New Super Mario Bros. dated

In US. Plus: a new puzzle game.

After last week's news that New Super Mario Bros. would be out in Japan this May, we all expected we'd have to wait a bit for its release in the West. Not so, says Nintendo today - NSMB will be out in American shops from May 7th.

Amazingly, NSMB sees the Princess kidnapped by Bowser! And Mario has to rescue her, but here he can also take on super size using giant mushrooms, and the whole game is drawn with impressive 3D models in 2D environments. It'll be the first major new Mario platform game for some time - and the DS's first original one.

Beyond NSMB, Nintendo's also quietly announced a new puzzle game, called Magnetica, which is due out in the US on June 5th. "In Magnetica, marbles roll down a twisted path toward the goal and it's up to players to stop them by launching new marbles into the oncoming ones. The marbles will disappear if players match three or more in this massive marble elimination. All actions are controlled with the stylus in this title that satisfies even the strongest puzzle addiction," says Nintendo's statement.

Sounds interesting - and doubtless we'll see something of it at this year's E3, which runs, ooh, just after NSMB is released. Guess we know where our trip money's going.

Magnetica is Puzzloop. Which a company called Pop Cap deemed to be so fun that they cloned it and sold it on the Internet and Xbox Live under the name: Zuma.

So basically we already know how good it is. Today. :)

    Oh and read this:
    http:/ /www.insertcredit.com/features/hitofude/

"CHZ: I remember that in 2004 you intended to file a lawsuit against Popcap for IP infringement with their game Zuma, a clone of Puzz Loop which can be played on PC and Xbox 360 (via the "Live Arcade" service). I haven't heard anything about this story since then. Was any solution or arrangement reached?

OZA: My lawyers in Japan are supposed to be on this. Progress is slow because if we do court battle in US, we would be at a disadvantage. You know the Americans and their mentality. We will be up against American jurors. You know how biased they are towards Oriental companies. Popcap games' lawyer replied my mail and the one from my lawywers' office. In essence, they don't give a shit. I think they knew what they were doing from the start and they are bad businessmen. You know that to think of a game and to actually make it takes a lot of energy and money. Ripping off someonelse's idea is bad; they don't belong in the game business. In a few months, you will see what I am doing. I am not a lawyer so we will do battle in a different court. Did you know that Popcap also has a ripoff of Puzzle Bubble? "

    Interesting indeed.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

I wouldn't count Yoshi's Island as a proper Mario game myself. Was it even counted as "Mario World 2" in Japan? So basically we haven't had an actual SMB game since Mario World, 15 years ago.

Damn Nintendo and their constant rehashing of IP!

This is great news. I'll probably buy a DS if this game is half decent. I'll buy one right now if the announce Zelda Oot remake for it.
  • earl_roberts #17 6 years ago

Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels doesn't REALLY count though does it? I wouldn't even say Super Mario Bros. 2 does as it was based on another game. What's Return of Mario Bros?
  • the_dudefather #18 6 years ago

now someone count all the mario spin-offs see how the lists stack up

    /cries
  • magicpocket #22 6 years ago

Sorry Frod - i couldnt see a title to your list so i assumed that you had made a list of all the Mario platform games and forgotten to add 64 and Sunshine. However, to assume is to make an ass out of you and me....

"Amazingly, NSMB sees the Princess kidnapped by Bowser!"

    Yawn.
  • Genji #24 6 years ago

"Mario was always about the gameplay and not the storyline."

Really? I always thought Sunshine's story of Koopa Kid painting black tar over a beautiful island with a magic paintbrush is on par with anything in the classical literature.

    Are completely different games.

So people are moaning that PROGRESS has happend and the mario games are no longer 2d and have progressed in style of gameplay?!? But in the same breath moaning that they're using 20 year old ip?!? WTF?

Personally I count the wario games on the gb/gba as "proper" mario platformers as well.

But I dont get why people are moaning nintnedo over use mario, but at the same time they're moaning that he's being used in lots of different styles of games?!?! What would you prefer the same game over and over again?

Geesus. You cant please some people.

"Amazingly, NSMB sees the Princess kidnapped by Bowser!" Yawn

Ever think there's a tongue in cheek element to it? Look at the new princess peach game, where mario gets kidnapped. Pople seem to be getting story and "adult content" confused with gameplay. If I want a story, i'll buy a book, If i want "adult content" I'll download a porno. If I want a fun game, I'll stick with nintendo.

What i dont understand is people backlashing against this before they've played it soley because it is a new 2d platformer of a game character who used to be in 2d platformers.

No-one moaned about the sonic ds 2d platformer game (which, i might add, is almost identical in gameplay to the older sonics!)

"Plus if this didn't have mario and some other character no one would complain. "

The problem is, if it didnt have mario, no-one would notice it at all.

Which is why it's got mario.
