Neverwinter Nights 2 dated

Slight delay.

Neverwinter Nights 2 will ship on 20th October rather than in September, Atari said today.

"Given the sheer size and scope of Neverwinter Nights 2 and its 50 to 60-hour single player campaign, it was decided to move the global release date of Neverwinter Nights 2 out a month to late October," Atari said in a statement.

Neverwinter Nights 2 is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment. Like the original game, it includes a detailed editor for creating original campaigns in addition to a large single-player quest.

Apparently the extra month will be "invaluable" for "fine tuning and polishing of both the single and multiplayer experiences to ultimately deliver a game that exceeds the tremendous expectations of the Neverwinter Nights fanbase."

You can read more about NWN2 in our preview and in parts one and two of our extensive interview with Obsidian's Feargus Urquhart.

Hopefully the single-player in this will at least try to approach Baldur's Gate 2 standards, everyone always puffs about the multi in Neverwinter Nights but that aspect frequently leaves me cold.

Sorry guys, couldn't give a tinkers cuss about the MP aspect, 40-60 hours of SP goodness is what i want. Gimme.
    Please be good.

    Doubtful.

The original NwN suffered from the split from Interplay and Atari pushing the date to "as soon as possible.

Atari is in trouble now, NwN 2 lost its lead developer during development and looking at KotOR 2 rushed released it does not give much confidence over Obsidian doing anything but substandart rushed sequels.

yes, NWN2 lost a lead designer during development but former Black Isle studio veteran J.E. Sawyer is a lead designer on NWN2 now.

Yes, I want a decent single player game as well. Single player NWN was a total failure as a tactical game, and an even grander failure as a hack and slash.

Je Sawyer and Chirs Avellone are working on this. Both of them own me completley.
  • Drakron #7 6 years ago

J.E. Sawyer - I dont want to say this but he seens to have the death touch, IWD 2 was rushed to the point it hurt the game, neither Fallout 3 and Baldur's Gate 3 was released and he quit from Midway before Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows was released.

Chris Avallone - Is directly responsible for that mess (SW:KotOR2:TSL).

Hopefully this delay should prevent another KOTOR2 incident.

Former NWN2 lead designer Ferret Baudoin also worked on Baldur's Gate 3 and Fallout 3, then he left NWN2 before its completion. Is he better than Sawyer? Ferret is currently working on Dragon Age at Bioware. If you're right, Dragon Age will be cancelled?

I am not saying that I have not already said on other forums.

I have no trust in this game, it might be better that NwN but its not very hard be better that NwN ...

Chris Avellone is one of the most thoughtful and intelligent RPG designers out there. No bad words about him, please.

The state Atari's in I'm fearful of a) a rushed product without enough QA, and b) little or no post-release support.

a+b= the sound of me crying.

    Still, hope springs eternal.

Hopefully the single player campaign isn't as dull as the first NWN.
  • NegativeZero #14 6 years ago

I'm looking forward to this. Its predecessor was an excellent idea which was badly marred by its execution - everything felt far too bland and generic, especially with the way the levels were laid out in grids. When every cave and building looks like everything else, it gets boring.
  • reality_cheque #15 6 years ago

I quite enjoyed the first one as a hack and slash. Bit too easy though.

The beauty of NWN was in the mods - not the official campaign. I barely even played it single player.
  • mechamonkey #17 6 years ago

Cant wait for the NwN multiplayer sessions to pick up again, my group played the original every week for well over 2 years.

*sigh* I don't have any faith in any product released by Obsidian, honestly. They already torpedoed(alongside LucasArts) one of the best RPG franchises in recent years with KotOR2.

So I'm guessing more pseudo-mystique, incomplete plotlines and completely bland characters will be the flavour of NwN2.

I thought that KOTOR2 was a great game that was spoiled be the publisher rushing the release and then abandoning it without support. It did have some of the best NPCs i've seen in games for ages. I don't know how anyone can say people like Kreia, Atton, and Visas are bland????

The original NWN did have a dull single player mode but made up for that with a range of amazing mods. I only started playing them at the beginning of the year and have got 7 months of RPG goodness out of it. The quality of some of them is on par with professional RPGs.

I for one i'm glad they aren't rushing it this time.

Chris Avellone comes across as intelligent and thoughtful in any interview i've read with him(including a fairly recent rpgcodex one)
    Part 1
    Part 2
However, he has a bad history at being the lead in BIS games ;)

Sawyer on the other hand, comes across poorly as an rpg designer and his only credits are IWD(excluding being the web master for PS:T)

I just wish more from troika had joined obsidian, then I might have a bit more hope that they could come up with an iconic RPG again.

Disc: I'm well aware of what some of Obsidian's team members accomplished while under the Black Isle label; though the only one I hold in any regard is Planescape: Torment. I said I did not have any faith in them under the Obsidian label; to me it doesn't matter what they did as Black Isle: KotOR2 was still substandard beyond belief.
