Driv4r announced News

PC PlayStation 2 Xbox
News by Tom Bramwell

17 May, 2005

Ah, the Driver series. How we loved the first game. How we sort of liked the second one, even though the on-foot bits were rubbish. How we wept when we played the third, shaking our fists at the sky and crying, WHY? whilst filled with loathing for everything from the rubbish physics to the impossibly hard missions to the stupid, stupid 3 in the middle of the title.

But still, it did go on to sell several billion copies - so it should come as no surprise that Atari is developing a fourth instalment in the series for PC, PS2 and Xbox.

It's being developed by Reflections Interactive, the same studio behind the previous games - but someone else will be in charge this time, since founder and MD Martin Edmondson resigned after the Driv3r fiasco.

With our next Driver game, we are concentrating on those qualities that defined the franchise and established it as a perennial best-seller, said Atari bigwig Marc Metis. Let's hope so.

Few details have been revealed so far, other than the fact that the game is set in New York City and will feature unparalled physics superb vehicle dynamics photo-realistic environments etc. etc. etc.

Driver 4 - as we sincerely hope they'll title it - will be out early next year.

forget it, change first the heads of the company if you want good quality (read: n o t t o r u s h the game). And make it back a driver game not a GTA clone!!!

But wait they only want a perennial best-seller who cares of the quality if they can get their money.

"concentrating on those qualities that defined the franchise and established it as a perennial best-seller"

?????? Qualities... Err that it was a terrible, terrible game?
Maybe if you make it even MORE terrible, you will sell more copies?

God help us all.

First Driver was good. They really should do a GTA clone with more attention to vehicles. Alternatively they could get rid of all non-driving mission -- that will probably be good too.

Look, for the LAST time Driv3r was GREAT. A true cult classic.

Anyone who disagrees with me is an ignorant scumbag.

Thank you.

Don't agree. I was soon hooked and completed the entire game after a few evening sessions.

I thought the game was pretty challenging in places, which for me was a bonus, whilst it must have put a lot of ppl off...

Yeah I loved the bit in Driv3l where you could move just out far enough from behind a wall to shoot the bad guys and they would stand there ignoring the fact that their buddies are being picked off one by one right next to them.

Still you can prob do that in GTA and a lot of other FPSs

Agreed. If you stuck with the game, looked beyond the naff on-foot sections, and took it for the DRIVING game that it should have been all along, it was actually very good to play and great fun, except for the imovable lamposts damnit, what the Hell!?
