Nintendo Revolution first images, details

Magic beans spilt ahead of briefing. Downloadable back catalogue?

'Nintendo Revolution first images, details' Screenshot 1

With just hours to go until Nintendo's pre-E3 conference kicks off in LA, first pictures of its next-gen Revolution console have appeared on the Internet. You can take a look at Revolution here.

As we reported last week, its slim and sleek design appears to be no bigger than a pile of three DVD cases. The console can be positioned vertically or horizontally, as seems to be trendy these days, and features a front-loading disc tray.

USA Today has also confirmed that the Revolution is backwards compatible with GameCube games, and - a first for Nintendo - will play DVDs. An Xbox Live-style online service is in the works, and it'll offer downloadable versions of almost all the games in Nintendo's back catalogue, from Donkey Kong to Mario Sunshine. There's no word on pricing, however.

The console is said to offer two or three times the power of the GameCube - a somewhat humble claim compared to the figures Microsoft and Sony have been bandying about. But “It's not all about having 'turbo power',” Nintendo exec Perrin Kaplan is quoted as saying. “It's about what you do with it.”

And who does what with it, apparently. “We've built Revolution around the concept of 'all-access gaming'” - meaning developers should find it easy to create games for, and all types of gamers should find something that appeals to them. “We're about sticking to the soul of gaming,” Kaplan states.

The Nintendo conference kicks off at 4.30pm UK time, so expect more details later today.

nintendo's design team does it again.. shame they all seem to be living in the early 80's at the moment.

2 to 3 times the power of the gamecube?
The power of an Xbox then. (this was a joke by the way - sheesh.)

Never expected much from nintendo, looks like thats what they are delivering.
    If it's real.

Aesthecially speaking, that is the sexiest console of the three IMO. They hinted that they could make sexy hardware with the Panasonic Q and now this follows it up nicely. Of course, it all depends on whether the games are there to support it. And knowing Nintendo they'll offer a service to download every game for every one of it's previous consoles... except in Europem where we'll get an exclusive Game and Watch emulator to compensate...
  • Wobbler #7 7 years ago

It's a slightly bigger, black, Mac Mini!
  • ruttyboy #8 7 years ago

Somehow I seriously doubt that an Xbox is 2 or 3 times more powerful than a Cube...
  • Wobbler #9 7 years ago

It's a slightly bigger, black, Mac Mini!
  • Darkedge #10 7 years ago

wouldn't call it a fisher price toy - I'd call it a piss poor render actually.
Panasonic designed the q not nintendo. Nini's latest genius is the DS, which looks and feels cheap and tacky. Strangly the games are fun, well for 5 mins at least.
  • jmctavish #11 7 years ago

I think i'ts quite refreshing that they seem to be interested only in delivering quality games.
  • ruttyboy #12 7 years ago

So Ninty had no input on the Q then? They haven't learned from Panasonic at all?
  • Tiiti #13 7 years ago

    very sexy indeed :)
The eject and reset button should be the other way around tho :)
  • Gl3n #14 7 years ago

nice little box :) not long until ninty's press conferance.
  • smelly #15 7 years ago

Bear in mind that nintendo have always been slightly more truthful than the other 2 when it comes to how powerful their machines are.

remember last time round when xbox/ps2 were giving poly performance for unlit untextured polys, but nintendo gave proper textured poly performance (and as such their system looked on paper worse?).

  • smelly #16 7 years ago

"Somehow I seriously doubt that an Xbox is 2 or 3 times more powerful than a Cube... "

through the eyes of a blinkered fanboy? probably.
  • Xerx3s #17 7 years ago

Now if they would only make some good games for ADULTS, then i might actually consider buying a nintendo again (the gamecube was the first nintendo that i DIDNT buy because of the childisch games).
  • ruttyboy #18 7 years ago

Depends on your definition of powerful I guess smelly. I have both consoles and certainly graphically the difference to me is not in the order of a 2-300% improvement. But hey, I'm a 'blinkered fanboy' so what would I know...

EDIT: Hang on, I've just re-read what you said and I think you were agreeing with me. I'll shut up now :)

  • valli #19 7 years ago

    Very nice and sleek.

Looks like a huge mobile SIM card! =)
  • Les #20 7 years ago

I like the look. Simple and clean. And Nintendo will probably make it available in a million different colours.

But I'm curious how they are going to fit more than 1 PowerPC CPU in there... But if it's really underpowered compared to 360 and PS3, that will hurt its mainstream sales. People knowing nothing about consoles will never be advised to go for the Revolution if they ask a store clerk, just like nobody will tell you to go for the Gamecube right now.
  • smelly #21 7 years ago

"Now if they would only make some good games for ADULTS"

Gawd.. here we go again.. a child moaning that there isnt adult games on his console.

Like resident evil? Eternal Darkness? Metroid? etc etc?

Or do you mean stuff to keep the kids happy like gta?
  • zErOb_cOOl #22 7 years ago

It would be nice to believe what Ninty say. But I agree, you don't need "Turbo power". You just have to use it well.

Hopefully this will be the most most un-Nintendo, Nintendo console of them all. With hardware, and a fairly low spec enabling games to be easily be created for it, for once we could see Ninty sitting on all the games.

Probably good, well thought out games at that, but mainly fun.
  • smelly #23 7 years ago

"EDIT: Hang on, I've just re-read what you said and I think you were agreeing with me. I'll shut up now :) "

    Yeah.. you do that.. :)
  • Rankin #24 7 years ago

Try Eternal Darkness Xerx3s you idiot. One of the first games available on the system.
  • Tiiti #25 7 years ago

GC to Xbox difference can't be more than like 125% surely? 25% more powerful in other words
  • effinwooly #26 7 years ago

It looks okay... ! Now please Ninty, can we have good games that are more adult in nature...... ta

The different between the GC and Xbox 1 is 2.5 times......according to specs anyway !

  • smelly #27 7 years ago

But it's gonna have the biggest catalog of games of all the systems.. the WHOLE nintendo back catalog?

That'd be something for bloody everyone in there!
  • Ranger101 #28 7 years ago

Excellent stuff. It'd get lost within the concaves of the 360, and eclipsed by the convex of the ps3, but it looks like a console should do. I can imagine some hookup that uses the DS as a portable dual LCD screen for it.
  • skybluesam86 #29 7 years ago

    I love the design.

And look at the first picture - It even supports disc levitation!

  • ruttyboy #30 7 years ago

I'm interested in this backcat download thing, could that work for all games, or just the Ninty ones. Surely the licensing problems would be enormous?
  • l_p_4_7 #31 7 years ago

So it is going to be called "Revolution" afterall? I thought it was just a codename...
  • Dant #32 7 years ago

If you look at one of the high-res shots you can see it says "Revolution" on the bottom, does this mean Revolution is more than just the code name?
  • Ranger101 #33 7 years ago

I think because of Nintendos 'you have to pay us to make a game for our system' licensing deal, they might actually own the title.

Or it might simply (and obviously) be 1st party games.
  • #34 7 years ago

Yay.. and now ruin the whole experience with kiddy games and more mario, peach shite.

  • Ranger101 #35 7 years ago

If Mario were to spout "Fuck you" and touch up Daisy now and again during the platforming, would that make you happy?
Should Mario go the way of Sonic and become a shotgun toting anti-hero, with very little to say and brutish good looks? Would that change the gaming innovation?
  • Lothar Hex #36 7 years ago

  • ruttyboy #37 7 years ago

"If Mario were to spout "Fuck you" and touch up Daisy now and again during the platforming, would that make you happy?"

LOL! Guaranteed million seller right there :)
  • drumbaby #38 7 years ago

Should keep the Ninty faithful happy, I guess.

    ;)
  • PearOfAnguish #39 7 years ago

"I think i'ts quite refreshing that they seem to be interested only in delivering quality games."

Nintendo always say that, because their systems are never as powerful. Sony and the rest break out the fancy videos and reel off impressive specs and everyone rushes out to buy them. Say what you like about graphics not being the point, most people will still go for the Xbox360 and PS3.
Still, the back-catalogue feature has potential.

"Now if they would only make some good games for ADULTS"

"Yay.. and now ruin the whole experience with kiddy games and more mario, peach shite."

Didn't take long, did it. Morons. If Nintendo is developing games for kids it's probably because, going by some of the comments on EG the last few days, most gamers have a mental age of about five.

  • sir_tripod #40 7 years ago

  • gamingdave #41 7 years ago

"Nintendo always say that, because their systems are never as powerful."

What a load of bullshit. Cube less powerfull than a PS2 is it?
  • AOFanboi #42 7 years ago

The GC has the complete Resident Evil series and Eternal Darkness for mature gaming.

Oh, you said "Adult". You want the XBox with DOA3, XXX Beach Volleyball etc. for that.
  • lost_soul #43 7 years ago

Easily the best looking of the next gen. consoles.

Most likely the least powerful too. Though of course it's all about the games.
  • drumbaby #44 7 years ago

"“We're about sticking to the soul of gaming,” Kaplan states. "

And noone else is. How very admirable. Brings a tear to ones eye, so it does.
  • Kami #45 7 years ago

I think 'Cube has done more than it's fair share of proving it is just as - if not more - powerful than the X-Box, what with RE4 being the best-looking game this generation, and Zelda on the way to possibly trump even that (and that's no mean feat), and Metroid Prime/MP2 and the stunning levels of detail that Retro Studios managed to cram in. Once again, Nintendo haters strike. Sorry, I'm sick of the constant "Lets all hate on Nintendo" crap - what a petty bunch of ******** Nintendo haters must be.

Anyway, I like the design - small and pretty, you know how the Japanese are for their things being "small". Three times the power is modest, but I have to say... it also sounds the most realistic. I can't believe ANYONE is buying this 30/150 times more powerful crap... figures aren't adding up there. I'm REALLY looking forward to see what Nintendo have to show off in 50 minutes (live feed, lovely live feed!), they're great showspeople. I'm eager to see what games are running off this dinky piece of kit. It's stunningly small, if they can show off some stunning games... well.

The size of that is just mindboggling... that's tiny...
  • stormcr0wfleet #46 7 years ago

man, thats seriously good looking.. it makes the ps3 look even more fugly! (if thats possable). i hope the games look as good, beacuse if like said nintendo are gona stay just a gaming company and not branch out into the "home entertainment" section.. then there console really needs to stand up to the other two, power-wise :)

i wonder what the controllers will look like :). wont be hard for nintendo to have the best looking controllers this time around ;-)
  • Pirotic #47 7 years ago

best looking next generation console by a mile, followed closely by the 360 and leaving the PS3 way behind in last place.

    Now for the games...
  • PearOfAnguish #48 7 years ago

Meh, maybe it's more powerful than the PS2 then, whatever. Their marketing still sucks though, and the cube didn't play DVDs or have the same online capability as PS2 and Xbox. Only now are they introducing DVD's and online access, like the cube was their first system to use optical discs after the N64 got trounced by PS1. Always a step behind, it seems.

EG, you can now slag it off for being not the real next gen, and how Sony have already won the battle. We are all waiting, cheers.
  • #51 7 years ago

Im still wondering what the revolution part and all those 3d rumors that were knocking about.

  • PearOfAnguish #52 7 years ago

Doesn't look like there are any controller ports on the front. I'm liking this trend for wireless controllers, the Wavebird is great.
  • ruttyboy #53 7 years ago

I think the controller will come in two designs, one with a Knightrider theme (complete with moving red light) and one in a lovely Airwolf theme (with lovely swappable Ernest Borgnine and Jan-Michael Vincent faceplates).

Then a limited edition version of the console with an 'A-team van' red stripe down the side :)
  • spectre #54 7 years ago

Why aren't they showing the top in any of the pics? hmmmmm
  • stormcr0wfleet #55 7 years ago

37 mins untill the feed starts over at gamespot :)
  • Jos #56 7 years ago

Liking the looks. More interested in the controllers - presumably this is where the revolution is going to come in? Or maybe they have some interesting on-line stuff to show. I've always fancied the idea of a Nintedo On-line world where you traverse around it to get to games that exist within the context of that on-line world. Might be a bit pastel shaded, but pretty cool none-the-less...

But coming back to Earth for a moment, sounds like they are going to have a pretty comprehensive on-line game delivery service - if they cost that right they should be on to a nice money spinner if it can just play back catalogue games downloaded (or streamed?) over the net.

  • plasdas #57 7 years ago

Looks like it'll fit into my PC case, right under my dvd drive.
    Well, it would save space...
  • Ranger101 #58 7 years ago

There's a difference in philosophy between MS/Sony and Nintendo - MS/Sony are producing multi-media systems formost offering an all-in-one system for the consumer. Nintendos philosphy is Gaming first, while they haven't been commercially sucessful as a multimedia manufacturer, they have been as a gaming developer.

It's a case of features versus innovation - reflected in the PSP vs DS. Think of Nintendo as the specialist firm - Sure you could get an MP3 player watch made by Casio that has bluetooth connectivity and lcd lights and screens or you could purchase a Rolex which just tells the time.
If Nintendo wanted commercial success, then I'm sure teh Marketing machine would've been similar to Sony and MS, but as it stands it appears Nintendo have a different agenda.
  • Galvanizer #59 7 years ago

So small! So cute! So stylish!

I'd get this just to play GameCube games! Yet alone the new revolutionary ones!

Congrats Ninty you are currently leading the next-gen war in terms of looks of the machine.

Oh, and don't be so modest. You know N5 is way more powerful then what you said. Just wanna gobsmack everyone at E3 conference huh?
  • stormcr0wfleet #60 7 years ago

is the feed on gamespot free?, cus i thought nintendos feed was free and clicking the check it out button on the nintendo site takes you to the gamespot webby were is says "GameSpot Complete to join us live"
  • varsas #61 7 years ago

Xbox = GC x2.5? Eh? I don't think so, show me an XBox game that looks 2.5 better than RE4!

Hopefully the controllers will also be very well designed too and as comfortable as the GC ones. I wonder if the GBA2 will follow a similar aesthetic?
  • gamingdave #62 7 years ago

"I've always fancied the idea of a Nintedo On-line world where you traverse around it to get to games that exist within the context of that on-line world."

Thats what ive been saying for ages! All my gaming in the Mushroom Kingdom. No longer would games be "anounced" on sites like this. But youd boot up the machine and see that a new area of the world was under construction, billboards would spring up and you could see it as it being developed. Then once its ready you could pop into any parts of the world for demos and pay if you wanted constant access.
  • skybluesam86 #63 7 years ago

That would be utterly immense if they actually made that possible.
  • ekko #64 7 years ago

    That's a sexy hand.
  • onyxbox #65 7 years ago

I've got this feeling that Nintendo are being a bit smug about the whole 'Next Gen' war because they genuinely have something different this time around. Look at the DS, it's packed with good ideas from a hardware standpoint and in the way it's wireless stuff 'just works'.

I don't think they're too worried about XBox or PS3 right now, they're enjoying the circus so to speak.
  • stormcr0wfleet #66 7 years ago

  • BlindNinja #74 7 years ago

I'm going against the grain here - but I think it looks a bit dull. More like a hub or router than a console.
That said (and the same goes for XBox360 and PS3) it doesn't matter what it looks like - it's all about the games. And we all know that Nintendo know what they're doing there.
  • drks #75 7 years ago

eh, the GC controller was by a mile the best of all the consoles this gen

and, assuming you went with the black GC as all sensible people did, it's less 'colourful' than the xbox controller. so that makes no sense
  • drks #76 7 years ago

" I'm going against the grain here - but I think it looks a bit dull. More like a hub or router than a console. "

exactly why it's good. i'm sick of consoles being overstated ugly gigantic monstrosities. like the ps2, ps3 x360

  • O-Fox #82 7 years ago

  • Gurgeh #83 7 years ago

Looks alright, but while size isn't everything it's difficult to see how something that small is going to pack anything like the punch of a PS3 or XBox 360. Maybe they are counting on advances in chip fabrication reducing the cooling requirements, or perhaps this wee beast is simply going to be more expensive than we expect.

If there's a downloadable back catalogue there's also got to be storage in there somewhere, unless it's an add-on.
  • punzai #84 7 years ago

I think IGN had an idea that Animal Crossing would make a great online hub! You can wander about looking at the noticeboards etc... everyone could have their own house. you can see their game collection on their shelves etc...

"In what way were the shoulder buttons stupidly designed. They were genius. Not Nintendo's fault that they were underused."

Well, opinions are like asses... (no disrespect intended) but imo it was stupidly designed. It was invert. designed with a sharp edge on top making it a matter of lifting your fingers and moving them to press the buttons instead of just sliding on them like you do on the xbox and ps2 controller. allmost forcing you to hold your fingers on it. It had a distinct plastic feel to it and you sometime had to press it too long a distance inside the controller to have an effect. Just annoyed by how far you had to press that thing for an effect. And cheap feel of the thing.

The ps2 controller, now thats a work of art.

Erm.. you've seen games on this machine? Where? I think you've messed up matey.

Yeah i guess... but its a shoulder button. I treated it like a shoulder button, and playing MGS the twin snakes made me annoyed by how it was designed. As a gas peddal.

" assume the obvious joke has already been done somewhere in
the 100 comments, but it's never too good to air again?

Will it only play PG rated DVDs? "

    hehehehehe
  • Paleface #104 7 years ago

Quick comment on that slot-drive... all of Apple's slot-loading drives tell you to *only* put a 12cm disc (ie full size DVD/CD)in; putting dinky 3" discs (eg Gamecube discs) in them is a sure-fire way to get things stuck and broken.

So I'm interested to see if they've found a slot loader that can load 3" discs correctly. Love the look of it, incidentally; the "trade paperback" size is killer. And yeah, wireless controllers rock - my Wavebird was a quantum leap, tbh.

"Will it only play PG rated DVDs?"

Well dunno.. My guess is it'll play 18 rated films, but wont censor them for decapitation.

    hahahahehhehehehahohohoho!

    Bloody fanboys.

Thought i sa a pikmin, a mario, another mario, and another mario... and another mario, a zelda and another mario somewhere. maybe that was fo rthe cube then.... my bad, sorry.
  • Scimarad #107 7 years ago

    Ahhh, isn't it cute:-)

Actually 2 to 3 times the power of cube is pretty cool.
  • Gurgeh #108 7 years ago

"Being underpowered never hurt the ps2 did it?"

Was the PS2 underpowered compared to it's competition at launch? The Revolution needs to be at least comparable in power to the PS3 and XBox 360, assuming it launches in the same time frame.

The back catalogue is only of real interest to the existing Nintendo user base; people who want to play Mario Sunshine already have a Cube, those who don't, don't. It's not something that's going to put the Revolution at the top of the next-gen consoles.

"The Revolution needs to be at least comparable in power to the PS3 and XBox 360"

says who? If you ask most fanboys they seem to think the ps2 was more powerful than the cube. Joe public cant tell the difference on these things, if you tell them something is "better" they agree with you.

But u also have to remember that nintendo have history of being more "honest" with specs than the other two.. remember the last time when the other 2 were giving UNTEXTURED/UNLIT poly thruput and nintendo gave REALWORLD performace stats?

My guess is the reality isnt that far off..

Im guessing the have a bit more up their sleves.

    HEY GUYS

    GUYS

I have an idea for a new feature for the new EG website: a word filter. Have it automatically remove any posts that include the word "kiddy".

Also, I never take much notice to claims of "so and so many times as powerful as", since they're a lousy indicator. Remember that video interview where the guy claimed the PS2 had the power of 10 Dreamcasts? I'll wait till I see actual specs and games.

Well, maybe next time, eh Nintendo?

    Pfft!

Only kidding. Of all the next gen systems, this is by far the classiest, and I have to take my hat off to Nintendo for not cheapening themselves by playing the numbers game (despite the fact that it's one they wouldn't win). As the only company who is actually trying different approaches at the moment (a la the DS), I really hope that they get this one right.

  • RobTheBuilder #112 7 years ago

This is by far the best looking of the three. And althought the power sounded a bit weak, sources who have seen it running say that the gfx are at least as good as 360.
  • [dsr.vincent] #113 7 years ago

Disappointing. Just... ah for christ sake Ninendo... what the hell are you doing? They seem set at digging their own grave really. Sad, just sad.
  • roofles #114 7 years ago

Apparently Nintendo hasn't designed a controller or any games for the Revolution yet. In fact, I'd say that all they've accomplished is an empty black box made out of plastic.

Or at least that's the bitter impression I got from their conference.
  • kdjac #115 7 years ago

It plays every Ninty game ever , all downoloadable , thats me sold.

  • Teeth #118 7 years ago

The presentation was understated, but that's their right. If they don't want to tell us what the controller is like then that's their call. No need to be bullied into it by Microsoft.

From what they said, I got the impression the Revolution controller will be a sort of micro-DS, something along the lines of a full-sized Dreamcast VM that can connect to other controllers wirelessly as well as the Revolution and you could take it with you to places to play and trade etc with other people, possibly browse the web... would be pretty innovative anyway.
  • Teeth #119 7 years ago

I think we're all sick of the "Mario plays this" and "Mario plays that" games now though. Please, just another regular platforming Mario game, for goodness' sake
  • captain-future #120 7 years ago

could it just be that Big N is the winner in the next generation.

point in case: MS + Sony go at war about media center / home entertainment with lots of cpu/gpu/wtf? power and lot of features that people maybe just maybe do not grave?

and look at the price tag: with the exception of Big N all next-gen consoles will cost just a huge amount of hard earned cash...

wishful thinking maybe... but nowadays I'm just fad up with two things "Xbox 360 Zen Talk" and "Eurogamer PS3 Pep Talk"... so it's decided I will buy Ninty's next-gen console first. and wait for the others to drop in price.
