DOOM movie sequel?

Why should I! (Oof.)

With the DOOM movie set to do Hellish things in the US this Friday (probably), key cast members including The Rock, Karl Urban and Rosamund Pike have started talking about the possibility of a sequel - and while producers John Wells and Lorenzo di Bonaventura are reticent when it comes to the question of what happens next (or so they claim - it doesn't appear to have stopped them gassing about it), it sounds like there's a decent amount of enthusiasm for the idea.

Urban and Pike play brother and sister team John and Samantha Grimm in the film, which opens in the UK on December 2nd. Pike seems most keen - openly claiming she's signed on for more and adding that next time she wants a gun.

Meanwhile, Wells says "we have nothing planned" but adds that there was talk of the possibility during the shoot. "We would love to do another picture with [the film's star The Rock]," he added, "and if he wanted to do the next Doom, I'm sure we could figure it out." As for The Rock himself: "We've talked about it, and it's possible." Nice one Dwayne.

The film, directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak working off a Dave Callaham script, has yet to be reviewed very widely, but IGN FilmForce claims that it's the best videogame adaptation yet - arguing that the action (including a fairly direct homage to the game) is more important than the story and acting, which aren't exactly brilliant. We're not exactly sure why they kept the Mars setting but decided to go with evil mutant monsters, either. Hell's been frozen out, never mind over.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura, finally, argues, "You can't start thinking about a sequel before a picture even opens," before inevitably doing just that. "That's why we ended on a surprise. We went with the best ending, and we know the audience is very sophisticated." Tsk.

Presumably the question of whether or not there's a sequel will owe at least something to the quality of the film and its reception. Bahahaha. Yeah right. Anyway - we'll probably let you know what we think of the film, but not on December 2nd. We're busy that night, what with it being Xbox 360 launch day in Europe. Tiiiiiming!

One way of ruining game movies that actually DO turn out decent: Make sequels out of 'em.

This one will be ALL FPS CAMERA! Cuz thatz the coolest part of the first movie!

  • myiagros #5 6 years ago

having seen some of the first person section it looks kind of entertaining in a lethargic, can't be bothered to concentrate on anything with any depth, kind of way.

    (Not necesarily a bad thing)

Ahhh, movies.....my first and true love. Why can't you get on with my mistress, games?

This one is really up against it. I've seen the trailers during my (at least thrice weekly - yes, I have a problem!) visits to the cinema, and frankly I'm at a loss to wonder why:

    A) This game was picked to make a game from, given the TINY scope and story potential;
    B) They chose The Rock, a man with a proven track record of ONLY making terrible movies

I'll watch it, cos I watch pretty much all new releases (£10.99 a month for unlimited cinema card), again, like EG, not on the release date as I'll be all 360ed up, but the Farce is strong in this one...
  • kangarootoo #7 6 years ago

I bet for the actors involved this was a fun film to work on. I can easily imagine them being into doing a sequel.

"B) They chose The Rock, a man with a proven track record of ONLY making terrible movies"

Welcome to the Jungle was pretty good I thought, not exactly head food but very well put together.

I recommened everyone rent "Undead" from their local video rental boutique asap. I saw a trailer on apple.com and thought "ooh, zombies, I'll rent that". It turned out to be nothing like what I was expecting. Its actually a bonker Australian horror comedy more in common with Bad Taste or Braindead than Dawn of the Dead (but less gloopy than those two Peter Jackson works). Absolutely outstanding, with loads of little really funny touches.

I'll concede, The Rock's movies are better than Hulk Hogan's were.

WtTJ was mmkay, but nothing I'd pay to see. I guess you have to be in the mood, don't get me wrong, I *like* mindless flicks sometimes, but his are so asinine that, unlike other movies, I couldn't even appreciate it on camp values..

I reckon holleywood studios should bring back the 'B-Movie' classification tag back. This way a film like Doom would be approached more openly by the 'gaming public' as expectations would be lowered - thus profits raised, because we'll all go "might as well check it out - its a b-movie afterall".

Hey I'm good at this - Forget this IT job, I'm going to hollywood baby.

Afterall, if they let someone like Uwe Boll make films, any man and his dog can make one.

Best movie about a game, although that isn't very much. Saw this last night and had fun.

The fps-section was cool what whit the chainsaw and all that.

If there's a sequel, do not give Rosamund Pike a gun, give her a nude scene.
  • kangarootoo #11 6 years ago

Not sure that something like Doom would qualify as a B-movie, as the budgest is too high and therefore the special effects are probably a bit too special.

"If there's a sequel, do not give Rosamund Pike a gun, give her a nude scene."

Hey, lets not close down our options here. I'm sure she could do both.

    >"B) They chose The Rock, a man with a proven track record of ONLY making terrible movies "

That's unfair. Welcome to the jungle was good. Scorpion king was okay, walking tall was....a bit meh, and he was one of the two reasons to watch be cool (andre 3000 from outkast was the only other person to save the movie) because he's acting and character is was actually funny to watch.

Come to think of it, he's had better movies than Vin "my middle name is Vin Diesel" Diesel.
  • kangarootoo #13 6 years ago

Except Pitch Black of course, which was awesome (though it could have done with a zombie or two).
  • The-Bodybuilder #14 6 years ago

    >"Except Pitch Black of course"

    True. His ONLY good movie.

    /mumble

I enjoyed XxX, on an ironic level

    /mumble
  • tengu #16 6 years ago

xXx was the best action spoof ever made imo. And Chronicles of Riddick was a decent enough flick.
  • kangarootoo #17 6 years ago

I quite liked xXx too, but I'm a real whore in the video shop (or I would be if my back could stand it, ahahahahaha, sorry). It takes a gvery special kind of crap film to make me bored I'll tell you.

"Boiler room" was pretty good too. It wasn't really a Vin Diesel movie but he was in it before he was famous and he does a very good job (he doesn't punch anything and he wears a suit, unusual I know). Its a drama about illegal share dealing. I know that makes it sound more like a documentary but its actually quite engaging.

  • kangarootoo #19 6 years ago

Aight, is UGC (rebranded now to Cineworld). They're complete bastards though, they now apparently 'have the power to search your bags' lest you DARE bring in food / drink not purchased on the premises.
  • kangarootoo #21 6 years ago

"have the power to search your bags"

Cheeky buggers. They'd discover they also have the power to kiss my ass and refund my ticket if they tried that on me.
  • Xerx3s #22 6 years ago

Meh. Im going. But if they fuckup this film (most likely), then ill be laughing all the way through and throw rotten tomatoes & grannies.
  • Feanor #23 6 years ago

"I'll concede, The Rock's movies are better than Hulk Hogan's were."

The Rundown was a very entertaining movie and The Rock was great in it.
  • captain-future #24 6 years ago

surprise. it seems that this video-game-gone-movie isn't completely bull...

good actors make all the difference, and when I heard that Se Rock plays the same character as in Be Cool - I think I will go and see this movie.

/tries ... really tries to maintain a straigh face.
  • Sko #25 6 years ago

"You can't start thinking about a sequel before a picture even opens,"

Guess it depends on the film. Raimi signed on for the sequel to Spiderman a month before it opened.
  • caligari #26 6 years ago

"I'll concede, The Rock's movies are better than Hulk Hogan's were."

    Exsqueeze me?

At least Hulk "WHATCHYA GONNA DO" Hogan was entertaining.

I'd happily sit through a night of Suburban Commando, Mr Nanny and No Hold's Barred
(there's a perfect Friday night for Channel 5).

Oh my god...don't even get me started on '3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain'...where oh WHERE was Hulk's Oscar?!
  • Bezzy #27 6 years ago

"This one will be ALL FPS CAMERA! Cuz thatz the coolest part of the first movie! "

You could do an FPS camera movie very artfully. I think it HAS been done before. Don't know what the movie is called though.

And that excellent channel 4 sitcom, "Peepshow" was all done from people's POV.
  • AHiFi #28 6 years ago

    I loved Mr. Nanny...genius. :)
