PS3 launch line-up unveiled

21 titles inc. Resistance, Genji, plus e-Dist game details.

Sony has unveiled the line-up for the American PlayStation 3's "launch window", encompassing the 17th November launch date and the vague period immediately following it.

Announced at SCEA's Gamer's Day event in the US on Thursday, the 21-game list is headlined by first-party titles Resistance: Fall of Man and Genji: Days of the Blade, while major third-party titles include Call of Duty 3, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Ridge Racer 7 and Sonic the Hedgehog. First-party titles will retail for US$ 59.99.

Sony also confirmed leaked details of games in development for release through its e-Distribution service, similar to Xbox Live Arcade. Blast Factor, a shoot-'em-up with online options, will be released at launch, while others in development include Go! Sudoku, Go! Swizzleblock2, Criminal Crackdown (from God of War creator David Jaffe), Cash Carnage Chaos and Lemmings 2. First-party e-Distribution games are expected to go for US$ 15.

The platform holder also revealed that a demo of racing title MotorStorm will be available for download on day one, and that the first 500,000 units sold in the US would include a pack-in Blu-ray movie - Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.

The full launch window line-up follows.

"Same same"? as in similar games to 360?
  • attep #2 5 years ago

Well I suppose at least our launch lineup will be better (even if it is 5 months later) - I'd still rather have one now though.
  • Xerx3s #3 5 years ago

Suppose that it's a nice list (lot's of non exclusives though).

Will all games on their XBLa be 15$ or is that a min/max price?

Not too bad. Would be a good launch if even half of the games are half-decent. Resistance looks promising.

That said, Tiger Woods 07 has to be the fugliest launch title - and it is identical to the 360 version to boot. For some reason, the 'next gen' versions look crap even compared to the current gen versions. It is high time someone grabbed EA by the balls and came up with a golf game that actually used a game engine from 2006 and not 1996.

Sixaxis is a horrific name, difficult to pronounce and spell. But then, Sony were never very good with names as well.

By the way, does anyone know whether rumble will work on Dual Shock and the steering wheels, or is it shut out of PS3 for good?
  • 3william56 #5 5 years ago

Solid but not inspiring so far, unless Resistance is something very special.
Nothing to make me scream about the delay yet.
  • penhalion #6 5 years ago

Rumble is currently shut out as in devs have been told it's not guaranteed to exist on any sony produced controllers. This basically means that games will not include it in the near future.

Incidentally, having had a chance to try out the legendary sixaxis, I noticed that I naturally lean into games and this blasted thing means that I tend to also end up crashing. Unless a game is made especially for the tilt mechanism, it really doesn't enhance a game. In fact for me it screwed up my normal way of playing.

Very poor line up, just as bad as the 360. The Wii will be the only console to laucnh with a decent lineup it seems
  • Forebodin #8 5 years ago

I'd say it's better than the Xbox 360 launch (similar development time aside), but the only title I'd purchase is Rainbow Six: Vegas.
  • Zomoniac #9 5 years ago

Sixaxis is a horrific name, difficult to pronounce and spell

But it's palindromic! You only need to spell the first half and then the rest will do itself for you :)
  • Zomoniac #10 5 years ago

A port of Zelda will strange controls, Monkey Ball and some novelty tech demos? The Wii launch looks terrible to me, high profile games are getting knocked back by the second. Mario, Sonic, Wario Ware and Excite Truck were all expected for launch, and I would've bought all them, but they've all been put back.

I'm not sure you've played the current and next gen versions with a statement like that... the 360 version is without a doubt much prettier (with large crowds to boot).
  • groovychainsaw #12 5 years ago

16 out of the 21 are on the 360 anyway, and the exclusives aren't that spectacular. Bit disappointing, really, especially as they are only conifrming 'launch window', which as microsoft showed, is anything up to about 12 months after the console is released....
  • mkreku #13 5 years ago

Resistance looks neat, but other than that? Almost as weak as the Xbox 360 launch list.
  • Steroyd #14 5 years ago

Wow was expecting the official Launch to be riddled with mostly FPS's, Sport and EA.

Much more diverse than MS's launch but other than Resistance doesn't look stellar either.

Now the European launch should be a different kettle of fish. :)
  • optimusprym8 #15 5 years ago

hmm OK CoD3 but the rest, meh, whatever, weakest launch line-up evah
  • BartonFink #16 5 years ago

You would have thought with an extra 9 months they could have come up with something a bit better though. The flippin thing was supposed to launch last March can you imagine if it did. Not a poor launch line up by any means but a little meh! About on a par with the 360 launch lineup i.e. solid but unspectacular.
Think of it this way at least by the time of the launch over here in March there should be something good out

  • AcidSnake #17 5 years ago

    Very bland apart from Resistance...
Which is something a lot of people seem to think...
So that price cut on first gen games remains exclusive to japan?
Or did I convert it wrongly?
  • mkreku #18 5 years ago

The biggest weakness (for me) is probably the lack of decent RPG's. I see Oblivion on that list, but most everyone has played that already, on one platform or another. And then what?

I wish that White Knight thingie had been a launch title, that would have pulled this list up from mediocre to good.
  • Roamer #19 5 years ago

As far as launch line-ups go, this one is okay. More varied than the Xbox360's launch, but as with the 360 I detect a distinct lack of system sellers.
  • Muddtallica #20 5 years ago

Zomoniac - is it really true that WarioWare and Excite Truck have been delayed? If so, that sucks. Last I heard, they were still going to be in the so-called "launch window" (same as this PS3 list), though they're not actually out on day one...and also, to be fair, nobody actually ever claimed Mario and Sonic would be launch titles.

The PS3 line-up isn't spectacular, but it seems decent. There are a few things in there that are interesting to me...the Wii launch edges it for me, because that has, in Zelda, funny controls or no, a must-have title, but both of these launches are better than the 360's was.

The other thing I notice - the free US Blu-Ray movie is Talladega Nights?! Isn't that a bit of a weird choice? The PSP came with Spider-Man 2, an SFX blockbuster that really showcased the UMD medium's quality. PS3, with its futuristic high-def Blu-Ray technology, chooses to showcase its fabulous visuals with...a Will Ferrell comedy?

  • ManicDrunkMonk #21 5 years ago

Not as bad as I thought it was, but still not great.
  • spongebob #22 5 years ago

Solid lineup with at least one possible exclusive hit title (Resistance). I am quite sure that anyone who buys their PS3 in USA will be more than happy with what they have for 2006.
  • Steroyd #23 5 years ago

I wish that White Knight thingie had been a launch title, that would have pulled this list up from mediocre to good.

Are you sure a rushed game from Level 5 would have been that good.
The last thing i want is an overcooked under thought JRPG from those guys.

  • haowan #25 5 years ago

Looks like a great line-up to me.
  • smoison #26 5 years ago

    Talladega Nights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALI G is in there! Posing as a Frenchy!

    P.S Almost forgot,
    F.E.A.R. (Day 1 Studios/Vivendi-Universal Games)
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas (Ubisoft)
    Resistance: Fall of Man (Insomniac/Sony)
    Call of Duty 3 (Treyarch/Activision)

Loads of FPS! Mabye PS3 wants to be FPS King too(just as the PC, Wii, and 360).

I bet FEAR turns out to the best one of the 4...

  • Steroyd #28 5 years ago

So 5 out of 21 is loads of that genre even though there's about 7 Sports titles.
  • Darren #29 5 years ago

It's a pretty weak launch lineup in my opinion if you own an Xbox 360 as it lacks exclusives.

I'm sure Resistance will be great but I couldn't care less for Genji, NBA 07 or Untold Legends. The rest of the games can be played on the 360 so perhaps on reflection it's a good thing that the European PS3 launch was delayed. Maybe by March we'll have Warhawk, Heavenly Sword and other games worth forking out £400 on the machine for?

I'm surprised that Call of Duty 3 is a launch game though, Edge described the game they saw in this month's issue as having a poor framerate and being basically unfinished compared with the slicker looking 360 version. I can't believe they've improved it that much since they wrote that given the launch is less than a month away. :?
  • Xerx3s #30 5 years ago

    So what's this film about?
  • BartonFink #31 5 years ago

@smoison Loads of FPS! Mabye PS3 wants to be FPS King too with that controller not a hope.
  • Foxclose #32 5 years ago

I am actually looking forward to Untold Legends!
Although Motorstorm, RR7 and Resistance look sweet! :)

Also glad that Sony went down the e-game dist route!
  • TurboBailey #33 5 years ago

Hopefully there will be better games by the time it hits the UK
  • manic_mouse #34 5 years ago

A fairly solid launch lineup for those new to the "next-gen". However if you're already a 360 owner then there's very little of note that you can't already get. Resistance had better be pretty good, since it will inevitably be compared to GoW.

It just makes you wonder how long Sony have known they'd be delaying the PS3. Had it been released last spring would there have been any playable games for it at all? And does that mean they've been willfully lying to shareholders by maintaining a "spring 06" release until the last second?
  • tomkuryakin #35 5 years ago

This is not a bad launch line up, much better than the PS2 launch titles, if anyone else remembers that far back. At least it includes one RPG, albeit one I already own on the PC, but nothing to change my mind about not buying it until there's a game that I really want to play.
  • mkreku #36 5 years ago

You know how you always turn in that report the same day it's due in? Or how you do your taxes in the very last minute before they have to be turned in? I think that's mostly the case with the Playstation 3 launch titles. If it had launched earlier, the developers would have been done earlier.
  • Inflatable #37 5 years ago

The PS3 profits from the fact the Xbox 360 has been out for a year, otherwise that list would have been a lot smaller..
  • Lim-Dul #38 5 years ago

Yeah - sony had plenty of time to write XBox 360 emus on PS3. ;-)
  • JonFE #39 5 years ago

"...And does that mean they've been willfully lying to shareholders by maintaining a "spring 06" release until the last second?"

    Sony works in mysterious ways...
  • Feanor #40 5 years ago

I really liked Genji on the PS2 so I'm looking forward to seeing how the PS3 version has turned out. Benkei wrapping his hands around a massive staff in HD ftw.
  • wired009 #41 5 years ago

The lineup is nearly identical to the 360's launch lineup...Perfect Dark replaced by Resistance minus Project Gotham...I'd say that's a bit disappointing considering it's been a year since the competition released.
  • BM #42 5 years ago

    Ah, monsieur Reeeeeky Boooooooby
  • #43 5 years ago

Launch window lineup guys, not launch.

Don't expect to be able to buy 21 games at launch. Try halving that. Which half? - who knows, and that is the real bork.
  • JediMasterMalik #44 5 years ago

Having a steady flow of games is far more important than having 40 titles at launch, which is why Sony may have a problem at launch in Europe, they my have too many launch titles, unless they purposely delay some.
  • Lex_Luthor #45 5 years ago

Not crap, but not a great line up. Looking forward to seeing the Euro line up, which should include these plus Heavenly Sword, Lair, Motorstorm and a few others. Should sweeten the pot a touch.

It's just a shame I'll not be able to enjoy these games because similar stuff might have appeared on another console though. Sob sob :(

    any one else disappointed ?
  • trench #48 5 years ago

Meh. Happy days if you're into the annual EA sports titles updates and plenty of non-exclusive titles. Nothing's screaming £400 system seller yet, although the new Motor Storm video looks much improved.
  • bunnymc #49 5 years ago

Just wait for European\Australian launch lineup, there will be something for everyone. By the way a like the delay, they will fix any problem on PS3 (if there is any) till March. Yeeeeaaah!!!!
  • Steroyd #50 5 years ago

    What happened to F106?

Ever since Sony took the F1 liscence from EA the F1 series has been launched in every territory but America.
First time in 3 years America will get a Formula 1 game.

The Euro launch is going to get hectic titles like Assasin's Creed, Motostorm, Virtua Tennis, Vitua Fighter 5 and Heavenly Sword are expected to be launched around that time, i'm actually praying that some of those get delayed.
  • Vin #51 5 years ago

    What a shite lineup.

Yup Adam, because the console wars have always been won over launches. /sarcasm

BTW if Resistace is as good as everyone says it is, the PS3 launch will have a must have title, and this won't be an issue
  • Bates #57 5 years ago

Ha! Yeah, you're really not trying to troll at all! :D Why break the habit though, am I right?

I dunno... when I actually think about a lot of these product names, I still think they're pretty stupid. I mean, what is a "Walk Man" when it's at home? And I suppose you do Play it, but calling it a "Station" always struck me as being a bit pretentious. And as for "Dual Shock"...ok, it's a cool name, but it's overselling it a bit - it's a controller that shakes about a little. There are no shockwaves involved, nor is there any electrocution.

To be honest, I really don't think there's been a piece of gaming hardware with a good name yet. The names are either ludicrously boring (Nintendo Entertainment System. Nintendo Dual Screen. Nintendo Game Cube. Zzzzzzz), or just meaningless rubbish (Game Boy? X Box? Wave Bird?? Mega Drive??? Dream Cast???? Wii?????). These names catch on, yeah, but that's more because we like the products they're attached to than the name itself.

So yeah, Sixaxis should fit right in. :p
