SEGA's Leipzig line-up News

PC PlayStation 2 PSP Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Tom Bramwell

17 August, 2006

SEGA will field a strong line-up of playable titles at next week's Leipzig Games Convention and has also revealed the final name for Sonic's Nintendo Wii offering.

Let's deal with that first, then. Having previously gone by the working title of Sonic Wild Fire, we're now told that it will be called Sonic and the Secret Rings.

It along with Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz, SEGA's other confirmed Wii title, will be playable behind closed doors much as they were at E3, as will PS3 versions of Virtua Tennis 3, SEGA Rally, Sonic The Hedgehog and Full Auto 2.

Out in the open though, you'll still be able to see a number of titles, including Medieval II: Total War, 360 versions of Sonic and Virtua Tennis, Phantasy Star Universe, Yakuza on PS2 and the PSP take on Sonic Rivals.

The full line-up:

  • Medieval II: Total War (PC)
  • Sonic The Hedgehog (Xbox 360, PS3)
  • Sonic and the Secret Rings (Nintendo Wii)
  • Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Nintendo Wii)
  • Virtua Tennis 3 (Xbox 360, PS3)
  • SEGA Rally (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
  • Yakuza (PS2)
  • Phantasy Star Universe (PS2, PC, Xbox 360)
  • Full Auto 2: Battlelines (PS3)
  • Charlotte's Web (PC, GBA, Nintendo DS)
  • Sonic Rivals (PSP)

Sonic and the Secret Rings

What a terrible name! Almost Lucas-esque.

They should've called it "Sonic Wiild Fire".

they could have at least called it "Sonic: The Secret Rings" instead of adding the 'and' and therefore making it sound like a kids game.

Yeah, its not like Sonic the Hedgehog is aimed at the younger market or anything.

they could have called anything else to make it sound less like a game about bum rape.

Isn't it time that the Monkey Ball name was left to die?

I've got plenty of time for monkeys in games, but the pedigree of the SMB games has gone down and down. I'd have been tempted to rename it.

I *really* *really* cant wait to get my hands on SEGA Rally for the 360.

I still have my original SEGA Saturn console, only games I kept were Rally and Daytona.

Please SEGA - Give us a DAYTONA 360... i'll cut my right arm off for it.

Full Auto 2 for PS3 only? PS3 can keep it, tbh.

Sounds Enid Blyton-esque - new characters Timmy the Dog and George the Human - and when George collects 100 ginger beer cans he can slow down time - think I need a bit more sleep...

And secret rings? Has noone told Sonic what he's been collecting for the past 15-odd years?

So it's looking like consumers won't be able to get their hands on most next-gen titles at Leipzig. I'm interested to see how much floor space Nintendo and Sony are going to dedicate to playable Wii and PS3 titles.

When I noticed they were showing Sega Rally for PS3 I thought for a moment I had a reason to get a PS3. then I noticed it was coming for the 360, excellent. Very much looking forward to that.

What happened to the new Afterburner though?

Gamespot have some new footage of Full Auto 2 and surprisingly it looks quite a lot more fun with the environmental damage having some effect on gameplay.

Virtua Tennis 3 needs to be on the Wii. Seriously, not making a Wii version is just plain stupid. It's the best tennis game out there and the Wiimote is just a given for tennis games.

Sega aren't dumb, they could manage the whole "new control scheme development" without too many problems.

I read Gamespot's Full Auto 2 preview and was baffled at how many of the things AREN'T new but the Gamespot person only now noticed them because they were pointed out.

You could always shoot stuff to block off your opponents and you could always click the right stick to fire your weapons. In fact, it was always a pretty cool game but people never got past the weak presentation and framerate issues.

Oh dear. Sonic Wild Fire is such a better name. And Banana Blitz for Wii as well.

And whats this Yakuza?, haven't heard much about it.

Yakuza is a very Shenmue-esque game about, er, yakuza. It was called Ryuga Gotoku in japan and it's headed up by the Monkey Ball guy. It got 10,10,9,9 in famitsu, a point worth noting.

The one thing that bugs me about Sonic is unlike it's bitter rival Mario, he hasn't grown with his audience. Mario in recent years has even ripped the piss out of itself, very successfully I might add, and has found a way to exist in harmony with the rapidly maturing market - by not taking itself so damn seriously. Which is sadly what Sonic does - the series takes itself far too seriously and has not really grown with those of us who were there on the ol' Mega Drive. And it's just getting boring, bland and immature.

I have high hopes for an amazing comeback for Sonic. But on the strength of the title... and the not-so-hot Heroes... my heart longs for it but my head knows that it's not going to happen...

I agree with Sonic not maturing. The audience that grew up with Sonic is getting old now, there's potential to be tapped. With every new Sonic game, the problem with it game is blindingly obvious, yet somehow, Sonic Team just can't see it. We're sitting there going, "DON'T DO KNUCKLES' EMERALD FINDING LEVELS, THEY'RE SHIT!" and what do they do? Make twice as many for the next game.

And Sonic and the Secret Rings.. sounds like a fucking Harry Potter title.
