Exclusive GTA IV content for PS3, too - source

Similar deal to Xbox 360's.

Microsoft could barely contain its glee at being able to confirm exclusive downloadable content for next year's Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV - but PS3 fans need not fear, as it seems the Sony release is also firmly in line to receive its very own dazzling additions.

According to a source close to Rockstar North, the team is working on exclusive supplemental content for both systems, which will be made available for download via Microsoft and Sony's respective online services after the game's release next year.

In case you missed it, Microsoft revealed at X06 that Xbox 360 owners will get "exclusive access to two downloadable, epic episodes of GTA IV via Xbox Live, each with hours of entirely new gameplay and available only on Xbox 360 just months after the release of the title".

We're told to expect much the same deal on PS3, except unique to the platform. Interestingly, the downloadable content, our source maintains, will take the form of brand new areas which will link into the main GTAIV game world.

"Think of the world as a large island - the new downloadable areas will be like smaller islands linking into it," the source explained. (Which is a structural analogy, rather than a suggestion that the game is set on an island, we hasten to add.)

How many additional areas or episodes Rockstar is planning is anyone's guess at this juncture, but it seems the game is at least being structured to accommodate a number of expansive new content releases in the weeks and months after release, while also satisfying platform holder - and console owner - demand for exclusive material.

Though with 'exclusive' being a somewhat elastic term these days, especially where Grand Theft Auto is concerned, we wouldn't be remotely surprised if you end up playing 'exclusive' 360 episodes on your PS3, and vice versa. One thing's for sure - there's nothing more certain to piss off the fanboys than a level playing field.

No formal response from Rockstar at the time of writing. But, as ever, don't expect official word until they're good and ready.

Grand Theft Auto IV is scheduled to release on Xbox 360 and PS3 in the US on 16th October 2007, with Europe getting hold of it just three days later.

    hmm lets bet the ps3 version will be like GTHD. You get your first safehouse on the disk and have to buy new areas...

    Anyway it sounds like bioth consoles will be getting different parts to add on to the core game, which means more reason for completists to buy both.

    Nah!! I was expecting the Xbox 360 to do that because of the limited disc space. ;)

    I'm still leaning on not buying GTIV because of GTA:SA.

    I always thought it was odd that only the 360 version of GTA 4 was getting downloadable content so it's nice to have clarification on the matter and, naturally, it's great news for any future PS3 only owners.

    Well you're heads going to be screwed with this announcement.

    Kind of makes me happy that i'm commiting myself to one and a half consoles this/next gen pissing around with exclusive content is just like the time when i had to choose between the Xbox Splinter Cell, the PS2 Splinter Cell and the Gamecube Splinter Cell (each with their own unique Content).

    I had an internal argument with myself for days... don't ever want to put myself in that position EVER AGAIN!!

    Definitely no point getting both console versions. You will still have to play through the 40+ hour main game to get to the new content. I mean are some of you seriously going to do that twice only to end up with a new mission or two?

    I mean did anyone get more than one version of Soul Caliber 2 just because of the different bonus characters in each version? I know I didn't. I got the cube version as it had link and that was that. I have a 360 so I'll get the 360 version of this if I can be arsed. I certainly am not paying 400+ quid for a new console to play the same games with maybe slightly worse/better graphics.

    What numpty would do that?

    As a 360 owner this news doesn't bother me, infact its good news I suppose. It will hopefully encourage more developers to take advantage of different machines with multiformat games.

    Though PS3 owners will have to pay £420 plus £40 for the game and a further fee for the download...I think there is only one loser in that scenerio.

    As for the news,I couldn't care less as I hate each and every GTA game with a passion,I really can't understand the appeal,yes the immersive sandbox nature of the latter titles in the series is lovely with sooo much to do and all that,but the general content and ''storylines'' of them surely only appeal to wannabe 14 year old gangsta chavs,and the game engines themselves in my opinion are facking awful :/

    So why did you buy a 360 then, all it has given us is Xbox quality games but with super shiny graphics and a worse Live system for online play...apparently next gen mean next gen quality LAG aswell!

    This news about PS3 content was obvious....Moore and his Xbox cronies are masters of bending the truth by using clever language skills, yes its marketing but does anyone else think its getting boring and tiresome now!?!?!?!

    adzz_78 : change your ISP, it's not the box's fault. If you insist on use your 56k modem your PS798 will still lag.
    About the games 360 brought that supposedly didn't bring nothing new, can be tue, but:
    PS3 games = ((360 ones + 10 quid) - rumble) + 1.5 years later

    From the 26 games I own none of them LAGS, wich game have you played on a 360 that does, if using a broadband connection ?
    oh, you don't own one..., that's what I thought.

    No, I'm not..., I'll be getting that one too, if it deserves my money.

    I'm so confused these days...what is actually constituting "Next Gen" games, if it isn't flashier graphics on a faster machine than the previous generation??

    Should we be expecting games controlled with our mind!? To be sucked into the telly and actually "be" in the game!? Or maybe its just to be fucked over, having to pay twice as much for the "new" gen as compared to the "old" gen?! (Incidentally, "old" stuff is sometimes referred to as antique...does that mean my XBox is now worth more than my 360 ;-)

    SO what, exactly when it comes down to it, is "Next Gen" suppose to be!??!?!?! Argh! I need a lie down...

    I think they were refferring to the Fifa '07 & PES 6 situation. Exclusive seems to be time based term these days. It was getting that way with GTA 3/VC/SA and Resi 4 last time around. This is not surprising news. Nor would an announcement of PS3 versions of Dead Rising and Lost Planet, or a 360 version of MGS4 be. There's a good argument for buying both machines, but for those who can't afford to patience should bring its own rewards.

And to put it simpler it will be much cheaper to play GTA IV and purchase content for it on a Xbox 360...feel free to correct me if I'm wrong or being bias in anyway. But thats just the way it is. If that makes you feel bad, well thats Sony's fault for making it hard not to critisise them. Get over it.

    The reason to have exclusive content is to get one up on your console opponent... There is no advantage given to either Sony or Microsoft therefore.

    Bioshock was always planned to come to PS3, but I think MS tied them in to an exclusive. But then again, what does the word exclusive mean these days? Not much, it seems. It's now just cynical froth to get the format warriors excited. Hilarious that a multi-format game can still evoke cheer from the partisan types with a couple of add-on packs.

    As for this GTA stuff, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if, after a tasteful pause, a special edition disc with BOTH sets of extra content is released for both machines.

    To exclusive content or to not exclusive content, that is the the question.

    Am I the only one who thinks that all this multi platform title/platform exclusive content is a cheap way to get the hardcore franchise fans to buy the game multiple times? Especially when it comes to 'episodic content'?

    Ms has an exclusive, but these days that means something like 6-12 months. I wouldn't be surprised to see something like that in a year time.

    Bodybuilder, I'm usually more accepting of other opinions when I'm in a good mood. When I'm angry I tend to get... 'narrow-minded' I guess would be the word for it. And don't worry - in about 2 hours I'll be in a good mood again and might post a nicer comment if I remember to.

    The content and game may be but the price of the console is where the difference is. Which is what I meant, it is cheaper to buy a Xbox 360 and play GTA IV than to do the same on a PS3.

    But your right its depends on PoV, mine being the PS3 is way over the price I would even consider paying for a console.
