WWE PSP-PS2 link revealed

Rage in a cable.

The latest in the most popular branch of THQ's evergreen wrestling series, WWE Smackdown! Vs. RAW 2006, is to feature full link-up features between the PSP and PS2 versions, the publisher revealed today.

In what is sure to become the norm for franchises gracing both machines, the feature-set provided by connecting the two is admittedly impressive. Owners of both versions will be able to swap season data between the two, meaning you can play on your PS2 at home, then transfer you status to your PSP, trundle around on buses and trains playing from where you left off, then transfer everything back to your PS2 when you get home and carry on. This, theoretically, means that you can constantly play a wrestling game for all waking hours, your physical location ceasing to be an object. Welcome to the future, popstars. No one said it was going to be pretty.

But that's not all! You can also exchange characters, belts and unlockables between the two versions. There's still more! This means owners of each version will be able to enjoy an exclusive, as yet unnamed character from the PSP version on PS2 and vice versa. IT'S NOT OVER YET. The linking feature means you can win unique belts from other players playing WiFi multiplayer on PSPs, then take them back to your PS2 and battle for them online on your TV. The possibilities are INSANOSAUR.

Other PSP link-up games are few and far between at the moment. The PSP and PS2 versions of PES5 are known to talk to each other, as are Jak X: Combat Racing on PS2 and Daxter on PSP, but there's not too much else going on in the connectivity department at the moment. You can expect the concept to become more common in 2006.

The PSP version of WWE Smackdown! Vs. RAW 2006 releases in December, the PS2 version launching on November 11th.

Lets hope PSP gets more connectivity like this and doesn't go the way of gamecubegba linking, which was mostly not great

multiply that 42 by 10,000, and you might be a bit closer to the number of copies they sell of this each year...

    they can't ALL be wrong

    edit: well... maybe they can...

But do i not have to still buy two copies of the game?
  • Carlo #8 6 years ago

Are they going to discount the game when you buy BOTH the PSP and PS2 version in some kind of 'box set' thing? That would help it's case.

Is it just me, or is this exactly what Nintendo tried to encourage with GBA connectivity?

Addmitedly, with the PSP and PS2 being better matched power-wise, it's maybe a more tempting prospect, but everyone (or at least the majority) said that connectivity wasn't the way forward, full stop.

"Does anyone - this side of the Atlantic - enjoy wrestling, anyway?
    Just wondering.."

Actually the WWE is more popular in the UK than it is in US. UK events Sell out extremely fast and TV ratings are much better compared to thoughs in the US. Perhaps its because we very rarely get to see any good wrestling live though.

are the games fixed in the same way as the real matches?

is pes 5's linkup option gonna allow you carry on your master league on the bus then?
  • tonynibbles #14 6 years ago

    SOCOM 3 and Fireteam Bravo!

    They have link up.

I've meddled with the PES5 link and up, its very basic - but pretty sweet.

As much as I hate the thought of buying 2 copies of the same game - if its a game you just fecking lurve - then its always gonna be great to quickly swap the data over and contrinue playing on the train.

"Enjoyin' wrestling will always be a mystery to me.. "

As much as it will be a mystery to me, but then, Cricket is a mystery to most of the world, and on the off chance that they DO come to understand its rules, many people puzzle over how people can enjoy it. See, its different strokes for different folks and I think we should tolerate... er, understand that.
