CS, DoD: Source updates coming

HDR maps, new features.

Valve's planning to do some updates to the Source Engine versions of Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat "in the next few weeks".

Counter-Strike's going to get some more HDR-enabled versions of maps, says Valve, "along with some enhancements to the game itself".

Meanwhile, DoD is getting "a significant release" adding new features and a new map called Colmar (pictured, hopefully, assuming I remember to add the image for once in my miserable life).

Colmar's going to be the first map to take advantage of a new objective system, which lets Valve build "different kinds of levels than currently exist". The ones we have at the moment all use the same, control-point-based system.

Colmar's set during the night, obviously, and joins the six others available at the moment. You can get hold of Day of Defeat: Source in shops and online through Steam, and you can check out our review elsewhere on the site.

More HDR maps? Great, that's the first feature I turn off as it places you at a serious disadvantage unless everyone is running HDR (which they're not).

Give us more maps rather than tweaking old ones please Mr Valve. And more skins, the T ones are all pretty poor.

    Tut.

Hmm. I haven't played this for a long time after getting BF2. I agree with Mike. More maps full stop.

I use HDR without any noticeable disadvantage... but then I play both source games over a 56K connection (and, btw they work surprisingly well over that connection too).

About Colmar... where is the photo? :D

I only got Half Life 2 yesterday and its my first exposure to Steam but I like it.

I already have Half-Life Episode 1 pre-loaded, itll unlock on the day of its release. I will miss having actual copies but since its the PC and most of the packaging is non-existant anyway I think ill survive.

    To neuroniky:

I'm not talking about performance disadvantages with HDR, more playablilty. What I meant is that if you are using HDR and get blinded by eg the sun when leaving a building or, more specifically, looking out of the underground tunnel in militia (Where yuou see nothing but sun glare) then you will be disadvantaged compared to someone who does not have those effects enabled who will be able to see clearly.

It's a pointless addition to an online only game unless it can't be turned off.

I can't wait for the new DoD map, and a new gameplay type too! And at night time! Valve love spoiling us rotten, DoD's my favourite online game right now.

    Kazzahdrane,

DoD's my favourite online game right now.

I play BF2, DoD and CoD2 online. BF2 is the best if you have a beefy net connection. Lots of fools playing it, but the vehicles! Oh, the vehicles!

I had to give up playing BF2 just because of the sheer quantity of UTTER FUCKTARDS playing it :(

I want refinements to the source netcode - I don't feel it's good enough yet online. HDR is nice but I have it turned off anyway.

Am I the only one who thinks CS Source feels awkward and disconnected and prefers the "heavy" world of 1.5/6?

    Non?
