Ratchet & Clank for PSP News

PSP News by Tom Bramwell

20 April, 2006

Ratchet & Clank appears to be on its way to PlayStation Portable - and in a fairly advanced state already.

The news comes courtesy of a product page on EBGames.com - not always a reliable guide, but in this case a pretty rounded collection of details including some screenshots.

According to the page, Ratchet & Clank's first PSP outing sees the platforming duo discover the forgotten race of Technomites while on holiday, only to realise the little basts are bent on world domination. Playing as both Ratchet and Clank, you'll take them on, with a Shrink Ray and a customisable armour system amongst other things. The game looks to be upholding the series' usual mixture of platforming and gunnery.

There's also talk of downloadable multiplayer missions, which suggests some sort of wireless multiplayer mode - and there's specific talk of Wi-Fi item-trading.

Sony hasn't said anything about Ratchet & Clank on PSP yet - and the name's strictly a placeholder - but don't be too surprised if it turns up amongst the ranks at E3. Much as R&C's pal from over the tracks, Daxter, did during last year's show. Daxter of course went on to be one of the PSP's most impressive outings to date - let's hope the same's true with R&C.

EBGames suggests Ratchet & Clank is due out on PSP next March.

The 1st and 3rd games were great fun, and I love the Futurama-like look of them. Fingers crossed this is an entirely new game and not a port/rehash.

What kind of a person posts first just so that they can draw attention to the fact that they've posted first?

Have you played any R&C games MrT? I really liked R&C3 on the PS2.

That's one thing I don't understand when people complain about the Dualshock.

Surely your hands are the same size and the layout of your thumbs are the same just mirrored???

WHOA - calm down kids! Have I landed in a hornet's nest of PS zealots?

It's just a game we're talking about here right!? And my question in the 1st post wasn't a criticism of those who buy this game. Whatever floats your boat.

It's just that, to me, it looks like a wannabee title with no inherent spark or wit.

There've been 3 R+C games in the space of, what, 3 years?

The games weren't laugh-out-loud funny, but they weren't short on charm (and creative, funny adverts: http://gameads.gamepressure.com/tv_games_commercials.asp?SEA
RCH=ratchet ), and if you play them they came across as highly polished and somewhat original, not 'wannabee'.

Actually, I there was 4 released in 3 years (R&C/Winter 2002, R&C 2/Winter 2003, R&C 3/Winter 2004 & Ratchet: Gladiator/Winter 2005).

I do think it's a bit wrong of you to judge the games without having even played them, though MrT. They are a bit heavy on the shooting for my tastes (hence haven't played Gladiator), but they're very solid for what they do, with some good humour variety and all wrapped in one of the more technically competent packages on PS2. Well worth hunting the early ones down for just a few quid.

"So would that make it a platformer or a shooter? Does this kind of hybrid/genre mix make the game a "jack of all trades and master of none"?"

no - and i "pity da fool" who would think that...

Looking forward to this. I've only played the first Ratchet and Clank, but I love it. Are the other two good? Are they much different?

The R&C 1, 2 & 3 were all fantastic. Didn't bother with Ratchet Gladiator, though I notice it is out on budget soon.

Icebox - more of the same but I should say that R&C3 is a LOT better than the first one. It is well worth checking out 2 and 3 in my opinion - some of the best games the PS2 ever saw.

I'm a Nintendo fanboy, but credit where credit's due. Ratchet & Clank 1 and 3 (didn't like the second one) are two of the best games this generation imo (alongside the Sly Cooper trilogy and Klonoa 2), and it's only because these games are so good, and they're Sony exclusives, that I've bit my tongue and bought 3 PS2's on the trot (they keep breaking down!!!). I thoroughly recommend picking up all of those games, even if you don't think you'll like them, because they all seem to have had a lot of care and attention put in to them.

btw @ Kiigan; where did you hear that 'Gladiator' is going to go budget soon?

I think some of the responses here reveal a lot...

I've been on many Nintendo forums and they take accusations of "kiddie" and other such taunts either in their stride or on the chin. It's just a game after-all.

But man! Some PS owners are definitely the worst. They play games and they're cool (or so they think). Though many are just pasty-faced, overweight, geeks who need to play a little less and socialise a bit more.

Just question their choice of software and it's like you've just insulted their mother. It's like they're not even playing a game but some cutting-edge interactive entertainment.

Maybe you should go back to those Nintendo forums then, take it on the chin like a man.. or wait a few years until you've left school.
