No ICO sequel this year

Sony gives the lie to an Amazon listing for NICO, but urges you to watch this space. (We should put that on our business cards, really.)

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has no plans to launch a sequel to ICO this year, the company confirmed today, but hasn't ruled out a sequel to the cult PS2 title entirely.

Reacting to an Amazon.co.uk listing for NICO - believed to be the name of the sequel - and an alleged November 29th release date, a spokesperson for Sony told Eurogamer, "SCEE has yet to announce any official information related to the sequel of ICO, but we can confirm that such game will not be launching in 2004 for Europe."

However there is glimmer of hope for fans of Ico and Yorda's celebrated PS2 adventure. "ICO has been a cherished favourite amongst PS2 gamers and we realise that a second instalment is eagerly anticipated worldwide," we were told. "Please watch this space..."

Couldn't have put it better ourselves.

Was ICO a big success in Japan as well? I can't remember, but it doesn't seem like the kind of game that particular audience goes for. Ah well, I'll be sitting tight for the sequel in any case.

Let's just hope they don't do a Katamari Damacy with it if it DOES ever come to fruition. I seriously think (whatever the law as far as Sony sees it is) that Nico (or Ico 2) would be the one game I got my PS2 chipped for if it wasn't ever going to get a European release.

Why do they have to call it Nico? it makes me think of Ico but with Steven Segall as the main character :-/

Wasn't all the 'Nico' stuff just unconfirmed rumour anyway? They've never announced anything at all - in fact the 'watch this space' thing above is the first time I've ever heard anyone from Sony even remotely contemplate the possibility of a sequel.

But there are screenshots. I've seen them.

There was an ad for recruitment at that developer which had ICO visuals on it. So everyone assumed they were making a sequel. And I do recall a few screenshots floating about maybe, but then maybe I'm thinking about the ad again. "Nico" was registered I believe, but as Blerk says no-one officially announced it.

But it's all academic anyway, because they'd be insane not to make a sequel. The world would vanish in a puff of logic if they didn't.

Ni is also Japanese for "in" and "on".

I don't trust any Amazon release date, I suspect they are often pushed forward to increase pre-order sales as it appears they are getting the title before anyone else. Afterwards they can just claim they got it wrong, oops, sorry!

Good example of this is GT4 Prologue which they said they were getting at least a full week or two before everyone else (no, I didn't fall for it. I'm too cycnical about the games market these days). This was changed the day after their alleged release date. A shame as other than that I quite like shopping with them.

I have a feeling NICO will turn into a PS3 (launch) title. Just as ICO was originally developed for PSX, but then moved over to PS2 late in its development ...

Either way, if it's even a glimmer as beautiful as ICO was, I'm 'avin' it.

I've seen a movie & screenshots of Nico over a year ago and I'm 100% sure it is in development. It's just a matter of when it will be released. I'm assuming this Xmas in Japan and Easter '05 in Europe/U.S.

Hmm it could well be on the PS3 as i'd imagine the PS2 couldn't cope with such a grandiose scale outside the Ico world.

"Is it a Velvet Underground simulator?"

    HA! :)

got beer, care to tell us where you got that info from?

These screenshots have been around for more than an year, possibly pulled off from a company presentation in Japan. The Japanese words seen there are a few names of the same people that did ICO and the style definitely has written ICO all over it.

Personally I'm glad Sony don't rush it and let the developers take the time they need. After all, that's why the first game is so good.

PS3 to be shown at Tokyo game show in September.

As long as it's out in 2005, I'm extremely happy. This might actually be a good time to rummage through ICO for the fourth time.
  • aabyssx #21 8 years ago

Not in this year? So it is really in development (not just the trademark is registered)!
