Rule the world in ArchLord News

PC MMO News by Tom Bramwell

20 January, 2006

While the world continues to spaff on Warcraft, Codemasters is not-so-quietly building up its own interest in MMOs, having just signed up another Korean MMORPG in the shape of ArchLord.

ArchLord, developed by NHN Games, in open beta in Korea and due out in Q3, is a fairly typical MMO with a nice big juicy twist: every month, one player gets to be an ArchLord, giving them supreme control of the entire world and big scary powers to mash people up with.

That world is called Kantra, and has been styled with Renderware as you can see from the shots, cos, you can pick engines apart by graphics. Sometimes you don't even see the code; you just see blo[THWACK! THWACK! THWACK! THWACK! THWACK! Sorry about that, readers - Ed]. Audio (what's that ringing in my ears?) has been recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra, which you can't tell from the screenshots.

ArchLord sees players banding together to uncover ancient relics of the Archons, which lead to this immense power when one person has a lot of them. Along with all the questing, there'll be plenty of room for PvP, with sprawling free battle areas and special places where guilds can go head to head.

It's all set to go live in Q3 2006, and we'll bring you more on ArchLord soon.

Ha yes.. saw a lot of this when I was in Korea last year. People seemed to be pretty excited about it but apparently it is very "Old Skool" :) Grind grind grind... the way Asians like their MMORPGs/JRPGS

Does the world really need more MMORGs? I mean, considering the fact that people have a certain time budget to spend on recreational activities, and considering furthermore that many people are already spending a large part of their budget on WoW, why bother which yet another MMORPG?

Probably not.. but Korea needs them. They play nothing else ;)

Who knows... WoW still has many bad parts (end game for example) so the genre still needs to evolve. This can only happen when more games are made.

how *does* one 'spaff'? Is it something the young people do, innit?

yeah, one doesn't want to 'spaff off' to the hardcore grinding, eh?

(still not sure if he's ever unknowingly 'spaffed off' himself, but refuses to miss opportunity for gratuitous innuendo)

With that other MMO that Codies announced the other day, it seems strange to me why they'd bring out yet another one!! As someone says above, the market is already full of MMO's in the shape of Warcraft with Guild Wars and SW Galaxies having a reasonable share as well.

This just stinks of Codies trying to jump on yet another bandwagon in sheer desperation to make some much needed money! They tried with footy games and look what happened there!

GamerAddict - bit unfair no? We had a space for an MMO ever since Dragon Empires was cancelled - we were just taking a while to find one that we liked. We've now got RF Online (starting beta very soon, and most anticipated MMO on www.mmorpg.com), Dungeons and Dragons Online (started beta last week) and then Archlord. We've also got one more MMO licence to announce very soon that'll be *very* interesting.

It's quite a few MMOs just there but as we've got a new division of Codemasters - Codemasters Online Gaming - dedicated just to this genre you'll see us move more and more into MMOs and subscription-based products. But then we're branching out into casual online games as well through Funsta.com - so we're just expanding, that's all. Doubt it's "sheer desperation" as we're fine for cash, especially since the sale of stock to Benchmark last year (Press Release from last April)

Fair play having a seperate division to concentrate on the online gaming, its an area that will need a lot of time and effort, but honestly, is there really room for another 3 titles???

Shouldn't efforts be put into releasing one of them? I obviously don't know the full ins and outs of the deals but surely there'll be a hell of a lot of work involved in maintaining 3 MMO's? That'd take a HUGE department!
