PS2 Liberty City Stories dated

And priced.

Rockstar's officially announced a release date for the PS2 version of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories. It'll be out in the US on June 6th, and available here on June 9th.

In a brief press release issued yesterday evening, the publisher also confirmed that punters would pay EUR 29.99 or GBP 19.99 for the game - in other words, it'll be at a budget price point from day one.

That's likely to be because Rockstar accepts that people place different levels of value on handheld games - and Liberty City Stories, even after it's been ported to the PS2, is ostensibly a PlayStation Portable game.

That's not to say it's a bad one of course. At the time of release, we were quite happy to return to Liberty City - setting of the first 3D Grand Theft Auto title, GTA III - and enjoyed the multiplayer options, although we did remark that we'd probably score it less if it appeared as a proper home console game. Ah. But then we were probably thinking of it in terms of full price. Ooh.

So we'll have to see what happens. Next up for Rockstar though - as we reported on Thursday - is the release of Table Tennis for Xbox 360, on May 26th.

Expect reviews of those around the times of release.

Good good. I'll be getting this then!

As much as I hate to admit it, I probably will too. But knowing Norway it'll end up costing the US price times two. So I'll probably import it because it's below the tax radar.

And the one game that might have got me to buy a PSP... is soon available for £20.

I wasn't impressed with the PSP version. I think it was because of the horrible ergonomitry of the PSP.
  • Tomo #5 6 years ago

Yeah, similar to me myrimican. No need to update my PSP now really. I take it the PSP version isn't going to fall in price either?

    It shall be miiiiiiine
  • Perry #7 6 years ago

PSP version was excellent. Not sure if I need it on the PS2, got enough games waiting to be finished

Is this a "new" game within Liberty City or are they reusing missions from the original PS2 game?

The whole point of this game is it's GTA adapted for handheld play, and that's how it shines, shorter missions and more minigames etc. Kind of pointless playing it on a home system.

Not sure I agree with you there. Sure, an 'epic' style lengthy game won't work very well on a handheld - but that's because of the limitations of the handheld, not because 'shorter' style games don't work in your living room.

I enjoy plenty of quick turn-around games on the consoles. Monkeyball, Warioware etc for example.

I also think (from reviews I've read) that I'll enjoy Liberty City Stories a lot more with a proper dual-analogue pad.

Fundamentally I think there's a flaw in your reasoning - The fact that handheld consoles don't work for long periods of play does NOT mean that normal consoles don't work for short periods of play.

You've all got to get it as it's a piece of gaming history going down:

It's the last game ever to have my name in the credits ;-)

This is a bit of blow to the PSP library, but it's still got some mighty strong titles and I'm sure E3 will reveal a hell of a lot more. The PSP is far from doomed as many are predicting, but Sony will want to try and secure exclusives for the handheld for longer periods of time if it's to keep up the level of interest in the PSP for the long term.

People are predicting the PSP is doomed? :)

    Are they total morons?

"Following recent reports of a delay, Rockstar Games today announced the official release date and price point for the upcoming PS2 version of Rockstar Leeds' Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, which debuted on PSP late last year. The game will hit shelves June 6, 2006 with a budget price of $19.99. It will follow in Europe three days later for 29.99 Euro (GBP 19.99 in the UK)."

so they're paying half as much in the US for the same game

don't forget the unincluded sales tax!
  • Genji #18 6 years ago

"p.s. screw the GTA haters. If you don't like it, feel free not to comment at all."

But it's ever so much fun! Especially when people take it personally!

This might be a new thing. I can't recall many handheld-to-console ports off the top of my head.

Pretty soon, people are going to complain "the only games that get released for the PS2 are PSP ports! Gah!"

Oh how the tables have turned.
