Phantasy Star Universe on 360

SEGA confirms.

SEGA's announced that Phantasy Star Universe will be released on Xbox 360 this autumn along with previously announced PlayStation 2 and PC versions.

PSU - no relation to the thing that makes your PC work - consists of a single-player adventure spanning multiple planets and Xbox Live-based multiplay.

"The reinvigoration of this beloved franchise on the Xbox 360 signifies another step for SEGA towards next-gen leadership," said SEGA's Scott A. Steinberg, implying that the 360 version will be pretty and everything.

Played online, the Xbox 360 version will allow you to group together with your friends (or Friends in this case), making a squad of up-to-six, and enter worlds where hundreds of other players are playing. Previous Phantasy Star Online games were limited to groups of four and nobody else. And obviously the old-days Phantasy Star stuff was single-player. So that's the whole history in a paragraph really.

Expect to see and hear more about PSU's Xbox 360 version at E3 next month.

  • thegamesthething #5 6 years ago

PSO was by far the most simplistic MM(ish)ORPG(sort of) I've ever played. And it was great. Hope for the same from this.

That will be a shame. I only started playing PSO online on the DC when the Hunter's Liecence was dropped, and never ventured online with the xbox version.

If Guild Wars can manage it...
  • Teeth #10 6 years ago

Thing is, count the number of extra Guild Wars versions/expansions you've had to buy and measure that up against a monthly fee. It's probably less, I don't know. But new versions ad expansions of PSO don't occur nearly as often.

Bloody loved the feel of this on the Dreamcast, it had a real charm about it.

Don't know how it will be with voice, there was a lovely anonimity with typed messages - you didn't actually know that cute little elven female running in front of you was actually a 14 year old male who would probably smash a bottle over your head if you saw him in the street.

Hi chaps, Last time I heard from the developer, each on-line version is going to be seperated. so the xbox 360 users cannot play with the PC users who cannot play with the PS2 users and visa versa. It'll be a good game if the PC beta is anything to go by, but it's still a long way from completion.

Great news, I definate buy for me. So long as there are no subcription charges ¬_¬
  • Xerx3s #16 6 years ago

So, the pc & 360 versions will have ps2 graphics? The added monthly fee more or less killed the previous incarnation for me... :(
  • c.lo #17 6 years ago

So, is the 360 going to be able to use a keyboard? I cant imagine playing pso without one...
  • OnlyMe #18 6 years ago

I thought Phantasy Star Universe was supposed to be an offline rpg?
  • tengu #19 6 years ago

It's offline and online. 40 hour single player mode and online mode.
  • ilmaestro #20 6 years ago

Bollocks, now I don't know whether to cancel my order for the PS2 version or not. Actual release date at E3, please, and try not to change it three times this time around. If it does turn out that the main wait is for the online service to be improved (the single player game is as good as finished according to the devs) and then you can't play against people on another format that would be the single most gh3y thing ever.

Unless the reason for the delay is to do with wanting the 360 version to launch at the same time.

It's definitely online for the PC version. You can play cross platform too like FFXI afaik.
EDIT: Just double check pso-world and in their FAQ: "3.26: Can PS2 and PC users play on the same servers?
A: Yes! It was recently revealed by IGN, that PS2 and PC players will play on linked servers!"

It will be awesome. Until it gets hacked :(

Not really going to happen since it's server side for the online part this time.

I shall be watching the single-player game with some interest. I've never played a Phantasy Star game before.
  • TripSkyway #24 6 years ago

If theres no monthly Fee I buy, if not it can stay on the shelf.
  • varsas #27 6 years ago

    >If theres no monthly Fee I buy, if not it can stay on the shelf.

It's firstly a offline RPG like Final Fantasy. The Online aspect is something you can take part in or not; it's up to you but it does require a small fee each month to keep your online data, add new content (quests, equipment and events) and maintain the servers.
  • miiiguel #28 6 years ago

I hope GS points will be strictly for the offline quest. I found that I'm a bit asocial, as I can't get a much of a "kick" with online play. I guess I need to control my pace, and... everything else.

It better still have the same kind of weird haunting atmosphere that PSO has. I swear the game sends eldritch signals to uncharted sections of the brain. It might be the music, but it happens in the field too... the game just kind of screws with my mind in a good way. Well up for this, whatever the platform.

WOAH! Never saw this coming! The hell with the PS2 version now! :p
