Quake 4 coming to Macs

Courtesy of Aspyr Media.

Good news for Quake-loving Apple fans - publisher Aspyr Media has announced plans to release a version of Quake 4 for Macs.

As you'll know if you read our review, Quake 4 follows the adventures of Matthew Kane as he attempts to fight off the evil Strogg. And it's quite good.

This isn't the first time Aspyr has taken pity on people who don't own a proper computer - the publisher also previously released Mac versions of games from the Call of Duty, Doom and Star Wars series.

Quake 4 is out early next year, and will work on both PowerPC and Intel Macs.

"This isn't the first time Aspyr has taken pity on people who don't own a proper computer "

EG are in for some real FLAK this time. And if there are actually Mac users considering this game, I think they are sensible enough to avoid this and instead opt for something like FEAR or CoD 2.. Oh damn I forgot.... ;-)

Well, this time they've taken pity on those who own proper computers by distributing the misery...

What did Apple owners do wrong?
  • joey #4 7 years ago

    *sigh*

Mac users get this all the time, please dont even bother.

Main reason I switched to Mac and consoles was because I was sick of games constantly requiring me to upgrade my PC.

So thats the xbox and mac's they dislike.

I take it the eurogamer staff use viao laptops ;)
  • robo_1 #6 7 years ago

    A proper computer : D

I hope that was a failed attempt at irony. Either way, you've made me laugh.
  • potatoes #7 7 years ago

actually, you will find that Aspyr was a publisher of Mac games long before they branched out to PC and console titles.

..and yes, i use Macs exclusivly for work and personal use... not a PC in sight; and im happy to smile and nod at anyone who claims i am inferior somehow.

Intel Mac's early next year - no one seems to know if it will be the powermac/book or the iBook/iMac/Mini first though.

Should be quite an easy switch as Apple have admitted that OSX has been developed for both for over 5 years now. Devs have P4 3.6ghz machines and say they run the OS very well.

What impact this will have on games I have no idea, guess it coud be easier to port.

"I take it the eurogamer staff use viao laptops ;)"

DOn't be silly, they use those Alienware Laptops, for Quake 4 sessions which they are not adverse to telling us about in the comments. :)

Wot no "one button mouse" comments??
    Jeez.
  • Artemus #13 7 years ago

Macs are teh crap and that's why Microsoft ran their 360 demos on them clearly.
  • gibbondrives #14 7 years ago

rumour has it the low end macs get the intel chips first, as all the apps that 'typical' power mac/book users use like tattyshop, flash and audio/video apps are not ready to use on the intels.
  • lordgreg #15 7 years ago

i'm using standard pc on x86 arhitecture, but don't see why should apple computer be taken as "unproper computer"??? alot of things on apple should been seen on pc's, and if i, as programmer, take out the fact, that it's OS is built on *NIX system, i would see that as an better computer or OS (whatever you like more) as the Windows on x86 arhitecture!
  • sickpuppysoftware #16 7 years ago

It's nice to know that even after all these years that Mac users still snap at the bait :o)

For the record I like Macs and the minute Apple release a CD that'll install on any Intel machine to dual boot with Windows I'll buy it.

Sadly I think I'll be waiting some time.
  • krudster #17 7 years ago

Guys, I think it was meant as a joke....chill.
  • space_ace #18 7 years ago

just a free recompile of the executable would've been enough...
  • MadMirko #19 7 years ago

Jeez, calm down guys. Apple is a company, not a religion (really!), a Mac is a computer not an emblem of superiority (I'm not kidding!), and if someone makes a joke about either of them, it's not blasphemy or conspiracy led by Microsoft.

    Thanks.

I think someone else aught to go re-write this article because aside from the derogatory if not offensive remark about the Macintosh operating system which in all fairness runs circles around anything else available at a consumer level, Aspyr is one of the biggest publishers of games for the operating system including titles such as the Sim City and Sims franchise so making it sound like a one off is a little naive.
  • cybersoga #21 7 years ago

it's fucking slow on my pc, if it's anything like doom3, it'll be even slower on my mac.
  • cov #22 7 years ago

how can you be "derogatory" or "offensive" to an OS??! It's clearly a joke and the defensive responses in these comments only serve to confirm the stereotype of the oversensitive and precious mac user.
  • virax #23 7 years ago

Maybe it was a bad pun? PC... Proper Computer?

Ehh... hehehhh. Either way, it was just a joke.

Jesus christ you Mac users are sensitive.
  • YUSHi #25 7 years ago

    @cov

"how can you be "derogatory" or "offensive" to an OS??! It's clearly a joke and the defensive responses in these comments only serve to confirm the stereotype of the oversensitive and precious mac user."

It wasn't being derogatory towards the OS but more specifically it's users by showing an unnecessary degree of disrespect towards them by suggesting that they are unable to buy proper computers - it's like a BMW driver pulling up along side a Ford Focus at the lights and him winding down the window and asking the Ford driver across from him when he was planning on growing up and buying a proper car.

An attack on the OS is perfectly fine as Mac users lay into Windows all the time and vice versa - that's been going on for what seems like forever sometimes - but the line in the sand is being disrespectful to users who choose to use what OS they choose which is what's offensive - not the suggestion that Macs are not "proper computers" because any Mac user would be laughing at that remark at how absurd it was.

And you are right, Mac users (or rather any users of an minority OS) are generally more sensitive to this sort of thing as they have to put up with being 2nd class users to many software companies and more frustratingly websites... the web has set standards, if every web developer kept to them the web would run perfectly regardless of what browser or OS you used so long as it supported those standards - how hard really is that to do? well, sites like Yahoo! throw spanners into the works by only focusing on Windows users - it's things like that which sensitize people who use Macs, who use Linux or whatever as their computers are perfectly capable of handling what would be asked of them but the laziness of developers is just incredibly frustrating.

It's also worth mentioning that because these people use an OS that only holds a small percentage of the market there is a much more willingness to form small communities together (such as the MUGS) to solve usage problems and to complain to software companies and web masters about keeping to standards or about making improvements to existing products.

Furbs - Sure you hadn't noticed, but Macs come with four-button mice with a scroll ball.
  • firm3d #27 7 years ago

YUSHi - As grateful as I am to Aspyr for some titles, I'd say they've gotten far too big for their boots; if the Quake IV port is based off the Doom 3 port it'll be the second worst port in history.

At least Blizzard always put the Mac version in with the PC version themselves.
  • Pho-Zoon #28 7 years ago

nah... Macs are computers made for design software. However, I wouldn't mind a copy of Half Life 2. At least that'd run better than on Xbox.

EDIT: I forgot to put some angry comment about how Valve failed to ever port Half Life to Macs. Er... Pooheads.

I agree with YUSHi. I own use both a Mac and a PC and I admit both OS's have their plus and minus. If you listen to Mac users you'll hear if it's not OSX on your system then it's crap, utter rubbish.

Truthfully i'm more impressed with Windows XP than with OSX or any Apple OS because Windows XP needs to be written for thousands of different configurations around the world. Apple just writes it for thier system. And they too need to issue OS updates as well.

My biggest problem with Mac Zealots here in the US is that if your not using a Mac your an idiot. They have their heads so far up Steve Jobs arse it isn't even funny.

    My 2 pence.

I used a Mac for years. I would again if the circumstances were right. But I couldn't care less if people mock it from time to time.

If an important requirement for your machine of choice is that it plays games, the Mac just isn't the best choice by a country mile. Even back when I used a Mac as my main machine AND played games on it, I never really bought Steve Jobs' "its a great games machine" banter. Of course he has to say that, but it doesn't make it true.

If you use a Mac right now then hurrah. I quite like the company and their design is second to none. But if you find sideways comments like that made in the article make you even a little bit annoyed, you should probably just try and smile and relax a bit more in life. Its only a computer, "proper" or otherwise.

On a side note, to the defense of the miffed Mac masses. The degree of platform-centric fanaticism is far worse in the console world. Mac users might compain a little when people mock their machine of choice, but as we have all seen putting XB and PS2 fans in the same discussion ends in hair pulling and tears everytime. Mac users are decidedly Xen filled in comparison.
  • King_of_the_internet #32 7 years ago

Nah, it's a joke. A concept seemingly lost on some people.
  • Talha #33 7 years ago

Come on it was clearly a joke. As for Mac vs PC debate, I have a PC so I like PCs more but I guess they are BOTH EQUALLY GOOD. Mac has this interface and robustness, the PC has flexibility and wide-open standards. Surely they come with their own disadvantages, and ultimately which you get depends on your heart rather than your head. So chill.
