N-Gage for £100?

Or £230 without the life-sapping contract.

Mobile network provider O2 is offering a Nokia N-Gage for £99.99 - if you're prepared to sign on the dotted line for an O2 Pay Monthly Online Tariff before noon on October 6th.

As part of the deal, the buyer also receives a few knickknacks, most notably a game-card holder (which is probably something of a pre-requisite given the size of the cards), screenwipe and £10-off-your-next-game voucher.

The Pay Monthly Online Tariff also includes 500 texts or 125 Media Messages per month depending on the precise package you go for, and you can expect to pay somewhere between £20 and £30 per month if you go for it.

If you're interested in subsidising the phone with a year's subscription to O2, then you're advised to call 0870 225 0208 and stake your claim to a pre-order. You can find more information on the deal by going to O2.co.uk and clicking on the annoying N-Gage pop-up [we can talk, eh? -Ed].

Or, if you'd prefer to just have the phone, you can get hold of it from various retailers, including Carphone Warehouse, who will let you have one for £229.99 (including Pandemonium), £254.99 (inc. Pandemonium and Tomb Raider) or £274.99 (inc. Pandemonium, Tomb Raider and Sonic N). As far as we can see, these are prices for the standalone phone.

Well. 20 quid a month... that's like 30 euros! A month! That or 250 quid? Methinks I won't be buying an N-Gage anytime soon.

Ah cumon, that's normal for what it is .... a mobile phone.

I actually think that's quite a good deal...try playing THS on my 8310!

Nower days 15-25 quid a month seems to be pretty standard fee here in sweden for new subscriptions. I remember when cell phones exploded on the market some years ago, you could get subscriptions for 8-9 quids a month AND you could use that money for calls as well.

My phone is a very old Motorola. It has no games at all. But this year so far it has only cost me..... £3.40! :-D

/pushes N-Gage back across the counter.

    No ta.

I presume the games are like £5 or something ? They could never charge more then that surely.
  • gamesb*tch #7 9 years ago

I don't think that's a fair assessment of the phone contract - the contract is in no way life sapping... the tariffs are competitive.
  • presh #8 9 years ago

hmm, just under that magic £100 price point.... I think it will actually sell at that price - not too sure how many people will fork out £35 for a game though.

I thought Nokia were saying at E3 there was going to be no subsidising the retail price? The operators must be really hoping people spend a lot of money on phonecalls for this one...

There is (as always with nokia) and they repeated it at ECTS. The contractor looks at the £250 for the 12 month subscription and decides to give you "100 off the price of the phone. That is normal, in fact the subscriptiojn nGAge fits in to the normal premium nokia phone segment. A good quality color and camera phone will be just the saem but you don't get the chance to buy games for it.

Meh, I'd only even consider getting one if it was free with the contract, but I'd rather get a decent phone instead, eg my T610, which was free.

I think this seems like quite a good deal. Admittedly you could accuse me of bias (I work for Nokia), but still this stacks up to most high end smartphones and the like quite reasonably.
  • Cyhwuhx #12 9 years ago

.::: Me thinks N-Gage needs to get some decent games. One handheld for rehashes is enough in my pockets.
  • Blerk #13 9 years ago

TipTop, you're still the only person in the whole world who thinks this is exciting. Good luck to you! :-)

Fruit Polos? Woooooooow! I'll buy ten packets! Whooooo!
  • Nemesis #15 9 years ago

Fruit polos! Always bloody stuck together so you got 4 colours at once and some free non-edible paper that you could never get off the damn sweet.

  • StixxUK #16 9 years ago

How about those jelly polos eh?

Sure, they weren't real polos, and they didn't last long enough, but they were pretty yummy. Kinda reminiscent of those jelly blob things I used to buy from Woolies (sweet wonderland). Also, what happened to Fizzy Jerkz while we're on the subject of polo-esque sweets?

Well I have played Pandemonium and Tomb raider on the N-Gage. Both absolute bobbins in my opinion.

But Prince of persia on my Nokia 6100? Genius. And only £2.50
  • skybluesam86 #18 9 years ago

Is it just me, or will it actually be quite hard to judge how well the N-Gage is taken up? There will surely be loads of techno-junkies, who just have to have the latest gadget, so won't that mislead somewhat, when overall figures are given?

I just realised, that's what game sales are for.

Not me, by 2008 I'll have one of those 5G holographic video phones...just like in Star Wars....Oh, but since its digital there won't be any interference as I call across the Galaxy....
