Jaws becomes a game News

PlayStation 2 Xbox News by Tom Bramwell

19 August, 2004

US publisher Majesco has secured the rights to develop a game based on Steven Spielberg's Jaws, and plans to release one on PS2 and Xbox in summer 2005 - to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the film's original opening.

It sounds like Ecco the Dolphin. With a shark. Which is probably why Majesco signed Ecco developer Appaloosa to do the coding. We're honestly not sure which film those guys saw - this shark, the only character we control, is just protecting its territory, apparently, having been "driven to a predacious frenzy by the sonic emanations of underwater oil drilling equipment".

Indeed, it's our job, as the Great White Shark, to drive off the pesky humans and their unsanctioned tomfoolery by leaping around and using twisting attacks on dive platforms, boats and other vulnerable ocean-top targets. But naturally that won't make an entire game, so along the way to his meal our delicate little pride-punctured shark - who never wanted any of this, remember - will have to solve a series of action-based puzzles.

Dizzied by all this, we sought out the fluff quotes for some form of explanation. "The film's mixture of action, adventure and suspense terrified the masses," says CEO Jesse Sutton. With you so far, mate. "The game will capture that same action and excitement as the movie, but this time, the shark enjoys some pay-back."

Um. Let the feeding frenzy commence...

Wasn't this in development already but without the Jaws license? I seem to remember seeing a story on this very site sometime not too long ago regarding the Ecco people doing a 'you are a shark' game....

It sounds like it could be really bad - why? Well, the tone of the article certainly doesn't help. In fact, sloppy journalism rarely helps.

At least these folks are trying to do something a bit different, which should be applauded.

It could have been based on Jaws II. Or Jaws III.

I want to go out sailing with Brody and Quint and blow the shit out of a big shark. I do not want to 'defend my territory'.

At least they could let you eat kids and stuff, that might be cool.

I can see someone who could probably do with having their ego shot.

They bought the license just to have the music in the game. That's my bet anyway.

there IS a game in the license. and it could be very enjoyable, but providing a 'backstory' to a top-tier predator is a bit idiotic. White Pointers arent territorial.
if there was a coastline 'sandbox' level for the player to mess around in and having feed to keep playing. the humans would react to the continous feeding and start to hunt you.

I'm holding out more hope for this than I am for Vivendi's Scarface adaptation. I mean come on - you've got to live up to not only one of the best films of all time, but one of the best games of all time to boot (a game which more than likely will piss all over your slapdash effort).

At least with Jaws it'll have nice water effects.

Apparently there is much marine biologists still don't know about what sharks get up to.

It's all clear now. When not breeding or feeding sharks like nothing more than solving puzzles.

Could be fun though.

Can we have a 3D version that removes the story or Michael Caine as an unlockable?

LOL - diminished responsibility you say? The shark in Jaws was evil FFS! It's like saying Michael Myers only killed people in Halloween because he had a headache...

This game sounds sh*t, but if they make it an 18 and give us full gore then they might salvage something out of it - if only comedy value :-)

Donglebomb, all I'm saying is that writing off something in it's early stages of development, no matter how bad an idea it may seem at the time, is really a bit unfair. Why? Because it could be really good. It just seems a different idea for a game, which has to be a healthy thing I'm sure you'd agree.

Oh, and I PR for nobody except myself.

Had a look at the videos of this on the Sole Predator website a while back. Looked like it had potential, though the shark's animation was a bit iffy to me, and I was disappointed that destroying little submersibles only involved doing the old nose-charge into them.
Still, presumably early days yet, hold out a little hope it'll see a PC port.

Ithink it sounds like the game could be fun, if done right. It's just that the application of the Jaws license is downright bizarre.

And if you need a quick reminder of what the movie was all about, you could do worse than check this 30 seconds cartoon version.

Judging by the looks of both Jaws/Sole Predator and Bloody Waters, there’s still a lot of room left for a decent shark game.

Check out the movies for Bloody Waters:
http://www.pineapple-interactive.com

One of movies features a bloke who looks like some sort of reject from Virtua Fighter. Watch him walk over to the usual in game barrel, either he is very short, or the barrel well over sized ;)

Credit where credit’s due, the water looks very real (if a little out of scale with the shark at times).
