3D Realms confirms Prey 2

Concerns to be addressed.

Just a few weeks after the release of PC and Xbox 360 shooter Prey, 3D Realms' Scott Miller has confirmed that a sequel is already in development.

Speaking in an interview with Next-Gen, when asked what he's working on these days, Miller replied: "Prey 2, of course!"

So what have we got to look forward to next time around? Well, Miller wasn't very forthcoming, but he did say: "We are addressing concerns about combat, as well as adding in more gameplay innovations." Which sounds nice.

This isn't the first time 3D Realms has suggested that a sequel is on the way. As we reported last month, a message at the end of the first game reads: "Prey will continue" - so it comes as little surprise to learn that it is indeed, er, continuing.

Here's hoping that Prey 2 won't take quite as long to get here as the first game, though - which was first announced back in 1997.

more mystical powers would be good, I did enjoy the first game, and it could be longer.
Keep up the huge areas and the flying bits were alot of fun.

No more repetitive, organic corridors, thanks.

Sort them enemies out! Shooting emotionless ragdolls is getting old.

The combat needs a BIG improvement. Enemies fell into one of 3 categories:

1 - Melee enemies who charge at you.
2 - Flying enemies who were given a rocket launcher to present a challenge, hiding the lack of any decent AI.
3 - On foot enemies who just stood still and fired, occasionally...gasp...sidestepping.

I quite enjoyed Prey, but imo the combat was totally uninspired and forgettable.

Prey 2 will be out for PC and Xbox 960 in the year 2015.

Prey 2 will be out around the same time as DNF.

Drop the doom 3 engine for a start.
  • penhalion #8 6 years ago

Yep loose that doom 3 engine it makes everything that uses it look shiny and plastic. Would have done better to use the source engine from Valve. Though that has a nasty sound skip bug that persists dispite two patches. Er try sorting out your threads guys...it aint difficult to cache sound while you read other data from disk!

The game was ok. But mediocre, it become boring after a while and repetitive. I think if the game had been much longer I would have just traded it in before finishing. A disspointing game that had been getting too much hype.

As far as that Doom engine. The game did seem as if it was just an extension of Doom 3 and Quake 4, just differnt characters.

I wont be buying Prey 2

1 on their list should be: making sure Tommy doesn't look like a twat this time.

Oh and yeah, I mean that in the literal sense - he really does look like a twat.

I wasn't really all that impressed with Prey, to be honest. I thought the graphics were rubbish, and I blame that on the Doom 3 engine, which I thought was extremely lacklustre on the PC and Xbox, and just can't hack next-gen graphics. It did have some nice gameplay elements though.
  • Talha #12 6 years ago

Well I will jump on the bandwagon and blame the Doom III engine. But hey, that's not where ALL the blame should go. I am not a tech aware guy, so I cannot say how the engine limits the games built on it.

The devs were complacent (or more likely, strapped for time) and couldn't take an excellent premise and potentially rich backstory to its limits. It was disappointing to the point that I don't even want a Prey 2.

And honestly, who does? Not even those who liked the game.

I am playing through Prey at the moment and enjoying the organic nature of the game i.e. the intestinal feel to the ship, the crawlers as grenades, the way that the zoom on the hunter rifle is an eye ball connection rather than a scope. It had good ideas (and I actually thought it looked quite nice too, don't really mind the Doom 3 engine myself but I'm no specialist...) but the AI was really poor. Although I haven't tried it I've heard the online is lacklustre with rather generic maps but personally I don't buy this sort of game for the multiplayer. I buy rather to get immersed in a different world and Prey did that quite well for me - I would definitely consider getting Prey 2.

Strange I'm clearly the only one who likes the Doom 3 engine. Nice shadowing and solidity to the environments...Source engine has some nice features but graphically it isnt as good.

"I think if the game had been much longer I would have just traded it in before finishing. A disspointing game that had been getting too much hype."

I've heard it's not partiularly long but as I haven't finished it...

It did get quite a bit of promotion and marketing but I just appreciated having a relatively decent game during the summer drought. I don't think it would have been noticed half as much during Xmas/Easter.

"Strange I'm clearly the only one who likes the Doom 3 engine. Nice shadowing and solidity to the environments...Source engine has some nice features but graphically it isnt as good."

Agreed - Source is better at cheating, but actual quality is not as good.
  • Talha #17 6 years ago

Hey, graphically the Doom 3 engine is still spectacular - I will agree with @Wonder that there is a solidity to environments and objects, like they were actually made of metal or rock as opposed to the occasional papery feel you can get during HL2. But the real beef here is that Doom engine (apparently) doesn't allow for too many enemies at once (a fact conceded by the Prey team), and doesn't offer many diverse gameplay possiblities.

    Great ! Loved Prey.

Wonder if the movie plans will come to anything ?
  • spongebob #20 6 years ago

Prey was surprisingly inspired for a FPS game. But I don't get the Doom 3 engine. Does it make all games that use it look alike?
  • PearOfAnguish #21 6 years ago

It's too shiny, I much prefer the gritty, realistic look of Source. It depends on the game though, I can't see Doom 3 working in Source and vice versa.
  • Freek #22 6 years ago

I think the problem with the Doom engine is that who ever uses it, for some unknown and possibly mysteriouse reason also copies over the Doom art style.
Stop doing that and the "it's just Doom 3 again" criticism will go away.

Euhm, I thought it was the intention to make him look like a loser, hell, how else would you describe a geek like Gordon Freeman? Prey has good things and bad things, I hope they build further on the multiplayer which pretty much gave a new life to classic DM gameplay imo.
  • NthSimulachum #24 6 years ago

    Blah....

    *goes back to Quake 1*
  • ProtoformX #25 6 years ago

I actually loved Prey. The issue with the Doom 3 engine is that it only seems to really "do" mechanical or flesh textures. The earthen textures of the spirit world looked a bit odd.
Whilst, the game was short, it was good fun for me and I think I shall definately consider getting Prey 2.
  • jamesbee #26 6 years ago

I too like the Doom 3 engine. It looks much more impressive than the blank corridors of FEAR. As mentioned, there is a solid look to everything and a huge number of shapes and curves. My biggest gripe is the combat in all the games that have used it has been really poor.

Why do all the guns sound utterly useless and wimpy? FEAR captures the power perfectly. That’s the feeling I want, not ratta ratta tat tat and down they go. I have enjoyed it but it's not a keeper and would have been a rental had it not been a present from my girlfriend. After the hopeful look in her face when I opened it I didn't want to say "erm, I had actually planned to rent that".

  • smelly #27 6 years ago

TBH i've not gotten around to playing prey yet.

I've kinda gotten piss bored with fps games.

They all seem to be just pretty graphics tech demos with gameplay shoved in at last minute.

Why is 3d Realms not working on getting Duke Nukem Forever done instead? Apparently, it is still actually being worked on.
  • WrongShui #29 6 years ago

    Source engine?

Take a step, load, turn, load, shoot a guy, load, die and reload.
  • Talha #30 6 years ago

@WrongShui: That pretty much describes almost every FPS known to man, no?
