No online in Tony Hawk PS3 News

PlayStation 3 News by Games Industry.biz

18 September, 2006

Developer Neversoft has dropped online play from the PlayStation 3 version of Tony Hawk's Project 8, a key third-party launch title for Sony's next-gen console.

The developer has only recently received development kits for the PlayStation 3 and has not had time to implement online play ahead of the consoles' US and Japanese launch in November, according to an article on IGN.

"Neversoft is confident the PS3 version of the game will ship at launch in November, but it still hasn't received all of the software libraries and has no indication of how the online components will work on PS3, so it's not offering them," detailed the report.

With online play a major battleground for all the next-generation consoles, the loss of online features for a key third-party franchise could prove to be another blow for Sony - already dealing with the aftermath of a delay to the European launch of the console.

Neversoft was the first developer to offer online play for the PlayStation 2 with the launch of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 in October 2001, well ahead of Sony's official online service.

Tony Hawk's Project 8 for the Xbox 360 will support up to eight players online, as well as other features over the Xbox Live service.

Publisher Activision was unable to offer comment at the time of writing.

Yeh, I suppos as long as they allow online patches, it could be worked into the game. Oh well, wasn't gonna get it anyway.

Steroyd would bother to post about this if he actually gave a shit about Tony Hawks after THUG 1. -_-

Buuut seeing as i'm here...

I guess Sony didn't see Neversoft important enough to give them final devs kits earlier.

There's a lot of things that don't seem very important to Sony.

e.g. Their customers.

Likewise. Although it still kinda sucks if you were interested in the game.

Something tells me Sony haven't quite sorted their online plans yet, or at least it's becoming obvious they're not as integral to the console as they perhaps should be. This is one instance where Sony SHOULD copy MS wholesale.

it does seem indicative of what might be happening in the near future with regard to Sony's online attempts (or rather the third-party developer's attempts).

With Live the developers have a trusted standard online platform that works and works well. There just isn't anything like that from Sony and that leads to different versions on the same game coming out i.e. one with online play (for the 360) and one without (for the PS3)

not having a dig at Sony, but they need to pull their finger out theor arse pronto

you do know this is a case of Neversoft not knowing what the online is like because Sony didn't give them the proper dev kits in time.

If we're going to use one game as an indication of the whole online service i could easily go b-b-b-b-but Resistance has 40 players online....

I seem to remember Rauper posting on the forum - it was something about how he'd heard from some people that Sony's online implementation was still very uncertain and up in the air.

Looks like those rumours were right.

Oh and Steroyd, Neversoft are pretty important to both Microsoft and Sony - the Tony Hawk games consistently sell by the bucket load. Proper online options have been one of the many things that fans of the series have been craving for ages. If you've got one version which does have online implementation and one that doesn't then which one are you going to buy?

Don't get me wrong, I'm one of those who loved the first three games and got quickly pissed off with them after number four; but the charts don't lie and there are still a whole load of people who are interested.

The guys behind Kane and Lynch said they had 15 or so dev-kits but still haven't figured out how to use the on-line thing.

One important point to take from this is that obviously the PS3 online element is not nearly as integrated into games as the 360 one. ALL 360 games have an online element whether that just be the achievements (which I for one really like - adds an extra dimension to a game being able to compare achievements with you mates) or full on online play.

I think that the PS3 games may be a less complete experience because of this. Unless of course the second batch of games are all fully online integrated.

No indication? That's a tad worrying.

I remember, a while back on Xbox 1, beta testing the European Xbox Live service, and even though it was still in its infancy, developers knew it was one integrated service around which they could build their games. The scope of which now allows games to be played over both Xbox and Xbox 360 on Live (Halo 2 etc...), and soon cross-platform (360/PC) through Live Anywhere (games like Shadowrun).

Thus, if Neversoft has no idea how the online components will work on PS3 does that mean that the online service for PS3 is an entirely seperate entity from the PS2 service....?

Tony Hawks 3 was out on PlayStation 2 with online play via a USB adaptor, which I had! And that was before XBox Live or any kind of hint of a PlaySTation 2 online service.

Yes, your blinkered defence of all things Sony has kept me amused for many a week. You are indeed a king among fanboys. I hope when you do get your PS3, (you are getting one right?), that it's everything you hoped for and more. But if there is anything a bit rubbish about your new toy, say for example, online game support, (god forbid!), then i'm sure that won't matter to you, because it's a Sony, teh best!!!1

I don't give a rats arse about Online support though I had enough fun on the PS2's online like i did on the PC....

Occasionally i dip into online gaming but it's not something I commit to...

Saying that i am looking forward to 40 player Resistance and 32 player Warhawk. :-)
That's all the online support i need.

And would you guys leave Steroyd alone, he's just providing you with his opinion, if you can't hand'le that then fine, just don't make it so obvious that you hate anyone who supports a rival console. There are more important things to hate people for you know? ;)

Oh yeh, let's wait till the PS3 is out to see how the online performs, previews of Resistance said the online performs perfectly, without tech issues. So as far as we know, Neversoft are simply clueless.

You don't need to look further than sony cameras and the software you get when you buy one to see how good sony are with software, not that good. To be completly honest, they suck.
Now they are claiming that theyr online system will defeat live, now wait a minute here. There is a big possibility that they won't be able to do that.
Sony has been full of shit the last years, E3 2005 compared with E3 2006 is all you need to see that.
There's no doubt that the will get a online service up and running, but i don't think it will be any good

Because it's the only title that Sony or Insomiac has actually released info for and technically it's impressive.

The game has already been beta tested with 40 players, and so far it's been solid. :)

I apologise that i'm pissed that Sony's delayed the PS3's launch what you want me to do go buy a Xbox 360 even though it'd be as useful as a doorstop to me?

I also apologise for Sony still supporting the PS2 and liking so many games that have yet to be launched on the PS2 from next week till Q1 2007 (that i know of).
And i'm also sorry for still buying PS2 games when i get my PS3.

Why wouldn't you enjoy playing on a non-Sony machine? Plz tell me I would like to understand!

Is it a "satanic drug thing?", your kinky Sony-affair?

Are you enjoying your online experince with Resistance with your PS3? I'm enjoying Saint's Row, it plays pretty well! You should give it a try, I'll try the PS3 when the price drops. I bet you have a lot of money to be able to play Resisntance today!!!

I just had a neat idea!!!Why don't you make a compilation of all your postsx here at EG and send to Sony ? I bet thay would give you a banana or even a letter with an official Sony stamp!! UAU!
