Silent Hill 5 coming to next gen News

PlayStation 2 GameCube Xbox
News by Tom Bramwell

17 August, 2004

The fifth episode of the gruesome Silent Hill series was confirmed today, but is being designed with next generation console hardware in mind.

During an interview to be published later this week, chief designer of the game Masashi Tsuboyama admitted that the title is already being planned for next generation machines, although Konami has yet to decide which one.

Asked if there would be a further Silent Hill game after the release of The Room, out next month on PS2, Xbox and PC, Tsuboyama-san first clarified rumours that it would not be called 'Shadows', but was happy to confirm that there would be ongoing adventures in the series.

"One website said we are creating a fifth [Silent Hill] called Shadows - we don't know where they got their information from; obviously it's not Shadows that we are creating, but we are creating the next one.

"We're not sure which hardware we will put [it out on], but [it will be] on the best one, be it PS3, be it Xbox 2... It won't be on the current consoles," he confirmed.

The news therefore means that The Room will be the last game in the series for some time, with next gen machines not expected to be released until some point in 2006.

Meanwhile, responding to criticism that The Room is too action-focused at the expense of puzzle solving, he retorted: "I don't take that as a negative. That was the concept all along."

Check back later this week for the full interview, or read our in depth review of The Room here.

I wonder if that's a Tecmo or Squeenix "[it will be] on the best one" ;D

Zero Beat,

Tecmo are not actually very loyal - they always just whore themselves out to the highest spec machine. having said that, i was half expecting them to port DoA to gamecube - dont know if microsoft have bribed them in order to keep a loose grip on the asian market or if they just dont think they'll sell enough copies.

but i bet you £10 they'll jump ship onto PS3 in the next generation.

Tecmo weren't Xbox-exclusive in this generation anyway - just the Dead or Alive franchise and it's associated spin-offs. All their other stuff (Project Zero/Fatal Frame, Monster Rancher, etc.) has been on PS2 first, if not exclusively.

I'd speculate that the Xbox-only decision on DOA was based a lot more on money hats than on technical specifications, though. They'd shove DOA3, XBV and NG onto every platform going if their Microsoft contract would let them, I'm sure - especially XBV, which would sell a storm in Japan on the PS2 despite the boobs having jaggies and the come-to-bed eyes being lower resolution.

(Hell, there's probably a Japanese *word* for "badly aliased tit fetish"...)

I meant Team Ninja, and by Team Ninja I meant best one - most powerful as opposed to Squeenix best one - best selling. Oh well, cocked that up.

From that I presume it'll appear on both - he carefully worded it to please both sets of fanboys. :-)

I'm happy for the series to take a bit of a break - I think 'yearly' updates always dilute the quality of a series. I'd much rather have the next one 'when it's done' than 'in time for Christmas'.

I'm not sure if Silent Hill 5 is needed at all, unless they revolutionize the game or something, like Resident Evil 4. I mean, Resi started long before, and already Silent Hill have catched up on the number of titles?

The weird thing though, is that the games are all quite alike, unlike Resi 1 -> Resi 2 -> Resi 3 and then Resi 4. All these were pretty different.

I'm not a Resident Evil fanboy, and I love the SH series. But unless they really do something special for SH5, it won't be necessary, as I haven't even had much interest in SH4 or half of SH3. Resi 4 will be the next step for me anyway.

The trouble is, I don't think there is another series that has quite the feel of SH at it's best - Not action based but unnerving psychological weirdness...

I hope it's more scary than the, well, not very scary Silent Hill 4: The Room. I thought it was more 'Eugh, look at that'. If you get what I mean.

Ecks - yes, and i don't agree with "silent hill 4 has nothing to do with silent hill" bit either.

the more i play it the more terrifying it becomes - the idea about the room is wicked genius, imagine a mix of hitchcock's "rear window", polanski's "the tenant" (best psycho/horror/drama ever!) and the original "silent hill"!

in the middle the monters were kinda silly and harmless, but the wheelchairs were pure inspired lunacy!

right now the ghosts have invaded the room and i have stopped playing to calm down...

my opinion it is all about which company can make the most money. Loyalty is thrown out of the window. capcom is a good example IMHO. look how they played the GC owners.. telling them that RE is gonna be exclusive to their console and that also goes for Viewtiful Joe as another example. Then when they (capcom) realise that they are not going to make any huge profits, what do they do. Release it in the console equivalent of a cash cow.... the PS2! Gamers remember this there are very few companies that will stay loyal. for the rest, it is all about the £ and the $.

Funny thing is Azmol01, that originally Silent Hill (That is, the first one) was actually a lot BETTER than the Resi games of the time. It was, and to some extent still is, a fantastic game which they got totally right. Even down to the "Star Wars" Ending, it was just great.

Thing is, REmake, RE0 and RE4 are very recent titles. For me, Resident Evil 3 is still very easily the best in the traditional series (Because if you weren't laughing at Nemesis, you were watching for a camera-angle change to hover above Jill... mmm... cleavage...). RE3 kept me busy for a VERY long time... well into the life of the PS2, put it that way. RE4 is a great fantastic game as well, but of a different type...

Silent Hill needs as much a kick up the arse as Capcom game RE4. Yes, it DOES need to change. We'll see. Wasn't THAT long ago people said the Resident Evil series was gonna be swallowed by Silent Hill... how times change...

... and for anyone who wants alternatives, I suggest Project Zero, Project Zero II: Crimson Butterfly and the vastly underrated ObsCure, as well as Forbidden Siren for those wanting something different. There're some great little horror titles out there... don't get caught up in REvsSH... you'll miss some real beauties...

Resi Remake and Resi Zero are only better graphically because they use pre-rendered graphics rather than being fully polygon-based. As games, Silent Hill knocks them into a cocked hat. Whatever one of those is.

I hope Silent Hill doesn't follow Resi 4's route. Although Resi 4 is exceptionally highly rated, the combat in Silent Hill was always a necessary evil rather than the main point of the game. I wouldn't like to see SH lose the puzzles and aim for the 'action' like Resi has.

Edit: Kami, you seen the stuff about Siren 2 on IGN today?
