Loken on BloodRayne film issues News

PC PlayStation 2 Xbox
News by Tom Bramwell

23 March, 2006

Kristanna Loken has commented on Uwe Boll's game-based film BloodRayne, which did quite badly upon its theatrical release - and drew plenty of derision after a whole bunch of cinemas declined to run it despite being sent film reels.

"That was really sad, because you put over a year of your life into a project, and you think it's going to do something," she told SCI FI Wire. "I think we really did get cheated in that sense," she said of the distribution issues.

Boll said much the same when we interviewed him recently - complaining, "We were scheduled to go out on 2000 screens, and then we came out on 930 screens, and only sh**** screens, so it didn't work out." But he and Loken might be buoyed by DVD sales, which Boll reckons will be good - based on sales of his previous films on DVD.

As to the quality of the film and its director, Loken wasn't prepared to have a pop. "I know that Uwe does not have a great track record, to say the least. Hey, I'm going to be objective. It's not going to win any awards, but I thought for what it was it was a pretty decent film," she told SCI FI Wire.

Fresh from her starring role in BloodRayne, Kristanna Loken's hopped into bed (work-wise) with director Uwe Boll again to take up a supporting role for In The Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale, which is due out later this year.

I feel for her (and she certainly voices her thoughts in a more restrained manner than Bolle).

It must be hard to really get involved in something that has potential profile and success, to then find it doesn't really get into the public eye the way you thought it might. Even if the film isn't that hot in the end, its nice as an actor to get some exposure I'm sure.

I thought the exposure of her (body) was the ONLY good thing about the movie anyway?

Why do they keep making films of games, there are only a handfull of games that would actually suit this and none of them have been done yet. Only games that put a lot of time into the plot should ever be made into a film, MGS or possibly Half life would suit this kind of transition.

From what I heard, the film lives up to Uwe's usual standard of shite. If Kristanna Loken had done her research, she'd have known that Uwe Boll was known for crap films. And probably figured as much that all this was gonna happen.

Pretty enough lady, but no sympathy for her. She's only got herself to blame for this one.

dsmx - there's loads of games that would suit films. Resident Evil being just one example (would make a cracking horror action film), if only it could be done well. Yes, there are some that really shouldn't be filmed (Super Mario for example... why??!), but of the ones that would work, they tend not to due to bad scripting, characterisation and direction. Having said that, I quite liked the first Resi film in a schlocky kind of way.

@Stickman and Kami

You heartless buggers ;)

Kami, "She's only got herself to blame for this one"

Really? Its not like she is single handedly responsible for the film being crap is it?

I'm sure any actor is going to be disappointed if a film they worked in doesn't perform as hoped. Its no more complex than that really. The film bombed, she's disappointed. Fair enough I say.

Come on K2. She's diappointed that she feels like she's wasted a year - she DOES only have herself to blame. It honestly wouldn't have taken much for her to look up the directors past attempts and tell herself, "Oh. Umm... right. This is going to bomb."

It makes me laugh. Kristanna just needs to pick herself up and move onto the next project and next director. But seems she's sticking with Boll for the time being, so hope she's ready for a second chronic disappointment...

One final edit... at least she gets PAID for that wasted year, and probably paid more than most people. Whinge whinge I'm so disappointed... yeah, we feel for you Loken. NOT!

I can understand her being disappointed, sure, but like Kami says, surely her spidey-sense must have been tingling on this one? Movie/game tie-in (also worth pointing out that it was a second-rate game to start with!); Uwe Boll directing; poor distibutor; poor production company.

She should have just left it to Paris Hilton.

I take your points. I would say that paying the bills is important for an actor, same as it is for us.

Its a common assumption in general public circles that actors should turn down low quality work on principal, but the truth is that getting whatever work you can helps you stay alfoat in what is a very unstable career.

I see it this way. She took a job, it took a year of her life, the result bombed, she is disappointed. She's not saying thats our fdault, she just saying she feels disappointed.

I bow out at this point. I'm not her defender in shining armour. I just know from others how tough an industry film making can be for actors that aren't A list, so I defend the underdog. Thats all.

Aren't people making something out of nothing here? The way i read it is that someone asked her if she felt dissapointed, and she said yes. That's not really moaning.

The other day I downloaded (legally as it's now out of copyright) 'Plan 9 from outer space' because it was voted worst film of all time.

I have to say that I thought 'the balir witch project' just edged it but then after watching bloodrayne it trounces them both into oblivion.

BR is EASILY the worst film ever made lol :)

I just saw the film. The production values were good and the cast were pleasing to they eye (note Loken and that girl from Res Evil - damn she hot).
So what was the weak link? The directing. Half the time you could make head or tail of who was where or what was happening and you sure as hell couldn't understand the motivations of the 2d characters.
Sad to say, Loken-booby scene was probably the best thing about the film, it comes out of nowhere and could have just as easily been a random dvd extra/deleted scene as it has no impact on the story.
Blair Witch 2 still has this topped for worst film, but this does rank high in the bad-directing stakes.

Loken deserves better roles. I've liked her since Mortal Kombat Conquest. It not that I'm a fan, but I wouldn't complain if I saw more of her ;)
