More! More from the people who brought you "A Metal Shirt For A Horse That'll Be Two Quid Fifty" and "A Garden With Some Flowers In It".

So, Oblivioners, say hello to "Thieves Den", encouraging you to "Rediscover the legendary Dunbarrow Cove and the ancient pirate ship The Red Sabre" so you can dress up your own little stealthy hovel to hide away in between pickpocketings.

It's got: five upgrades for your lair, "over" 45 new items, 15 new spells, and "free sleeping space", which is surely a bit of a misnomer at this point, along with the potential to have new pirates come along and join your crew to supplement your income. It's the downloadable content pack that pays for itself! Get your friends to invest today!

All you have to do to get it is go to the Obliviondownloads.com website if you're a PC player or log in to Xbox Live Marketplace if you favour the 360 version. Both cost about $1.89.

Also, I doubt the pirates will sound like real pirates :-(

The pirates in the Imperial City sure didn't.

Stupid Bethesda, charging for things that were free before the advent of Live. Yeah, thanks a lot for setting such a beautiful precedent Microsoft.
  • groovychainsaw #5 6 years ago

To be fair, this actually looks like some decent content - and for £1.20, i want to play like the goonies and take over a pirate ship in a cave. And create my own crew... yarrrr

It's work like any other, why should it be free?
    It does sound quite comprehensive.
And to sore PC gamers who will enevitably blame the 360 for everything I say this: Microsoft were exploiting you way before they were us, and if you thought content distributed by the developer for their game was going any other way than "pay per view" then you must be niave.

EDIT: I guess you guys prefer it when you got those really cool "free" patches for games that were basically unfinished when released. Hey they were free, so must have been good value for money!

"over" 45 new items = 46 new items.
  • Genji #10 6 years ago

Yes. I would much rather download something that stops my Oblivion from crashing so much. Also, something making the framerate a little smoother.

And I'm not going to pay for it. I'm sure I won't have to.

    Swashbuckle, even.

Genji, did you try this solution?

"Some users may experience frequent crashing due to an older system file. These crashes may be attributed to the 'mpeg2dmx.ax' [should be in the Windows\System32 folder IIRC] file. Simply renaming the file to 'mpeg2dmx.ax.old' may correct this issue."

I know it worked for me, ie. instead of crashing every 10 minutes Oblivion now crashes every 60-90 minutes. Result!

    People are still playing Oblivion?
  • smoison #15 6 years ago

For the PC Users, If you know what Bit torrent is you can TRY this add-on and see if you think its worth the money....

auleyc I will show my bro this fix, if it works he will be very happy.

I thought the Frost Crag (or whatever) extra veered too much towards 'buy yourself an easy herb garden, library and enchanting kit' rather than add much gameplay. The Orrery was a basic fetch quest (although the Orrery itself is rather pretty) and, having used up my spare 300 microsoft points, will not seek to indulge any more.

    /casts ease of game + 5, petty cash - £1.20
  • Bitkari #17 6 years ago

just spend a bit of time making a proper expansion and we'll buy it.

    please.
  • OnlyMe #18 6 years ago

    Pirates!

    PIRATES PIRATES PIRATES!

God, I love pirates... I'll probably be getting this. And it will be the first thing I ever bought off of marketplace.

Are there ppl who arnt? -_-
  • kangarootoo #20 6 years ago

This (from the content list anyway) sounds like better value than the previous add-ons (I bought the herb garden one, wish I hadn't, but it WAS less than the cost of fish and chips so I'll live).

As for the old "its a rip off, why can't I have stuff for free" line that is getting wheeled out yet again.

    You.
    Don't.
    Have.
    To.
    Buy.

  • Jonathan_Fakenham #21 6 years ago

    I would if I could.
This one sounds more interesting than the last few ones, too.
  • smelly #22 6 years ago

I wish they spent more time on the patch than on these extras..
  • kangarootoo #23 6 years ago

    @smelly

I'm not sure they affect each other. Add-ons like this will have always been part of the busines model. I doubts it is so simple as just changing the task list of a couple of coders. The add-ons MAY even not be produced in-house (but that is pure supposition on my part).

If they are working on a patch (which I assume they are) it probably has a seperate schedule all of its own. If they stopped releasing add-ons, the patch dev would likely be unaffected,

for those of you who are after a patch - get an xbox 360 ;-).
I'm a convert, it must be said, I used to be an avid PC gamer, but don't touch it now after getting a new game last week, it actually took me 1 1/2 HOURS before I could play it!! Installing, getting patches, registering to use it online etc.etc. Can't be bothered with that now. Got oblivion on 360, would have cost me the price of an xbox 360 to upgrade my pc to make it look that good, and have had no crashes whatsoever.
  • smoison #26 6 years ago

But then you HAVE to pay to update it, and you can't get the little MOD's that are being released.

I.E MOD that picks up all vegitation around you automatically.
Or MOD that makes your inventory look NORMAL (smaller items), and not have each item be HUGE because this is made for consols...

But I can understand why upgrading may not be worth it, if Oblivion is the only new game you want to play.
  • tengu #27 6 years ago

    "Are there ppl who arnt?"

Me. It got a bit too boring(And more than a touch annoying) by the time I hit the 60 hour mark. Doubt I'll bother playing again tbh.

    Cool!!!

"EDIT: I guess you guys prefer it when you got those really cool "free" patches for games that were basically unfinished when released. Hey they were free, so must have been good value for money! "

That's the point really, there are still enough bugs/errors in the PC version of Oblivion so that most of these downloads are simply horrendous to behold at this time. It apparently doesn't take long to create extra non-free content than to finish the game in a proper way. And pls, the 'only PC games are unfinished'-comment really gets old. Guess you missed console Driv3r and Xbox360 Quake 4.

But heck, at least Beth is somewhat improving the value of these packs just like Bioware did with their Premium modules for NWN. Only with Bio though, before they did that, they provided more than enough free content and made sure the game was nearly bug-free.
  • Svecke #30 6 years ago

Got it and is enjoying it. :) Shiver me timbers!

Nebularhaze, simple way to make your life easier would be to create a hotmail account based in the US and then create a free Xbox Live Silver account tied to that hotmail account. Bingo, access to 99% of all the content except that stuff which isn't available in the US.
  • the_dudefather #32 6 years ago

i havent had much time to mess about in my new piraty abode but it looks pretty cool so far, plus ITS GOT PIRATES!!!!!omgLOL!

it should add a new response to the dialog when the imperial guards catch you

    -serve jail time
    -pay fine
    -resist arrest
-you fight like a milk maid!
  • Dire #33 6 years ago

you mean "you fight like a cow!"
  • tridentz_83 #34 6 years ago

Why let Bethseda milk us and pay for these overpriced official mods (Horse armour!?!) when you can get the user-made ones that really improve the game, ie, those that spruce up the ugly mesh of 'far away' textures, improve the convoluted inventory system, bigger/colourful maps, a more beautiful night sky, better water reflections et al, all with little if no hogging of system resources?!?

For those who claim that PC users are sore... i am so glad i did not purchase the Xbox version... all the 360 owners are sorely (pun unintended) missing out on the bevy of mods and visual enhancements on offer for the PC version. I cant look at the original screenshots (without visual mods) without wincing now.

    See for yourself htt p://www.gamespot.com/features/6148788/p-5.html
  • #35 6 years ago

I'd rather spend my time actually playing the game over endlessly tinkering with it to make it suit me better, so no, I'm not sore with my £280 purchase over the equivalent rig layout neded to run Oblivion on the PC.

Finally something for us Tea Leafs...I'll be buying this one.
  • the_dudefather #38 6 years ago

    @ Dire

if i remember right, the initial line is "you fight like a milkmaid", with the witty retort of "how appropriate, you fight like a cow"
  • tridentz_83 #39 6 years ago

    @jamesphilp

Lol, i wouldnt call spending an hour tops on adding mods 'endlessly tinkering' =)

And, whats the point of getting a next-gen console anyway, isnt it to experience the better visuals/graphics... The visual improvement with mods is staggering to say the least.

I have a 360 too just so you know im not slagging xbox owners, but if you have to get one, get the PC for the mods.
