EA gets its SKATEs on News

Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Tom Bramwell

19 September, 2006

Electronic Arts has officially unveiled SKATE - its attempt to break Activision's stranglehold on the skateboarding sub-genre.

Due out in 2007 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, SKATE is in development at EA's Black Box studio in Vancouver, and features pro skaters Danny Way and PJ Ladd among others.

EA's promising "innovative controls, authentic cameras and a fully reactive skateboarding city", along with "physics-driven animation".

"Our game offers a skate mecca for both skaters and gamers in search of the definitive authentic skating video game experience," says Scott Blackwood, executive producer.

"We're focused on capturing the actual feeling of skating with the innovative control system, the physics driven animations, the intelligent cameras working together to really deliver the closest thing to being on a board."

Good point, it does seems there hasn't been much competition for Activision so they haven't really tried to push the envelope too much

This has potential to be good if the SSX team are on it.

If your skateboarding game doesn't have a big celebrity and loads of product placement in it there really is no point.

They're aiming for two analog sticks controlling. I doubt it's going to match or be better than the THPS standard.

Having said that, it'd be great if someone made a good skateboarding game that rivals the THPS experience. Maybe Neversoft would then make a good THPS for a change.

Maybe someone other than EA. So, this game will be popular, because it's EA, but not good.

if the SSX team does it then it'll probably end up being as arcady, if not more so, than than Tony Hawk. I agree that Neversoft needs some competition, though. Their recent Tony Hawk outings have been absolutely terrible. Hopefully Project 8 will change that, though.

Maybe it'll be a hard-core simulation where any enjoyment is removed as you spend 4 weeks trying to master the ollie.

This would have been a good idea maybe a year or so a go, but as it stands this game sounds too similar to Activision's latest entry in their series, ie a more realistic approach. It'll probably be good but not enough to overtake Tony Hawk right away. Either that or it turns out to be the pro evo of skateboarding games :p
