WoW expansion on way

Blizzard says so and everything.

World of Warcraft developer Blizzard has confirmed that a new expansion for the PC MMORPG is currently in development - but it's keeping the details under wraps for the time being.

"Some have asked about an expansion and what it might hold," lead producer Shane Dabiri writes in a post on the WoW website.

"I wanted to let players know that it is in the works, and we’ll release details as soon as we can."

Dabiri's comments confirm similar statements made by Blizzard bigwig Paul Sams in an interview with our sister site, GamesIndustry.biz, earlier this month.

Sams said Blizzard was "most certainly" planning to develop paid expansion content, stating: "I think that all of us would be naïve to think that we wouldn't do that... When we announce it and what it will be is something that we'll figure out in the near-term future."

We'll bring you more news on just what Blizzard is keeping up its wizard's sleeve as soon as we get it.

I'm guessing it'll be largely aimed at level 60 folks and offer a higher level cap. If they do have a higher level cap, then won't that affect the current end game content?

i thought they wouldnt bother changing the lvl cap, as you said it would affect end game content too much.

As for my thoughts on what the expansion will hold, a few possibilities come to mind.... Outland where Illidan and the Blood Elves are might be included or maybe Northrend where Arthas is.

Never played it, but I've heard that "it's crap once your character has reached level 40".

Discuss in relation to Fig 1.B

Still playing here, and I've been 60 for a bit

Im 60 too, not played it much, but i like that its become more of a hobby i do on the weekends etc then somthing i feel compelled to play all evening even if i dont want to, which is just perfect for me i like level 60 and not being obligied to keep leveling to keep up with my friends.

I was speaking with a GM about the x-pack and all he'd say was: "Ever wondered why you can't access most of Sithilus?" and some other stuff that i cant remember off the top of my head.

Apparently theres gonna be some world events coming up soon too the second of which is gonna involve that mysterious force field dome over the ruins of Dalaran.

    cool.

The end-game discussion is rather pointless. If they raise the cap, they will introduce new challenges for those levels.. people will in time move on to this new end game content instead of raiding easier dungeons all the time.

You might as well say that the level 20 dungeons are imbalanced since a level 60 can solo it easily.

I'd guess it's going to be an island / continent, which would more likely be Northrend. The level 60 raid instances are basically "fire" locations, so an "ice" location would be a good change. There are many areas that are currently blocked on the map but I believe most of those are going to be released as monthly updates.

I expect they'll raise the level cap in some way, like the AA points in EQ or perhaps Hero classes will be part of the expansion. Trouble is Blizzard have been hit hard by staff departures: the whole WoW animation team and the lead artist left for NCSoft because of the working conditions. Vivendi is sucking up the dollars so no matter how successful WoW becomes it won't have the development effort the subscriber numbers would lead you to believe.

I hope they up the level cap. I'm currently at level 38, but I want to go beyond 60, I want more spells that are available, I want more talent points to distribute.
