FEAR patched to 1.01

And it's out today, by the way.

Hurrah! FEAR's out today. Yes! Just to clarify, it is in fact a Tuesday, but for some reason Vivendi's decided to release Monolith's scarily good looking scary FPS game today, worldwide, rather than waiting until Friday. Good of them really.

Equally good of them/horrendously awful of them, depending on which way you look at it, is the news that there's also a patch out for it, nudging the game up to version 1.01 by fixing a few handfuls of bugs mostly relating to the multiplayer. For example, you won't fall out of the level by accessing the menu on a ladder any more, which is good news.

Grab it from 3D Gamers if you need it. And for those wondering, our FEAR review will be going up very soon.

I want FEAR but I don't think I'll be able to run it particularly well :(

    And I can't really afford it :(

    What about Plan B, Deblington?
  • Moonprince #3 6 years ago

I was at Plan B the other week. Not a bad place at all. Found in Brixton for those that don't know.

@Derblington : Don't be too concerned. Despite all the hype and the hoopla, it is a 10 hour long corridor shooter. An excellent one, make no mistake, with some cool new additions. Basically it is looking as good as it is because we have been starved of good PC shooters of late.

So run it however you can - the real charm is in the gameplay. Graphics are awesome, but even if you tone down the settings, you won't miss out on the excellent enemy AI.

arse, ordered this as I needed a decent single player shooter to play while waiting for my adsl to be reconnected and now i need to d/l'd a patch. :-(

At least it's not too big, should only take an hour or so. o_o

What is this Plan B you speak of?

I'm always looking for good 2nd hand games shops in London.

According to the patch notes, it's not really doing much for the SP mode, AntherMartin. I also can't find any mention of the patch improving the performance in general, there's just mentioned that some optimisation has taken place for a few MP maps.

Alot of people with Nvidia cards are swearing theres a performance increase, even with there being no mention in the release notes.

    /explodes.

"I want FEAR but I don't think I'll be able to run it particularly well "

Why not.. try the demo.. and see if it works well? Is that not what demos are for (on pc at least?)
  • Talha #11 6 years ago

@Furbs: I'd amend your sentence to 'A lot of people with Nvidia cards are swearing..."

See, there are so many issues these days with NVidia cards - I have certainly seen less complaints about ATI cards. Their drivers manage to introduce more issues with every release. I should know, i had my copy of Far Cry totally botched due to the fatal mistake of upgrading to NVidia hardware midway through the game.

I am not surprised by the performance increase claims, but having seen none, I will just say it is wishful thinking. Sorry for the rant - had to get it out...
  • Furbs #12 6 years ago

smelly, that assumes the demo is based on final code...

"MAKE THE GAME WORK PROPERLY ON RELEASE!!!!!"

they have done.. thus the release day patch.. If a game is launched today, then the chances are it was finished 2 or 3 months ago. So if the developer tidies some things up, etc for the release day, surely thats a good thing?

Especially as the game works perfectly fine, unpatched. You'll see that the bug they removed from single player is hardly worth mentioning. Hasn't crashed once for me so far.

How you finding it Lou? Scary? Gonna pick it up in about an hour.

This looks like a dog's dinner on my PC.

My impressions are buried in the forum somewhere. :)

It's great, absolute top stuff, but as Talha has said already, it's a pure, corridor shooter FPS. But the combat is so great, easily the best yet in any FPS to date imo, that nothing else hardly matters. It concentrates on one core element, namely small-scale gunfights, and pulls it off incredibly well, and the scary elements (and it is scary) are just the icing on the cake. An FPS for people that love FPS games, if that makes any sense. :)

Any outdoor sections of any decent size?

I got FEAR on Saturday morning. I think it's an excellent FPS - I love the way the enemies work togetherand use tactics to try and one-up me. When one is left alive from a group, they'll run off to regroup with another team. They flank me, they surround me, they ambush me - just some stellar AI at work in the game.

Quake 4 next. Then City of Villains. Boy, my PC is getting a workout this month...

out today? I picked it up in Asda just this past friday.
  • Stickman #23 6 years ago

Call me picky, but I think a game should be nice and tidy and bug free on release. Add-ons, updates, and fixes that perhaps the community might have suggested would make the game work better, fine, but if I'm shelling out £30 for a game, I want it perfect from the get-go. (This game is a bad example seeing as the fixes are miniscule, I just mean in general.)

That's pretty crap. Play.com have put my delivery as recorded. I probably won't get it till Thursday. I could have went down to the shops and got it if I knew they would change the release date!

I hate freaking release dates! Sorry... :)
