It is rather nice of them to do this. Shows they care to a certain degree about their users.

...

How much is this gonna cost them?

I do hope the petrol was poured onto the X-Box, otherwise the x-box isn't the source of the fire and therefore not MS's fault....

(Please note, I have an X-Box and I do like it. This is just me trying to be funny and play along.)

They care enough to avoid getting sued.

I've no idea which random cable is plugged into the back of my Xbox. I just grabbed the first figure of 8 cable I could find.

replacing 14 million power cables will cost them a pretty penny. Good on them, I say.

Good news is the xbox power cable is your standard run of the mill job, so its worth filling out the form just to get a spare for the PSP etc.

In an extraordinary demonstration of its commitment to consumer safety, Microsoft today announced that it will voluntarily replace...

This is a direct copy'n'paste from the Microsoft trying-to-turn-it-into-our-favour press release, surely?

"[...] customers are advised to switch their consoles off at the mains when not in use."

Sadly, the Xbox's internal clock is unable to remember the time when it is without power for a few hours.

Hold on. This can't be right. It's PS2s that are unreliable and need to be replaced every 30 seconds otherwise they Jackson your kids. And PSPs whose buttons jam, then explode spraying shrapnel and anthrax over every pensioner within a mile.

Poor old Xbox fanbois. One less thing they can blather about superiority over PS2s.

Well, my luvverly new cable (complete with power breaker - other console companies take note) arrived this morning, and it has a European Continent-style plug as opposed to a big, clunky UK plug. How very useful...

I called customer services, went to the official number, couldn't speak to anything else other than automated services, went back to the general line, they put me through direct and were generally very helpful.

Seems a lot of UK owners have been having this problem, leading to further delay for us and more expense for Microsoft (so there is a good side to this ;) ).

Give them a shout if you have the same problem (0800 587 1102 in the UK), play nice and they'll sort it all out.

I'm going to start getting paranoid soon - my second Euro-Cable arrived today. Hmmm... Wonder if there's a market for these things on ebay... ;)
