15 PS3 launch games - Hirai

Comments follow criticism.

SCEA boss Kaz Hirai has said that he expects around 15 software titles to launch with the PlayStation 3 this November, responding to comments from publishers criticising the firm's slow release of information to developers.

Speaking to business news service website Bloomberg, Hirai cited the 15 title figure and said, "I don't think there will be too much of an issue," with regard to software availability at the launch of the system.

However, publisher bosses including Sega of America's Simon Jeffrey and THQ's Brian Farrell were both open in their criticism of Sony's treatment of PS3 developers so far, with Jeffrey telling Bloomberg that "there certainly will not be a lot of titles available" at launch.

According to Jeffrey, "a lot of developers" have not received development kit hardware from Sony yet - although final development hardware is meant to be shipping out this month - while Farrell claimed that THQ is not developing The Sopranos for PS3 because it's "too risky" due to the lack of final hardware specifications.

Other publishers, however, disagreed with Jeffrey and Farrell's comments - with executives at Activision, EA and Ubisoft all weighing in to support Sony's development support strategy to date.

EA Worldwide Studios boss Paul Lee said that the firm is "happy" with the dev kits sent out so far, while Activision CEO Robert Kotick told Bloomberg that although their systems are not "final, final hardware", "we know what the processors' capacity is - we have active development underway."

Kotick added that he doesn't expect that the first titles launched for the PS3 will take advantage of more than a fifth of the capacity of the machine, however, stating that "this is the most sophisticated piece of consumer hardware ever."

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot agreed with Kotick's sentiments, but compared the situation at this point to the same point six months out from the launch of the Xbox 360 last year. "We won't be able to take advantage of all the components of the [PlayStation 3]," he commented, "but it was the same last year."

    Sounds AWESOME!!

Call me a fanboy, but doesn't this sound better than the 360's original Line up?
  • captainrentboy #4 6 years ago

And people criticised the 360 launch line up?Out of those above exclusive titles,2 of them apeal to me,bloody two!
  • L0cky #5 6 years ago

Reminds me of the 360 launch list. Not much of interest to me.

Of those others, if they are early releases then Sonic and Splinter Cell peak my interest, but they'll be available on 360 at the same time.

Heavenly Sword, I need more info on gameplay.
  • login_name #6 6 years ago

That's a pretty poor release list. Ridge is the only title I would buy, Heavenly Sword would be a maybe(ish). The rest are just as crap as the current 360 games, PGR3, RR (i'm a sucker for them games) and ESIV excluded.

Splinter Cell will be out on both so that doesn't really count and Sonic has been going down hill since SA2.

  • Yossarian #7 6 years ago

the original 360 launch list announced was pretty spiffy too (included GRAW and Oblivion, for instance), but in the end two or three of its best titles were staggered out until as many as five months later
  • Razz #8 6 years ago

    OOOooooooo... 15 games :/

    What was Nintendo's again? :)
  • spazmo #9 6 years ago

You can be certain of 1 thing. EA will have games ready for launch. Although 'ready' is used loosely.
  • login_name #10 6 years ago

EA have had their 'games' ready for a good few years now. Doesn't take too long to implement a txt update.
  • thinktank #11 6 years ago

I like the way the 360 gets GTA4 as their "steal" and PS3 gets Full auto 2,

    Seams like a fair deal.

Maybe we can swap gears of war for crash bandicoot.

  • Stormflood #12 6 years ago

I have to admit that I was a little more excited for the 360 launch games.... well, until I actually played PDZ.

Looks like I'll have time to save up for the really good games after I buy PS3!

  • jaxon58 #13 6 years ago

I count many sevens in that list.
  • Xerx3s #14 6 years ago

15 games? Lets say 10 of em actually make it. Seems about right.

"Call me a fanboy, but doesn't this sound better than the 360's original Line up?"

Not really. The only title to me that looks interesting is Heavenly sword.

Full auto 2? Just an update of the crappy 360 version then? Ridge Racer 7? RR 6.5 surely? And wasnt madden an 360 exclusive now (or was that another yankee sports title, they all seem the same to me)? Splinter Cell isnt an exclusive either, nor is Sonic. And FNR3? Lol?

Anyway, Launch lineups are never that interesting imo. Its usually what follows in the next 6-12 months thats far more interesting.
  • Beano #15 6 years ago

No Sopranos for PS3?... ooohh noooo.... who gives a f**k?

    ;)
  • myiagros #16 6 years ago

all they said about madden is that the 360 version would be the only HD version you could buy on day 1. the ps3 version will be there for launch a couple of months later.

Splinter Cell: DA, Sonic, Fight Night 3 and Ridge Racer are all confirmed to be on PS3.

They have said heavenly sword will be there shortly after the console release.

    I'll take a '0' please bob.

Sorry but the only exclusive PS3 title that interest me so far is Heavenly Sword.
Sonic, Splinter Cell and CoD 3 I would rather get for the 360 seeing as it already has an establised Live service that actually works.

  • Scimarad #22 6 years ago

I'm a big fan of the original Warhawk so I'm definitely interested in this one and as I said elsewhere I'd probably buy Resistance if it was out on the 360. I just like idea of 'alternate 1950's UK invaded by aliens'.

    Nothing mind-blowing there, certainly.

Sounds like bull. Or do I automatically think "lie" when it is from Sony?
  • BartonFink #24 6 years ago

Absolutely nothing remotely interesing on that list provided by myiagros. Makes the 360 list look positively brilliant (it wasn't). Then again Sony are not renound for their launch titles. No amazing exclusives and we can get most of anything that's interesting on 360 anyway (with a proven online system).

    +1

Heavenly sword looks very nice, but i wont buy a ps3 for one game. Not really interested in Sonic & SC (not gonna buy it on the 360 either, sonic should be 2d & im not a fan of stealth games). And MS gives me everything i want from an online service with live (im not really interested in things other than XBLA, MP & demo's), unless sony gets a very good (then im talking halo franchise lvl) online fps, is see no reason to switch. Its not like 29 € for a years worth of XBL Gold + a free game (worth 29 €) keep me up at night...
  • Darren #26 6 years ago

@Myiagros - Seeing as over half of those games will also be available on the Xbox 360, a machine I own, it leaves me with a much reduced selection to choose from from the PS3. Of the rest, only Resistance: Fall of Man and Heavenly Sword appeal to me but so long as they're 100% finished games and not half-finished, lacking in feature or buggy like 75% of the Xbox 360's launch lineup then I'd be happy with them. At least they're new IPs not stale old franchises...
  • Darren #27 6 years ago

Oh I didn't see Warhawk. Add that to my list to make three games! :)
  • myiagros #28 6 years ago

@Darren - this is just a list i have made up from what has been said by publishers, hopefully a few other exclusive titles will make it, and as metioned probably a few others from from EA.

    possible early titles (guesses):

    Half Life 2 (apparently)
    The Darkness
Virtua Fighter 5 (the arcade version is done so..)
    Stranglehold
    Rayman Raving Rabits
    Tony Hawks Project 8
    WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2007
    Shadowclan
    Rainbow Six Vegas
    World Snooker Championship 2007

I'd say of those 15, about 5 will be available on the 360 around the same time

They'll probably have 3 Buzz Games, a Singstar game and that Hi-Def GT game to boost the numbers :p
  • pac666 #31 6 years ago

for most, given the reaction Sonys received since E3
  • Xerx3s #37 6 years ago

    Lets see...
Half Life 2 (apparently) - Already on the xbx & pc, hardly call a 2 year old game exclusive. Besides, MS & valve have announced that they are working on several key franchises. ...
The Darkness - Not an exclusive, this has been announced for the 360 sinse...err, forever.
Virtua Fighter 5 (the arcade version is done so..)
Stranglehold - If this is and exclusive, how come im looking at the trailer on XBLM?
Rayman Raving Rabits - So far, this has been announced for every platform (inc the ps2) except the ps3. (according to ign)
Tony Hawks Project 8 - If this is and exclusive, how come im looking at the trailer on XBLM?
WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2007 - IGN says its 360 as well
Shadowclan - IGN says its 360 as well.
Rainbow Six Vegas - If this is and exclusive, how come im looking at the trailer on XBLM?
World Snooker Championship 2007 - IGN says its 360 as well.

So that leaves you with just VF. Check your facts.
  • myiagros #38 6 years ago

"when the PS3 launches you gonna be able to get Wii with Zelda"

i'll probably get Zelda on gamecube and wait to see if the Wii is a viable product over the long term, after the novelty has worn off.
  • myiagros #39 6 years ago

@Xerx3s - i never said that any of these were exclusive titles, just that these were some titles PS3 owners can expect to see near to the console release. I am fully aware that many of thee titles are coming out on multiple formats.
  • thinktank #40 6 years ago

Lets not forget Gears of war, the slated released date for that seems mighty close to the release date of the PS3

Personally i'd have more fun on that £40 game than the £500+ you would end up paying for the PS3 and its friends.

Also has any one considered that MGS4 could very well come out on 360, albeit a few months down the road, Kanomi are third party and they did it with MGS2. M$ should have a 10 million + user base by then, they are in to make money after all.

Best start buttering up those Kanomi fat cats M$

I won't even consider buying a PS3 until Gran Turismo 5 (or whatever they decide to call it) is released, assuming it's streets ahead of Forza 2 that is.

@FornburyLion I won't even consider buying a PS3 until Gran Turismo 5 (or whatever they decide to call it) is released, assuming it's streets ahead of Forza 2 that is.
    But they haven't finished 4 yet ;)
I would not be expecting that particular title for at least a year and a half to 2 years.

Should be very interesting to see what they can do with it on the PS3 though. Maybe they might add a bit of AI and damage modeling in that one.

MGS4 is definitely NOT coming to 360. Kojima said that MGS is a playstation franchise. (rather strangely considering the ports)
  • thinktank #46 6 years ago

therefore haven't you just dismissed your own comment jediMasterMalik

To my knowledge MG has appeared on (discounting older generations or handhelds):

    PS2
    Xbox
    PC
    Gamecube

Hardly a Playstation exclusive franchise, don't get me wrong I’m sure Sony will have it as an exclusive for an initial time period but Kanomi need to get back those development costs.........

  • myiagros #48 6 years ago

i asume he said this as of all the formats the games have appeard on, the playstation machines are the only ones on which you can play the entire series.

He also said on his blog it could easily be done on a 360...

Yes, he did mention that the demo would have a little bit of less detail here and there, but it would look practically the same on X360 hardware.
  • thinktank #58 6 years ago

    which blog is this??
  • drumbaby #59 6 years ago

Why would it have less detail on Xbox 360 than PS3?
  • Calgon #60 6 years ago

It wouldnt he never said that IIRC... he said there would be minor differences between the way they looked, trust me the 360 would have no problems with that game they could probably even have more AA and HDR, that would sure upset a few fanboys.

I expect Sony are working on damage control after the amount of people that are doubting their claims of super powerfull made it clear to them, they aint buying into that one again(already forgot the PS2 launch claims? Untapped potential comments again for the next 5 years then?.. *sigh*)

they could probably even have more AA and HDR

How come? Is the Xbox 360 more powerful than the PS3?

"Kotick added that he doesn't expect that the first titles launched for the PS3 will take advantage of more than a fifth of the capacity of the machine, however, stating that "this is the most sophisticated piece of consumer hardware ever.""

1/5th, thats' only 20% of the capacity of the PS3.

It will be exiting to see how the PS3 developes the next few years.
  • #63 6 years ago

@Calgon "(already forgot the PS2 launch claims? Untapped potential comments again for the next 5 years then?.. *sigh*) "

I do not think that Sony's claims about the PS2 being an überly powerful console, at the time, was a lie. The hardware was surely awsome for the time.

If a game like Shadow of the Colosuss or God of War or Burnout Legends was displayed in the year 2000, people would most certainly agree with Sony about their claims. Hell, the PS2 even deliveres impressive games today, more than six years after launch!

I think the same will be the case for the PS3, it will have a long lifespan. I do not think the X360 will have such a long life, MS will have to release a more powerfull console earlier than Sony. At least I think this is a likely senario.

Personally, I think that launch is one of the worst ever and I'm not even trying to troll. Pretty similar to the PS2 launch then when oh, Smuggler's Run and SSX were the best things along with Fantavision.

At least I won't feel I'll be missing out because I can't afford it.
  • foxy2006 #69 6 years ago

Surely the most unappealing launch proposal in history.
  • #70 6 years ago

Is that because most devs don't even have a dev kit yet? :p
  • Calgon #71 6 years ago

Drumbaby - Stronger GPU in many respects, as far as AA and HDR go? Smart eDRAM sure does save on those bandwidth intensive tasks and will prove to be a big help to 360 developers.

Hansi320 anything the PS2 could put out could have been matched with a GF2 and decent CPU by the time it reached here... how is that awesome for its time? Compared to the PSone maybe it was a significant step up but they went further than that with their claims and talked utter BS frankly.

For my money, Blu Ray is no where near worth the same as an XBOX 360 & Nintendo Wii. For me a PS3 will be worth considering once it reaches a sub £200 price point and has a library of games divergent enough to separate it from the other two platforms.

We'll see what exclusive titles actually make launch, but after E306 I don't hold much hope of any of them being anything more than mediocre.
    Edited by 1 at 18/05/06 @ 11:11
  • TheSaint #74 6 years ago

Lets face it maybe Blu Ray will be better than HD-DVD but if it is then I am going to buy a stand alone Blu Ray player to watch the movies.

Who actually uses the PS2 as a DVD player? The quality is terrible compared to even a cheap stand alone player.

    Stupid fanboy fantasies.......

    Dull - Dull - Dull

Fight Night 3 ? don't make me laugh. That wont look 'next-gen' come Q4 '06...

I think i'd rather have a single copy of Gears of War on 360 than all those 'supposed' launch titles.

I'm not going to waste my hard earned on a PS3 - mind, I could have told you that last year ;)
  • SergioAguero #79 6 years ago

"And PES6 should be out in November and has been announced everywhere but the PS3, unless this is the same version (so confusing) as WE2007 that's being released in January 2007, again not announced on PS3."

PES6 on xbox360 in October. No date announced for PS3. If it was a launch game it would maybe have sold me on the sony machine, but frankly why pay the extra £120 for a version hardly superior?
  • rhinoxious #80 6 years ago

I doubt half the games on that list will be out in time for release.

Sony must put out games that at least as good, and preferably look better, than the current crop of 360 games, and from what i saw of the E3 coverage, they are nowhere near doing that by november.

It will sell out because of a massive installed playstation fan base, but I very much doubt anyone will be able to come up with a cogent argument for paying the £500+ neccesary on day of release for a basic console/game/extra pad/AV lead setup.

The again there was little to justify buying a 360 on day one as well from that point of view.
  • Eighthours #81 6 years ago

    Sounds AWESOME!!

Call me a fanboy, but doesn't this sound better than the 360's original Line up?

If all those games make it, then I think so. One caveat though, the likes of Perfect Dark Zero making the 360 launch sounded exciting a year ago!
  • SlackMaster #82 6 years ago

Who cares about MGS now anyway? I used to be a fan and then after each sequal they just became more of the same. How about something new? The market is already flooded with stealth action games and most of them you don't have to wade through 20mins of cutscenes to actually play the game. /Points finger at MGS: Acid!!!

If they arnt exclusives, why even bother mentioning them? And some of those titles are even plain lies, they arnt even released on the ps3. Is it so hard to doublecheck the truth behind a rumour?
  • #84 6 years ago

@Dizzy "Hansi320, why are you happy with Sony? Did they rape you analy?"

Nope, they gave me PS1 and PS2 and they were worth every penny.

I can almost say that for my N64 and GC also, but the sad truth is that my GC has collected a lot of dust since Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. On the N64 I have like 2 games, one of the being Ocarina of Time.

So, yeah, Sony has given me lots of fun for my money this far.

    edit:
also, I look forward to Zelda Twilight Princess, but to be honest I think it kinda looks like a GC game, not very impressed by Wii's graphics to say the least. But as always, Nintendo have made great Zelda games, so graphs shouldn't matter to much.

@Xerx3s - i bother mentioning them as some people don't own or intend to buy a 360 and will therefore be using PS3 for multiformat titles. Also this is with regard to and article about PS3 release titles, not exclusive Ps3 release titles.
i would also be interested to know which of the titles i have listed are not going to be released for the PS3, (the only one i know to be dubious is Half Life 2).

Oke, so they have completed 100% of the graphical part of the dev cycle, but need to start on all other things then? These statements are a load of bull and smell like damage control (note that ms had these comments as well iirc). If you program normal programs, you can specify how much time and efford it will take (more or less, if you know what you are doing). Games however, are a form of art, and like every other form of art, its is dependant on a variety of factors. You could plan it all and be @ 99% and still fail to release it for 8 years. *CO-dntf-UGH*

"@Xerx3s - i bother mentioning them as some people don't own or intend to buy a 360 and will therefore be using PS3 for multiformat titles. Also this is with regard to and article about PS3 release titles, not exclusive Ps3 release titles.
i would also be interested to know which of the titles i have listed are not going to be released for the PS3, (the only one i know to be dubious is Half Life 2)."

Because i actually took 5 mins to do a backgroundcheck and google around a bit.

Hansi thats fair enough, I myself was quite fond of the Ps1 because of all the games available at the time I bought it, but then came the Xbox and I realised I wouldnt miss much if Sony werent around(not that I want them to leave the industry... competition is a good thing), because 99% of the content would still get made by the devs anyway regardless of Sony(plus they do "borrow" rather than innovate mostly).

Also the Wii games on display were running on souped up GC dev kits... most devs are saying the switch will be easy because Wii is like a GC with more ram, higher clock and a few more bells and whistles. Still since none of the games were running on Wii dev kits which were only being shipped to devs a week before E3(not enough time to prepare for E3) I expect theres alot more polished visuals to come from Wii games(although they werent aiming for the highest spec they've never been too far behind in any generation).

If you've never had a PS2 then you really are missing out on a whole range of awesome games, however with that comes a whole range of terrible ones.

I have played/seen quite alot of PS2 games through friends, there was some fun to be had with a few games but I still didnt feel the urge to buy one at the start of that generation(I would have had a dreamcast if it would have stuck around and continued to improve like they were doing, so I had time to save up for one... the megadrive and indeed Sega will always hold a place in my heart, it was my and many others first console, a solid reason to switch from Amiga/Atari... long live Sega I hope they turn things around this gen) and once I took a look at the other consoles and what they offered, I decided Xbox was for me. The power/graphics, online plans, a promising looking launch line up and the hope that the big PC games would make their way to Xbox better than in previous gens, since my PC was already looking dated compared to Xbox, all this weighed into the decision. Looking back 90% of the PS2 games Ive been interested in the current gen made their way to Xbox eventually, so I think I made the right choice(I dont play many JRPGs or RPGs in general, ShenmueII and Kotor were enough for me and Morrowind I wasnt sure of... Im still not so I havent picked it up, perhaps theres time before I buy a 360 to scout around for bargain deals on those games I passed on).

*edit Im not sure how readable this is but I will check later.
