MGS4: Snake Eraser trailer

There's a twist in the tale.

By now you've probably seen the trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots from the Tokyo Game Show - but turns out there's another one, too, titled Metal Gear Raiden: Snake Eraser.

You may recall that the previous MGS4 trailer shown at E3 back in May featured Snake and Raiden rowing about who would get to be the lead character this time around.

Well, the saga continues in the Snake Eraser trailer on show at Konami's TGS booth, and we're here to tell you all about it. Are you sitting comfortably? Then we'll begin.

The trailer picks up where the E3 trailer left off, with Raiden jumping into a time machine and heading back to the past so he can kill off Big Boss - and thus ensure that Snake never even comes into being.

Things don't go plan, however - the moment Raiden arrives at his destination, Snake knocks him out whilst parachuting in from the HALO jump that kicks off MGS3.

Next thing he knows, Raiden's appearing in the scene where we're introduced to Ocelot and Eva for the first time - only to be run over by Eva's motorbike.

Time for another teleport, and Raiden now finds himself locked in a prison cell - with Big Boss as his cell neighbour. And things really start to get weird when Colonel Volgin arrives, confuses Raiden with fellow soldier Major Raikov and attempts to feel him up. Where's Ziggy when you need him?

But Raiden's off again, and now he's inside the barrel that contains Granin's dead body, which is being whacked by Volgin. Another teleport and he's up close and personal with Eva's chests as she shows Big Boss her big scar - and getting a big fat slap for his trouble.

Now Volgin's managed to get hold of a Shagohad tank, it seems, and is attempting to run Raiden over, but Big Boss steps up to save the day. After using a rocket launcher to stop Volgin in his tracks he hands Raiden a gun - and Raiden promptly aims it at his back.

But our hero can't quite find the nuts to murder the man who just saved his life, and so he ends up chucking the gun away and watching as Big Boss and Eva ride off into the sunset. Before being crushed by a huge troop of soldiers chasing after Big Boss. And then run over by a Shagohad.

Bored yet? Well, anyway, the story doesn't end there. Quite understandably, Raiden's at the end of his tether now, and he decides it's time to stop messing around with Big Boss and take out Snake directly.

Time for another quantum leap, then - and would you believe it, suddenly we're in the original, 2D, top-down, 8bit MSX Metal Gear game from 1987. Raiden finally manages to get Snake in a corner, only to be shot by a nearby soldier - and sent tumbling back to his own time, shouting, "Big Boss... I know I should have killed you!"

Raiden then receives some loving comfort from lady interest Rose, who sensibly explains that there's no point in trying to change history. "Metal Gear Solid 4 might not be possible," she says - and here's the kicker, folks - "But what about 5...?"

What indeed.

The End. For now...

This is clearly a slow passing of the torch from Snake to Raiden. I guarantee Snake will retire in MGS4!

MGS just isn't what it used to be... all the excitment has gone from the franchise to a point were I just don't care... WTF is with the old Snake... He looks nothing like Snake with the over long face... isn't he supposed to look like Big Boss???

Ever since the story from Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater got way over the top it's just been a joke... I mean MGS had some wacky characters but the story was a little more grounded... time machines in the 4th installment, wtf???

If this is supposed to be Sonys 'ace up the sleeve' for the PS3, then the line up of games for the systems is looking very uninspired.

Does anyone actually have any idea what's going on in the MGS?

It's so riddled with twists; wouldn't it be nice if - just for once - everything WAS all it seemed?

What they should have done is have Raiden promote the xbox 360: Snake Vs Raiden
: PS3 Vs Xbox 360 MGS: The console war saga :p

Well, at least this sounds mildly more interesting than the publicly-released trailer. Yes, it looked gorgeous and all that, but it was one of the most poorly paced and dreary game clips I've ever seen - no drama, no tension, no excitement (beyond the marvelling at the technical prowess on display)...

Quite why Kojima persists in boring us all with his tedious attempts at movie directing is beyond me - he's got zero talent for it. Stick to the the games, mate - at least they're fun (well, they are when they're not being used to hammer more incomprehensible exposition down your throat, that is).

Umm... Metal Gear SOLID = SOLID Snake.

Mind you, I always thought Leon S. Kennedy was gay in RE2 and Capcom surprised me by his cool, calm temperement in RE4. But my point still stands. Metal Gear SOLID = SOLID Snake. Maybe a Metal Gear Raiden for ol' Raidey-boy... meh, that name is never going to work, is it?
  • ejstyles #14 7 years ago

Actually, Metal Gear SOLID = 3D edition of MGS as opposed to the name of the protagonist. Kojima loves his wordplay, just like Snake Eaters don't eat snakes...

I assume most of you know this was just a humorous warm-up thing. You know, like he's done for EVERY SINGLE OTHER GAME!

DaveTheHutt, I think u completely missed the point of the clip. Nowaday, most game company have problem even release one decent trailer. Kojima can do with style. Remember the word "Style".

"No talent" is like saying Steven Spielberg have "no talent". May be u don't like his style, that all I can say. After all, this is an Interactive Game. May be your mind still struck in the 80s.

This got me thinking about MGS vs Splinter Cell franchise. MGS3, Subsistance Online play, Acid2 and MGS4 are on the way. SC is just the same FPS again and again. Do u guy think so?
  • PES_Fanboy #21 7 years ago

I've always thought the voice direction and most of the plots in MGS have been embarrassing almost to the level of the original Resident Evil.

I loved the first MGS game (PS1), hated the second one, and am black / green colourblind, so any games involving the jungle are unplayable for me.

Having said that, the Psycho Mantis scene remains one of my gaming 'set piece' highlights of any game.
  • DaveTheHutt #22 7 years ago

6machines, don't confuse technical/graphical excellence with 'style' - it may have looked amazing, but from a dramatic point of view it was dead in the water! I thought that bloody army (great to look at, though it was) was never going to stop walking past Snake's bolthole.

Quite why MGS has got this reputation for quality story-telling, I do not know - I love the games, but the plots have been pretentious rubbish poorly relayed. The first rule of good cinema is 'show, don't tell' - so why does Kojima still insist on endless exposition-filled cut-scenes?

Enjoy the games, by all means, but don't kid yourself into thinking they're any more adult or 'relevant to today's world' than an average episode of Power Rangers.

"and am black / green colourblind"

Do you keep kicking the ball at the ref in Pro Evo, then? ;)
  • PES_Fanboy #25 7 years ago

No, because the referee is only 'on screen' in the new version of PES - and in any case, I've never whacked it against him. I realise this was a joke, my trouble isn't with vibrant greens (such as the grass in PES) but the darkened jungle with dark greens.

I'm sure I'm not the only person that's stood there dumbfounded in MoH while a 'gook' repeatedly stabs me with a bayonet...

love it or hate but dont slate it.

MGS IS a big title, it has a BIG fanbase (of both fanboi and the more casual gamer) its got a sophisticated albeit abstract and occasional convoluted story thats told TOP CLASS cinematography and uses pretty decent voice acting (how many games do that). Its big ambitious and a genre in itslef. you might not like it but slating it or dismissing it is plain dumb guys.

Their are a hell of a lot of games out their that simply havent got the craft, the production values and at the vision of even the poorest or pretentious moments of the MGS series. they aint perfect - sons of liberty was disapointing - but it was a disapointment in the sense it wasnt better than a pretty awesome MGS on PS1

I dont know about the rest of the baord but I would LOVE to have worked on any of the MGS series....

my god i have dyslexic fingers - sorry for the typos and spelling!

I dunno, Kojima strikes me as an antf*cker.

Get away from MGS you heathens! If you can't appreciate it then go away!
  • 6machines #30 7 years ago

DaveTheHutt, "Confuse with technical/Graphical excellence" How did I give u that impression?

    Example of style
When Solid snake first met Oclet in MGS1, the gun fight scene. Oclet have a revoler spinning in his hand. At the end got his hand chopped off and Solid said "now u two are even!" Kojima wrote the dialog himself, how many game designer can do that?

MGS1's explore the relationship between Peace, Threat of nuclear weapon and Arm dealer's love of war and profit. Power Ranger's stuff? From a kid point of view, yes because when they see Metal gear, it looks like Power Ranger's ride.

Raven final fight with Snake at sub zero temp Beautiful! It showed how freaking cold there was. A bad ass Raven. U never see this in Hollywood ACTION movie.

May be, MGS series doesn't have the same classy as "lost in translation(2003)", "The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988)" but be fair compare action to action like Die Hard (1988). Yes, MGS does the classic "Show, don't tell", the plot only reveal at the very end. I assumed you play so far, right? By the way, without the endless exposition-filled cut-scenes, it would be FPS, u talk about.
